Ep. 69 I found this Horrible PAINTED Dresser and RESTORED IT...

- I purchased this painted dresser from Facebook Marketplace for $30. It sat in my shop for months. I just didn't know what I wanted to do with it, other than remove the paint. I considered several different stain colors. I also considered building a new base. In the end, I decided to just remove the paint and apply the most natural finish. The woodgrain patterns are not the most beautiful I have ever seen, but still worthy of showcasing in my opinion. I do not create videos to impress others. I do this because I enjoy it. Sometimes I am able to earn money from ad revenue; other times just from flipping furniture. Every piece has challenges, and I hope you can learn from some of my mistakes before you take on your own projects. Thank you for all your support. Barry

I decided not to narrate this video. It wasn't any easier that way. There just wasn't a story for this piece, and sometimes I enjoy just the sounds of the shop. Thank you for all your support. Barry
Great video as always! Do love all the shop sounds it's a nice change. I miss your voice though!

I always love the stories you tell and the details you share, but this peaceful video was exactly what I needed in the middle of a busy day. Thank you for sharing!
It come to a point when I see a grell painted dresser or some furniture, the chance it's MCM is huge 😜
Just do whatever you feel for regarding no narrating or narrate. Guess it's good to change it up a bit, even though you have a pleasant voice . 😉
All the best from Arctic Norway 👋👋
PS. love that you kept it "original"... think the wood in old(er) dressers are so beautiful, and because it's often slower grown wood the "paintings" are gorgeous, even older pine furniture looks amazing natural.
(sorry for butchering sentences and words, my excuse is English is not my native tongue. 🤪)
Simple, yet beautiful. I miss hearing your voice. A pensive mood is okay too.❤❤❤
Superbly rescued! Thank you,
That chest of drawers came out beautifully! Covering all of that beautiful wood grain with that yellow paint was like putting Mother Nature in a gaudy body bag 😐 I've never went with scraping...I go directly to the "Strypeeze" paint remover 😂 I really like that cabinet you keep your sandpaper in, too.
Fantastic work, as always!
Sorry have not Committed in a while. Been in the process of adapting with health and relocating several times. Now at my 5th location in 6 months, looking for a possible home or perhaps a Motorhome here in Cleveland. Still always watching though, Barry. Always appreciated your work and enjoy sharing. Excellent tedious detailed work as always. Winter months have been a bit tough for all of us. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay creative, my friend. Your work is always well appreciated. Helps get my day started. Thank you for being you.
Barry, you said you don't make videos to impress people.
TOO LATE. I'M MORE THAN IMPRESSED. I'M INSPIRED!
Thank you for turning that ugly duckling into the swan it was born to be.
With great sincerity from,
The Great Lake State of Michigan 🐢
Well done, another beautiful transformation! Love that natural look.
I love how you give these pieces a new life…. I’m always impressed… Thank you
How satisfying is that peel? 😍
Stunning! I love seeing all the different wood grains.
Love the natural look! Well done! God bless you!
What lovely wood under that yukky paint! Another wonderful rescue of an aged piece of furniture!
I love the simple blond finish
Barry, it turned out PERFECT!!!
Great job, I love 💕 it. I’m ready for Spring, buttercups are beginning to bloom here in Middle Tennessee 😊
Great result... and a meditative video!
Es un crimen haber pintado el mueble de amarillo. Resultado perfecto 👌
Saludos desde ANDALUCÍA ESPAÑA 😉
Love the music!!!
OMG! How gorgeous!
Beautiful piece and lovely video. 💚 Thank you!
Great work !
Love it! ❤️
Great video with a beautiful result, but I seem to be in the minority because I actually love the yellow paint LOL!
Barry nice to see you again. That paint peeled off like saran wrap didn't it? It's a nice piece. I can't wait to see what you do with it. 💛
Thanks 👍
After doing some research I've narrowed the wood down to 3: red oak, cherry, or pine?
Damn ! How sad to paint this beautiful wood. The maker clearly chose good quality lumber and once again you pulled out your magic and did an incredible job to restore it back to its beauty....maybe even better🏆 By the rangy grain and your mentioning of the yellow coloring, the wood looks like one of the pine species. It's a long shot by the age of this piece, but was there any smell of turpentine when sanding ?
Ok, don't keep us in suspense! At first I thought Maple, but like you said this wood does not have a lot of graining character to it. So either a very plain Maple or Hickory? Could be pine but there were no knots that I could see... but then I'm no expert, and pine is pretty common to use. So, what was it?🤨
💜
Amazing job. It should be a crime to paint beautiful wood.
I just love the satisfaction of when the paint comes off and you see that gorgeous wood grain underneath! Such a beauty. Great job as always!! :-)
Beautiful work once again! I just want to say thank you for all of your hard work to create these videos for all of us. You do such a great job. I can't imagine how many hours it takes to film and edit and make each one unique. Your videos are a gift.
Super-impressive, fascinating, satisfying, and just beautiful to watch. Great job!
The only thing I miss is you telling us what kind of wood this is cuz I don't know.
But as always, you did a beautiful job .. absolutely beautiful
Looks like cedar to me.
I thought it was pine
That came out looking pretty nice. I might have restored pretty much that same model dresser for a friend. This narrationless vibe is also good. I love the stories but just the sounds of work being done is also good. Cheers.
Oh Barry! What a treat. I really dislike yellow, and really love seeing those giant slabs of paint peeling off, so seeing yellow removed in slab was so satisfying. And such a beautiful result. Well done.
I agree!! Was just thinking this about yellow yesterday-I like some shades of it in certain contexts (like softer, creamier, glowy orange-ish yellow can be nice), but straight, pure yellow just gives me a headache lol.
I love the clean simplicity of this piece. It looks so much better than the bright yellow paint; it is more dignified somehow. It will live a nice long life in its refreshed state.
Love the natural finish. Those handles are beautiful. Glad you used the originals.
This was an amazing transformation! Loved the scraping sounds…very soothing!❤
There is not much you can do with a pine dresser, I have slathered on 4 or 5 coats of pool chlorine (about 8 times more concentrated than household bleach) and that didn't make much difference. Then a whitewash tinted blue helped some, but not tons of difference. It looked somewhat more like driftwood, but not really, I was going for a silver grey. This is probably less orange than it would have been though and they did a good job of avoiding the knots. I am happy you kept it simple. The worst is trying to make pine look like dark walnut or mahogany. Good job, Thanks. BTW, the pulls are the most interesting part, so glad you didn't change them.
A true restoration; beautiful as always
As always a beautiful job Barry.. your videos are so relaxing and inspiring..please continue
I love the birdsong in the background whilst you work, so peaceful almost like a meditation. I hope you repeat it in a future blog.
I liked the music during the video, but I also like when you narrate. I love the stories you tell about the furniture, it's the reason my husband and I love antiques so much. We appreciate you !
Beautiful work as always, Barry. So good to see You back in fine form!
I really like that raw look on this piece . Actually it looks beautiful!! 💖
What a beautiful job. I love watching you. Seeing what is beneath the horrible paint jobs of each piece you start and then wishing I could have it when it is done. Your work is so beautiful and you deserve more subscribers. Come on people out there, get with it and subscribe to this young man's videos. Oh yes, I miss your voice but do love the sounds of all that you do.
At first I thought it was "Oak", then I thought it was "Elm", and then I decided it was "Just Plain Beautiful"!
Nice! I can't believe the bottoms of the drawers were painted as well! Lol. Turned out great Barry! Nice and quiet video is what I needed today. 😊
Actually the grain of the pine looks great. Very swirly and interesting pattern. Love it.
Though I always enjoy your narration, this was a great episode. You are right, the sounds of the process are telling their own story , just as important. The piece was elevated by the restoration, that's a great reveal on its own. I appreciate the work you do, thank you Barry.
You never fail to make something ❤️ . I love your videos and cannot wait to see another. Have a beautiful day!🌹
What a transformation,,,under that ugly yellow paint,,such beautiful solid wood,,, gorgeous
O.M.G !!! I really like yelllow, but, really, HELLO!! What a disaster that was! And now look at it! FANTASTIC ! Who would have thought, that under that Gluck, was a pristine, but plain, piece? Man you are so right for the job you do! Long live Barry! King of the rejuvenators! ❤️🦘
Barry, I love what you did to this dresser. Once again you made it shine. Thanks
Furniture restoration ASMR, brought to us by Barry. It's a shame to see beautiful wood like that covered up with paint, especially canary yellow paint. Nothing against yellow, but that wasn't the most skilled paint job either. Lol.
That dresser was asking for help. Barry to the rescue! Now it's all repaired and and rejuvenated. Simple elegance.
I’ve never seen someone paint the sides and under the drawers like that. Wow. So much more work to remove. Also I saw you go for that screwdriver in the unmarked file drawer and thought I would lose track of where I put stuff and sure enough you opened extra drawers the next time. 😂 How about using that file cabinet to organize the grit and types of sandpaper and get some labels! Or not. I’m sure you have a system. Thanks for sharing. I like the sounds of the work, nature and music choice but am always interested in your stories. Have a great day. 👍🏼
I love it, you just increased the value by 500% !!👍👍👍👍
You could have thinned and tinted your topcoat first coat with a few drops of blue, that would have toned down the orange/yellow, but not completely. First time I have seen the bottoms of the drawers painted, the inside would have made more sense. Thanks again.
Very nice!
The paint peeling reminds me of peeling Elmer's glue off my skin when I was a kid🤣
Looking at this restored dresser, I'd have to say it looks more honest, a bit naked and maybe just plain real. I like this clean look......
Actually today I enjoyed the quiet video. I had so much talking at me today that I hid in my study to get away from it . The dresser turned out beautiful but that is no surprise. Great job as usual!
Nice video Barry! You always do a amazing job. Looks good if not better than new! Still doing that Penny challenge? Hope you're booth space is going well for you. Sure wish I could send some Florida Sunshine up your way .
The shop sounds work well for me and like others have said, I miss your voice which has a soothing timbre
Lovely makeover!! I just did a small 60s teak coffee table fix & flip! Love this side hustle 🙏🏻♥️ Keep it up!!
Looks sooo much better without the horrible yellow paint on it! You did a fantastic job restoring the chest of drawers!
That came out really nice Barry. It seemed like the paint came off fairly easily. That must have been a relief! It was relaxing to watch, and your skills make the task seem so effortless.
I loved the simplicity of the video mirroring the simplicity in the piece. Thanks for another great video :)
I so want spring and summer! I don’t have a shop so I have to do my work outside. I have a cute dresser like that from my grandma. I can’t wait to try and refinish it now! Thank you for not painting these beautiful wood pieces! I love your inspiration but it frustrates me that I can’t work on anything until it warms up. ❤
Basic and charming. Makes me think of Japan.
It’s so beautiful! I’m so glad u restore pieces! I get really so annoyed seeing beautiful wood furniture get chalk painted and rub on transfers smothered to death. They do for views & $, never about what’s right for the furniture pieces!
I totally agree. No respect for beautiful wood pieces. Although sometimes, the repairs made to severe damages can't be camouflaged for a restoration and paint is the only way to go. As long as it's tasteful, I'm OK with it. (Sigh)
Looks all new again! Thank God! It was latex paint!
Wow, that came out so amazing! I have to say that you've spoiled me - after watching your videos YT recommends other channels to me, and a bunch of them would just put a new coat of paint over this old one and not even try to strip it. Needless to say, I don't follow those channels. Your restorations make these pieces that much more beautiful. You do great work, Barry.
very rare to see a dresser completely made of Fir. thanks for saving this little gem
So much prettier with the natural wood grain.
Thanks Barry, I personally LOVE the ASMR. I was going to guess white oak until it was fully sanded. LOL But final guess is pine? You have to tell us!
Paint on the bottom and sides of the drawer???? Beautiful work, Barry. BTW, I LOVE your sanding pad storage!!!!
Hi Barry, absolutely stunning. It’s beautiful. Well done Sir. Joyce ❤️🙏🇺🇸
Voice-over, don't voice-over, speak to us in between shots, don't speak to us in between shots, add music, don't add music heck even sing or don't sing, even whistle for God's sake just keep making videos Bud!!! LOL!! The REAL ones will be here every time. Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Ugh! I have to agree that scraping this much sucks!!! So, bringing on the stripper is best!!! You're going to still have work anyway on the details. Not an AMSR person, but this reminds me of working with my Dad on different projects, so thank you!!! ☺️ I'd tell you to go on with your bad self, but actually I think you do a good self spectacularly!!! Thank you!!!
Inquiring mind wants to know-what species of wood was that? A Beautiful, Natural piece!!!💓💫💓 while watching the very beginning with you still having snow-the stripper and putty scrapper looked like a snow plow!!! Just me. LOL!! Loving all the diff cuts to make the most of the wood grain💫🌸💫
I don’t mind the “no talking”. In fact, I appreciate te productive sounds.
Your work is thoughtful, deliberate and beautiful. Thank you.
That looks beautiful! Although I do miss the narration… a piece doesn’t always have to have a story…LOL! Just teasing! You do such great work!! Take care!
Hi Barry, you did it again, what a great outcome from the canary yellow dresser you started with... I love watching you strip paint, so satisfying ...Take care....
Another great job/video. I love how the paint peeled and scraped off, very satisfying. Glad you are back making videos.
Ooo la la! Stripped down to bare skin and looking beautiful! Lol. I'm being silly.😉 I'm always amazed by how you know the exact right things to do to bring out the best in a piece of furniture. Well done.
Simple white pine 4-drawer dresser. Many were made for the un-finished furniture stores. Buy it and finish it yourself. That could be why someone painted it yellow. My sister liked flat black. Go figure. Thanks for the video. Jon
The simplicity of this piece and video is great!
I just finished re-finishing my small kitchen table top. I sanded it after stripping the old stain. I then chose Polyshades Classic Black because that’s what the box store had. Did three coats for opaque solid finish, then 3 poly coats, sanding between. Used restore a finish on base, legs and two chairs. Then feed n wax. It was a great project and amazed my hubby I think.
You inspire me and I always think of your channel when I see a can of GF Candlelight….lol!
What a gorgeous dresser this turned out to be. Someone really tried to hide the beauty of the wood by painting it. When you stripped it I didn't find any real damage as to why they painted it maybe in a baby's room don't know. It is beautiful now and you have done a very terrific job on it. Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful day
I like the simple, clean finish you gave it. Goodbye, ugly yellow paint! Hello, Barry Special!
LOVED the quiet video this time! And everything about what you did was spot on. Love the blonde/bleach look!
Purist that you are, beautiful 👍🏽
Who paints the sides of drawers? I'm surprised that person didn't paint the inside of the drawers. They even painted the back! So much paint. What a paint removal job! I'll bet it was so satisfying working on and saving a solid wood piece. Love the original handles. Unique. I also love the strong grain of the wood. What wood is it? Birch?
Aw Barry, lovin' your new style!! 🥰
Even though missing your dulcet tones!
Wow, what a difference!
Your dulcet voice was definitely missing tho Barry! 😊
What a change from the ugly yellow. So nice and Simple at the end. Really nice. Love the little cupboard (don't know the proper english name) where you store the sandpaper.
Hey Barry. That bureau looks great. Nice and simple and clean. I did miss hearing you narrate though! It’s okay. Next time. Until the next video, take care!
I really appriciate how you bring back lovely old things, particularlly when they have been painted, the tranformaions make my day.
A great job on the repairs and finish. Consider a change of backdrop for the finished product viewing. It may kick up your work and details you put into it. Narragansett Bay.
1000% better than that yellow junk. Why would anyone paint over real wood is beyond me. You did the best thing for that dresser...
Great job! Years ago I took 7 layers of different colored paint off a round pedestal table. After lots of gel stripper, sanding and reconditioning the wood, it turned out beautiful! You have inspired me to once again salvage what someone else has damaged and bring it back to life....Thanks. I forgot how much fun working on that table was.
