- During opening weekend I visited the Asia Society Museum in NYC to see for myself the wonderful gold artifacts from the Philippines that depict our rich heritage and precolonial history prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. In old Spanish texts from Francisco Alcina, the most well known chronicler of the Bisayans to Antonio Pigafetta, the scholar who joined Ferdinand Magellan when they first landed in our shores, the mention of gold was very much prevalent throughout the islands. Our ancestors, from the slaves to the nobility, wore gold, most being passed down from generation to generation as bahandi, or heirlooms. From gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, armlets, to even sashes, belts, and the hilts of their daggers were made of gold. Their religious objects from bowls to figures of deities were also intricately designed and made of gold. They would often bury these gold objects so the dead person can wear them in the afterlife. It was also a form of acceptance in the afterlife as among the Bisayans according to Francisco Alcina in his 1668 records, the god of happiness and of Saad, the resting place of the souls, once upon receiving the soul from the primordial sea goddess Magwayen on a bangka, he would ask them a question. Surrounded by the ancestors he would ask if they were that certain person who died. However if the soul did not have with them any gold or bahandi, they would not recognize them. From records we know that the Spaniards often ransacked known burial sites for the purpose of taking these gold buried with the dead.
To see the gold artifacts yourselves I invite anyone who can come to NYC and the Asia Society Museum to come and take a step back in time. The exhibit runs from September 11 2015 - January 3, 2016 and is located at:

I read the gold was seized in 1668 but does anyone know when and how long they were making this style. That woven gold was stunning. Beautiful work. It reminds me of the Thracian gold they found by the Black Sea.
The earliest mention of the Kingdom of Tondo was in the 9th century from the (Laguna Copper plate) but it could be older since the inscription only mentions the date the document was made which was kind of like a reciept for a lord who had debt to the king.

Part of the culture of the ancient inhabitants of the island was to pass down all their belongings, including gold and garments through generations. The only reliable way to trace back the ages of these jewelries was to date the containers they were in, (Gold is pretty hard to date accurately at the moment.)
It is likely they were able to make these pieces centuries before the Spanish arrived; as many other countries recorded the Philippines for it. Interestingly, the Ancient Greeks knew of the islands' existence and labelled one the 'Isle of Chryse,' (Island of Gold.) It is hinted to be present day Mindoro, by a famous cartographer called Ptolemy.

Well I don't really understand that. He told me that it was just said by his great great grandfather to his grand father. I think that it was just a fairytale story, but still I will tell that kind of story to one of my future kid. There's nothing to lose by telling that story , and besides it was really kind of a family tradition to tell that to my future kids because my grandfather really asked me to do that. Wow his story sounds very similar to Genesis where the Garden of Eden was mentioned where the first man and women rose, also where the first sin was committed causing the divine land of God to be diminished where no man can no longer traverse.
