There isn’t many content creators who are genuine anymore. RUclips is a weird corporate space now, there are still a few good ones and this guy right here is one of them. Always staying connected with the audience and really more so the community. Comfortable videos that feel like your having a lunch convo with a friend. I’ve without a doubt watched most of my anime from this channel and that’s why this will always be my favorite channel and my place to turn to when I feel down. If for some reason bobsamurai you read this, I wanna say thanks for all the years of vids, especially the recent ones, you’ve been killing it lately just doing what you like, and I hope you keep making videos for a while. 🙏

RUclips is a weird corporate space, those with the market mentallity make their channels bigger and bigger, and those who doesnt well, just stay small because not even the algorithm promotes them. Is kind of a sad truth, to be more watchable you have to play with the market rules and forget about integrity, is all about sells, all about how many views can you generate in the shortest amount of time, is about Metrics. Basically a whole another game.

I have always thought that Death Note and Monster are somehow the default for introducing somebody into anime. DN has that perfect amount of wacky things that is iconic in the anime community while not being so out of the place for new people that aren't familiar with the anime tropes/memes, and Monster is just so devoid of almost everything that is considered anime-esque and if it had an English language tv show nobody would even assume that it has any connection with those "silly Chinese cartoons".

It's been a good handful of years since I've been really into anime, but I came across you again recently and was instantly reminded why I used to you watch you so much back in the day. Good and passionate with a lot of knowledge, you introduced me to some series that really related to me at the time.
I'm considering getting back into anime a bit more again, it's been too long and there are many that I wanted to watch but never did.

To be honest someone recommended Seven Deadly Sins, Jujitsu Kaisen and I couldn't get into them. For first time anime watchers I'd say don't recommended a series with over 80 episodes at first. hayao miyazaki films, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, the boy and the beast are a series of animated films I'd recommend.

Not all of them stuck, of course, but I'm glad he also now loves Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Mob Psycho 100, Konosuba, Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun, among others.

I remember introducing someone to anime with Kuroko no Basket because he liked basketball but he didn't like it. My brother recommended Haikyuu, was before I saw it, and thought why would he watch an anime about a sport he doesn't like. Turns out he got into Haikyuu because was more realistic.

I have an uncle who is a huge fan of Bladerunner and I tried recommending him Ghost in the Shell (1995). The only thing he recognizes in the anime medium is Speed Racer (Go Go Mach 5) and thinks GitS is probably for kids (he's a baby boomer). GitS 95 isn't just a great anime movie; it's a great science fiction movie. It's just a shame that some people write off the anime medium because of their narrow perception of it in conjunction with the bad repute of some unsavory individuals in the anime community.

Part of the reason why people would recommend something like Attack on Titan was that, if the person would could get into it, they'd instantly become part of an ongoing discussion among all the other people currently watching it and it would give them a show in common with most other anime fans they'd meet. It depends if the person who comes to you looking to get into anime is looking for a unique piece of media that speaks to them or if they're basically already sold on the aesthetic and the medium and they're really looking for an easy entry point into the subculture (which a well-made, but highly popular ongoing show would provide). Attack on Titan should probably be switched out for something like Chainsaw Man now since it's ending soon.

A long time ago, i watch a video of a Latin American RUclipsr called yururin, autoproclamaid an "ultra weeb" talk about a similar topic(His thoughts on a worthwhile critique), because in this side of the world (latin america) some anime fans are ultra toxic and selective about anime/manga quality, but in 2015 it was even worse, basically, they watch a video of a youtuber about "X" anime no matter that his opinion was wrong they adopt his thought and humiliates to anyone who thinks otherwise.

Separate comment but yeah, I got a story that kind of scars me in a way, one of my best friends Ryan started getting into anime and he watched some sports anime and also loved stuff like Death note because he was a massive basketball fan and he liked more real thrillers, especially of the phycological variety and he liked mature romantic anime. Well finally I recommended him Lucky star! 🤣 haven’t not even seen it myself and was just going with the flow with what all the fans were raving about at the time. You remember the lucky star memes? That was it! Lol. That forever sealed his fate for ever watching anything ever again. He truly hated and detested some of the things that were in that series and to this day, has always been somewhat apprehensive about watching anime. Again I was dumb back then, I did not judge things my self and instead just believed what everyone was saying at the time. Finally in 2020, he started watching attack on titan and some other things, eventually he gravitated back towards the hobby around the pandemic time frame, but man did it take many many many years.

Pretty interesting video. I like the way you explain how and why you should take care in recommending anime to people who are new to the medium. Especially the example of how Legend of the Galactic Heroes could be perfect for someone's first anime but may be considered by some a bad rec because it's not well known in some circles, as well as complicated, despite there being no reason to assume someone new to anime would consider either of these things a negative.

Has been so many years since i watched a video of yours, but just a couple of days i dont know why it came to my mind "bob samurai" and your channel asking me what was about you and if you were still uploading videos, seeing this bring me back memories where i used to watch a really good amount of them. I know that none cares but i grew up with anime way before started to became stream (which for most part is not bad) on tv with series like digimon, beyblade, medabots and some more mature like gantz, hellsing , vandread, on channels like animax ( the time where still existed in my country) and didnt knew that was called anime actually if someone would ask me at that time, i loved and still do keep watching it and one of the most amaizing things its that i still enjoy the same as when i was a kid that itself its crazy, love anime of 90`s early 2000 to me those are pure nostalgic of course even today are many good series but the drawings, palette of color , the overall direction its hold his own charm movie, ovas ,specials, series of that age.
I do have no one with who to talk about anime sadly has been like that all my life (which its fine) but i watche your videos because one of the reason was that i like to hear opinions , views and their own feeling towards the series, i respect the taste of everyone though maybe there may be time were i do not agree or dont like certain types of generes i always apprecite and (at least in my case) we are all here gather for the passion that we have towards this medium.
I hope i can see more of your videos bob, thanks so mcuh for the videos i never actually commented (i think) but i wanted to let you know.

I've a friend who doesn't watch Anime, but he does like animation. He's very conservative when it comes to the technology, prefers Cel, so I narrowed that down to Movies I have from the 80s, 90s and early 00s, he's not into violence, so I didn't bother with titles like Ninja Scrolls and the like and he's not into cyberpunk so that put GITS off. I also avoided anything too weird.
I ended up lending him Wings of Honneamise as it was more grounded sci-fi and was a good example of high quality animation as well as Memories for the same reason as well as the distinctive art style from Canon Fodder and Princess Arete, as he does like old Disney Films and the artwork had a 50s Disney look crossed with a World Masterpiece Anime look.

Honestly when it comes to reccomending someone a game, I am not sure how I would do it. There's too many factors to consider. But when it comes to reccomending anime, that is much easier by comparison but it ultimately feels like a farce to me since 90% of the time no one ever listens to my reccomendations and just look up the highest thumbed up ones. I am not even so sure why you kept using fighting shonen anime like DBZ or Naruto as example people would use to get into anime, those shows get mocked all the way to hell and back. Whenever I do see people reccomend anime, it's usually overpraised shit that I find questionable to even reccomend someone who is not into anime like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Evangelion and Code Geass, the last show I question why anyone would ever reccomend to a non viewer, DBZ would fare better than CG if you ask me.
But I do ultimately agree that people should mention their taste in media first before reccomending anime, which is why when people on Twitter ask, "what anime should I watch", I am like, "can you be more specific?" I could tell them to watch something like Perfect Blue or Berserk 97 but would they even enjoy those kinds of stories. I remember one Twitter mutual telling me about this one dude who absolutely loathed Attack on Titan and Death Note and he didn't like anime.
My brother for example doesn't even want to watch fighting shonen that isn't called Dragon Ball since he felt every story that is like Dragon Ball isn't half as good as it, so I told him to watch Berserk 97 and Full Metal Alchemist 2003 and enjoyed those.
This whole thing is so hazey, you got anime fans who rarely watch different shows and reccomend generic shit and then you got anime fans who do watch a wider array of stuff but they won't get the thumbs and will get ignored because they aren't telling them to watch generic shit. The anime community is a farce and its better when you watch anime than talking about them.

Anime and social media are a cancerous combo. I never liked anime that other people were into. I only got into anime by accident. I found an obscure show in high school that was fansub only and nobody I knew had ever seen. I happened to quite like it, and started my journey from there. I never would have gotten into anime via Dragon Ball, One Piece, AoT or really any of those big shounen series. They’re just not for me. There are so many genres in anime. Even more than in western tv or cinema. There’s really something for almost everybody.

  • @FoamBot

I think part of the problem with things like this, and it even includes the primary example of video games, is that we talk about anime and video games as all inclusive categories
If somebody said they enjoy watching TV, we might look at them and think that they were being intentionally vague because its unlikely they just enjoy every tv show ever and that the prefer to watch specific shows like law and order or you watch certain channels like ESPN
or if somebody said they like watching movies our first question might be ‘oh which movies’
we need to be more direct in giving recommendations for anime and video games based around the things that people already like
if they like sports than a sports, anime, or a sports video game
If they like fantasy such as Tolkien then maybe an action/RPG or maybe a fantasy based Isekai
as someone who both watches certain animes, and plays certain video games, I think it’s important to share the things that we enjoy, but also consider how oversaturated the internet is with those things at any given time and how that might affect someone’s perceptions

Broaden your taste is always, always, ALWAYS a positive. And guess what? You're able to give much better recommendations after you open yourself up for more experiences!
I'm pretty confident I can get a good few across to strangers of anime, but I'm more concerned about recommending shows to people who're already acquainted to anime. They often block something out completely without giving it a try, or they can't see something on it's own term. I suppose it is best to save energy from stubbornness like this and let them take their time to initiate themselves. All we can do before that is to plant a seed in them hueheuhue. But seriously though I wish people engage with art more than just kill-time entertainment. Something not for you doesn't mean there's nothing to take away at all.

I've found success in showing my girlfriend specific anime that I can cater to her interests, which in turn broadens her horizons. And she used to claim to HATE anime. She'll never be a die hard, but I've shown her enough anime now to the point she admits she likes it, which is a win for me.
But the anime I show her are different to my specific friends, family, etc. There's enough variety of anime out there that there really is an anime for everyone. If you're familiar enough, you're bound to find SOMETHING for someone.

What I've come to realise is that no matter who recommends what anime or even not recommend an anime because it is considered bad, my motto is to always watch said anime for myself before making any solid judgement.
That's because while my opinions on anime tend to align with the general consensus, it doesn't always happen. Sometimes, there can be a show that's been trashed to shit that I actually found myself really liking aka Akame Ga Kill. And other times, there are just shows which I can't bring myself to like no matter how much it has been praised, in this case Beelzebub I guess.
So no matter what preconceived thoughts I have going into a new anime, I always give it a fair go first. 😁

  • @zlodrim9284
    @zlodrim9284 Год назад +1

I agree wholeheartedly about your point about most anime recommendations suffering from the "made for babies" problem, I once had a disagreement regarding the topic when I said more people should recommend Monster as a go to entry into the medium, as opposed to the most popular shounen titles, let's say. The person I had a conversation said it would be too boring and would turn those people away from the medium, not accounting for their taste and preferences and what they usually are into and value when it comes to art and their preferred medium of choice. And that's something anime fans as a whole have problem grasping from my experience, not everyone is the same when it comes to that and you can't recommend Code Geass and Death Note to people who have Twin Peaks and The Wire on their list of favorites, or are used to reading Melville, Faulkner and McCarthy. It's no wonder anime as a medium has terrible optics to outsiders since its fans are mostly tasteless and promote the most common denominator of a show, rather than highlighting a title that is truly special and showcases the strength of the medium they claim to love, but have made poor attempt at studying and learning about, resulting in their surface-level tastes and non-existent knowledge of the medium, its greats and landmark titles that changed it and have endured the test of time.

When I’m asked to recommend an anime for a novice viewer I tell them that I have a prerequisite they must follow before I recommend anything. They have to write a list of tv shows and movies that they both like and hate as well as why. I also have them write down genres they love, are impartial to, and will not watch. I then go from there.
Edit: if a series has a movie that doesn’t require to watch the series first I’ll go thar route as well. If it’s a short series (12 ep or less) or an OAV series then that gets thrown in to the mix.

Most people already have negative connections to anime. To a grandma I would recommend Miss Hokusai, To All the Corners of the World, or Grave of the Fireflies, but at the end of the day, if I absolutely had to recommend something to someone I know absolutely nothing about, my answer would be Dragon Ball Z or Death Note, because it just has the biggest probability hit rate.

Nowadays I don't really care, I just enjoy what I enjoy for myself mostly. I guess it's hard to give good recommendations for people who focus entirely on one or two genres. Totally agree that it's fun to explore new and different stuff.

I have two brothers who are very picky about their anime and it's very frustrating trying to recommend anything to them. Even when I think I've found something that should fit their taste, the shows keep missing the mark for reasons that aren't clear to me.
I'm like: "What do you mean, you don't like this thing? It's practically the same as that other thing you like! Yes, I know you like Attack on Titan, everyone does for some reason, but that's too specific to be helpful!"

all i watch mainly is 90s 00s very obscure anime nobody would really know other then hardcore people. the art style imo is just so much better. not saying new stuff is bad it's just like so many animes are people pumped out with mediocre animation and art styles. You also have the find out what genre they like, people think anime is just all same (like a Marvel film), when there's probably 20+ genres. the first non mainstream(maybe back in the day it was) anime I watched was Tenchi muyo GXP.

Anime is just another art form, like books, movie, TV, video games, etc. If I ever recommend an anime to someone who doesn't have much experience of it I just recommend a show based on their tastes, and it's worked out pretty well so far. I have a friend who's only watched Kaiji and he thought it was amazing.

Something that bugs me is when others insist that you should like what they like; it’s as if they don’t understand the very concept of opinions. Fortunately, I don’t get that vibe from you.

    Recommend them something you like!
Me: LOGH (stuck on an obscure streaming service), Monster (can't watch legally), Ashita no Joe (can't watch legally), Berserk 1997 (Can't watch legally.)
I'd have to give them a pirate hat if I want to recommend my favorites.

I always recommend based on what someone likes to a T. I had a friend who never watched anime before and their idea of anime was Naruto and Hentai. Judging by the fact they liked themes of sci fi and dark serious topics. Recommended Serial Experiments Lain, nowadays they are on to watching all kinds of different anime and turned their views away and understanding that it's more than annoying ninja kid, screaming, or boobies. (Also have a thing where I try to steer clear from recommending mainstream things)

First thing I do when people ask me for recommendations is ask what genres and types of shows they already enjoy, and/or what they're currently in the mood for.
I also try recommending shows that are already complete, so nothing on-going (because for all we know, the quality will take a nosedive later on), and none of those incomplete shows with "go read the manga" cliffhanger endings. In my eyes, those shows have failed both as adaptation and as shows by their own merits.
And of course, movies and OVA's are easy enough to recommend, and that's excluding the obvious Studio Ghibli catalogue. There are tons of movies out there with differing niches.

If you feel that nothing you say matters on the internet then that's even more reason to do it lol. Upload whatever the hell you want, it's definitely alot better than leaving the channel bone dry.
