I know this is old but I'd just like to say this is hugely helpful - my daughter wants to learn banjo and I was hoping to use Murphy Method, but she's only 8 and a full size would be too big for her. If I get her a travel banjo but tune it to C she won't be able to learn along with the resources in G. So this is a great option - and - quieter is fine for a practicing child!
Sounds great--thanks for posting this. What gauges did you end up using? I see Aquila has a "minstrel" string set designed for lower tunings on standard scale instruments. Gauges for these are .0275, .0325, .0390, .0280w, and .0275. I'm wondering how those would work as a prefab set.
Chris Jackson I used .0244 .033w .028w .0291 and .0260. I haven't used Aquila in a long time so I am not sure how they would compare. This is GHS wound classical guitar strings and fluorocarbon
I really like the looks of your mini banjo. I wonder if you've ever thought of going with a traditional banjo shaped headstock? Since you use the straight tuners rather than having the tuning keys sticking out the sides, a trad shaped head would look so old timey with that pretty wooden pot.
Hello Aaron,
Great, informative video. I'm loving the sound of open g tuning on this mini 5 string.
I like the sound.

Hello John- I’m curious which headstock you think of as traditional.
This banjo is also called a tranjo (travel banjo).
How much is this little guy?
about 1800, but I'm not with beansprout, so check for sure.
