  • This consumer grade lens has failed TWICE. Due to a poor engineering design, a stopper tends to unscrew itself if you use the switch that stops you from zooming unintentionally too often. which results in the zoom barrel get stuck.
I decided to glue it up once and for all. This lens is a pain in the arse to assemble with. In fact I repeated more steps in the video in order to get it right.
Also celebrating the upload of my first attempt HD video :)

Hi BlokeFromBattersea, when I first took it apart I didn't know how did the mechanism looked like, more like out of curiosity. To answer your question more specifically, the zoom mechanism is usually one entire cam shaft, the good practice is always leave markings and notes on the positions and angles before you take apart the confusing elements. I have no idea how the Tamron 18-200 looks like but, good luck if you're going to attempt fixing it!

Dear Jack, I still have this lens and I am still using it. I made this video just to point out a potential flow in the design and how to go about fixing it in case any service shop tried to bullshit you. It's still a pretty sharp lens, I suppose the newer batch of lens should glue the screws to prevent it from coming out.

    Hi
very interesting video, and nice and clear too. I have a Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Pentax fit. The zoom ring is slightly loose and has backlash. This appears to be getting worse. It feels as though there are loose screws, which might eventually fall off an jam the lens. When you were doing this repair did you observe how the zoom ring is attached to the zoom mechanism.?

hi yesimshaking, level of difficulty is really subjective. My advice for beginners is, you may try one step at a time, take out the mount, take out some screws if it's comfortable with you, just make sure you can assemble back at any point of time. Anytime you feel uncomfortable, just put it back. All the best.
For this repair in particular, I had uploaded the 100% speed version. Do take a look if it can help you.

Hi Tony, great sound and video!
Can you give me any help with a tamrom quantaray 28-200 also stucked?
It has some internal rings that dials the external aperture ring and I'm having great issues to put it together when I try to reassembly the lens...

    Tony,
I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8 that has a similar issue. It appears in your video the zoom ring turns freely, mine will zoom out a small amount and will be STUCK. have to apply some pressure to get it back. Do you think this is a similar issue? How difficult is the repair for someone who has never repaired a lens before? May just take it in, but wanted to check my options.

Me and my friend both lost our Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8 non-VC lenses to this zoom ring problem.

Hi... I am looking for a Nikon Full Frame len and was looking on this Tarmon 28-300mm Vi len and came across your video. I am wondering if you would recommend this len to anyone, since you have this problem. Also, how long do you have this len for and how often does it get stuck?
    Thank you, Jack

im on the same boat now with assembling the tamron 28-75. Im stuck somewhere. I just replaced the aperture flex cable, now im 85% complete but I can't get this thing closed up. I was hoping I would see some similarities on your lens. A slower speed would help.

you can change playback speed in your options for the video. .5, and .25 are for slowing video down.

Hey there, do you know "photo SFX art" (just search on Google for it ...)? On their website you can watch a useful free video featuring the way to shoot fantastic pictures. It made it easier for Daniel to shoot photos which leave you with that jaw-dropping-effect when you look at them. Hopefully it will work for you as well.
