I actually own a tiny pea sized fragment of this asteroid. Probably the most valuable rock in my collection. The shockwave and subsequent “bolide thunder” is absolutely astounding. I can only imagine how intense Tunguska would have been to witness considering it was almost five times bigger. Crazy event. Poor folks at Chelyabinsk probably thought this was a nuke considering how bright and loud it was.

Then how did it get in lol. The only thing stopping the meteors from hitting earth is the immense heat from the gravity when they enter the atmosphere.
+E. I would imagine that some of them were just in shock. We only get a meteor strike like that once every couple of hundred years. Some people freak, others just stand and stare. Depends on the person.
This asteroid entered the atmosphere at approximately 60 times the speed of sound, or 42,000 MPH. It's energy release was 30 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. It's size was approximately 20 meters in diameter upon entry. It exploded 97,000 feet above earth which likely saved the Chelyabinsk region from catastrophic damaged had it stayed intact. It's shockwave took over a day to disperse and traveled around the earth twice. In comparison, the asteroid that caused the extinction of dinosaurs is estimated to be 6-10 miles in diameter. This caused significant depletion of the ozone layer, and upon impact sent ejecta from earth into space. This cause the earth to be engulfed in flames. The debris thrown into the atmosphere blocked out the sun for years causing much of the life to die. Luckily, small mammals were able to survive, which led to mammalian dominance. If the dinosaurs didn't go extinct, we would not be here.
@@AWretchedMan "it's been 65 million years so it's gonna happen this century" makes no logical sense lol, more like "it's been 65 million years since the last one so the odds of an extinction level impact happening in any given century is extremely low"
@Salvadore Orozco Otherwise definitely in this Century there will be an impact by a celestial body or all out nuclear war for sure. The Earth won't be habitable in 100 years, and we'll destroy ourselves before then. Venus was once like Earth. Now it's like an acid planet. Earth will be like that in the coming centuries. I also think this Century we will find out the answer to one of life's biggest questions.... Are we alone??.... we've advanced rapidly in 100 years. Imagine in another 100 years.... If all of Humanity come together as one race and don't destroy ourselves or the planet.
Embarassing and superficial as lots of these comments.. They don't react because they're just surprised, as everyone would have been. That was a very quick event, you can't realize immediately what's happening.
This is a good video because it is a compilation of many videos, mostly surveillance and dashcam videos, showing the explosions from different perspectives. It also shows the damage and injuries. At a time when most people have been either complacent or dismissive of the danger of a meteor strike, this video confirms that the danger is real and demonstrates that our space agencies need to continue putting money and work into finding ways to protect us all.
It was silent. For about 90 seconds, till the shockwave hit. I think it has something to do with the speed of light being faster than the speed of sound.
I was doing some Astrophotography one night in Tasmania (Australia) only recently and 3 meteorites streaked across the sky. All of them burned up though. They didn't all come at once, there was at least an hour difference between them.
the initial blast blew the meteor into pieces. Each of those pops is several sonic booms from each separate chunk of the meteor. You can hear a similar double or triple sonic boom when a Falcon 9 booster returns to the pad.
The Chelyabinsk meteor was estimated to have caused over $30 million in damage. It is the largest recorded object to have encountered the Earth since the 1908 Tunguska event. The meteor is estimated to have an initial diameter of 17-20 metres and a mass of roughly 10,000 tonnes.

Well, at the risk of sounding like a dipshit with a stick up his ass, I will point out that meteors only exist once they hit the Earth's atmosphere since they are technically termed "asteroids" or something similar while in space and meteorites once they have hit the ground, so the joke really works for any country or, indeed, any planetary body in general. Poor folks at Chelyabinsk probably thought this was a nuke considering how bright and loud it was.
afaik most people thought it was a burning fighter jet falling, since fighter jets were flying semi-frequently in the skies above

+E. I would imagine that some of them were just in shock. We only get a meteor strike like that once every couple of hundred years. Some people freak, others just stand and stare. Depends on the person.

+Gareth Jason ssmm
It's only a matter of time til we have another extinction level event... it's been 65 million years... it's gonna happen this Century.
@@AWretchedMan "it's been 65 million years so it's gonna happen this century" makes no logical sense lol, more like "it's been 65 million years since the last one so the odds of an extinction level impact happening in any given century is extremely low"
@Salvadore Orozco Yeah the Toba or Yellowstone super volcanoes will probably erupt soon
