Sounds strange indeed if you know the quartet well. But I find it interesting to see how it works differently. Some passages take the more voluminous sound well, others are not convincing. This is an experiment that will surely not take over. Nobody is going to take the quartet from you. Compare also Bernstein's op 131 for chamber orchestra. Actually, what about the inverse, like Tchaikovsky's Serenade for quartet?

It becomes dull with too many musicians, with just 4 there is more room for expression in my opinion
