You might’ve thought that sisterhood rant was silly but people needed to hear it. After listening to this my little sister called my mom from school and said she was having a panic attack and begged to be picked up. So we both left work and now we’re having a movie day in her bed. Made me realize life is so short. And being an empathetic woman is beautiful and I’m grateful for the opportunity. I love your podcast, B 😭💕

Nobody thinks you're "unsafe"; and those that do aren't the kind of people you should listen to anyway. You'll live a lonely life without people to relate to.
Bachelor in Museum Studies here! The tiny portraits Brittany talks about are called cameos. They were made for all income levels with the less expensive ones being made of only one layer of carving (cheaper ones would be clay while more expensive ones might be a variety of materials layered on top of one another). The more expensive/high-class options generally had anywhere from 2-4 layers of carving which could be alabaster stone, mother of pearl, etc. those multilayered ones where often carved so that the viewer could see each material layer as a part of an entire image if that makes sense. Very cool little pieces and they can be remarkably complex images!
That thing Brittany said about friends who will blatantly text and drive GIRLLLL DON'T GET ME STARTED IT'S SO TERRIFYING 😭 I've got a "friend" I don't hang out with anymore, but for a while I was at the point where I'd always offer to drive because I could NOT stand to risk being the passenger in their car!! What's worse is I LITERALLY OFFER to handle their phone FOR them so they can keep their eyes on the road, but they say "nah it's okay!" and THEN CHECK IT ANYWAYS!!! The amount of times they'd go from 60 to 90 back to 60, toeing the line, FAST STOPS instead of gradual ones all because their PHONE was more important than the road??????? Oh my GOD it was awful. One time I was so scared they were going to rear-end someone at a stop light (they were on their phone again) that I accidentally blurted out "stop stOP" and I NEVERRR freak out like that (usually I'm silent if anything goes wrong lol). They didn't hit the car but they were like "oh sorry". WTF DO U MEAN "OH SORRY"??? GET OFF YOUR PHONE 😭 I'm at the point in life now that I'll just take the driver's phone form their hands if they're not stopped. Maybe their life isn't important to them, but MY life is important TO ME and I WILL ensure that I get home safely. STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING MFS!
as someone who was rear ended at a stop light by someone who wasn't paying attention (b/c they were probably on their phone), had my car subsequently totaled, forced to buy another car when I'm already so poor making minimum wage and skimping on food to make sure I make rent, THANK YOU THANK YOU for holding your drivers accountable. one small mistake can literally ruin an innocent person's life. FUCK people who use their phone and drive. on a side note, to anyone reading this, if you don't have uninsured motorist coverage, here is your sign to get it. also FUCK people who drive without auto insurance.
it drives me nuts when people do that. i make a real effort to never look at my phone when i drive, and seeing people genuinely going 80 miles an hour on the interstate while actively texting is so fucking terrifying to me. i simply can't conceptualize how people think that's really ok, like i don't do that shit alone in my car and i don't even value my own life that much LMAOOOOO
Ugh obsessed. I love that Brittany is a committed lifelong learner. Nothing better than being able to hear these complex analyses she somehow can put forth in a one woman show. Appreciate!!!!!!
my boyfriend has walked in on so many britany moments where she’s objectifying the shit out of a man or talking about dick and i’m like NO PLEASE IF YOU WOULD LISTEN TO 2 MORE MINUTES SHE GETS INTO SOME SERIOUS TALK 😭
14:06 “life is to be enjoyed, and it is so much sweeter and richer when you are holding the hand of your sister.” i am an only child. i have not read this book. i am crying real mf tears. i have friends who are like sisters to me. our love for each other has saved my life
There is nothing like crying with another woman who you have truly no relation to, who doesn’t know you exist, over the love and respect you have towards other women. I feel sisterhood in this Chili’s tonight.
I try to practice not getting on my phone even when it’s socially acceptable in public, like sitting in a waiting room or standing in line. I just sit there and look around, look at people, name all the different sounds I can hear. It’s immersion in daily life and it actually helps me be appreciative and loving toward my surroundings rather than cultivating escapism. Then in situations with family and friends, I don’t even have the urge to check my phone. It helps to not have many (or any) social media apps. Your part on sisterhood hit me because I struggle to maintain relationships with women for some reason. I’ve had lapses in trust with women I think, but I’m trying to get over that. I feel like we would be great friends, B, I appreciate your connectivity to life’s little things ❤️
I can’t stress enough how much I thoroughly admire your segment on the phone issue with our generations. It’s something that is arguably the most overlooked thing because it’s become so normal to allow these little boxes to take so much of our attention away from the beautiful things in life (I am 110% guilty of it too). And as you moved into talking about the issue with people texting and driving-yeah, I feel you there. There are just so many people who obviously do not understand or try to understand the value and preciousness of life, and how quickly something bad could happen. Sorry to be so depressing on a Friday evening, but I’m so thankful I was raised to pay attention to these things. I wish more people would, because man, it seems like the more time goes on, the less people understand how to interact with each other and get off of their phones. It’s one reason I made myself delete TikTok. I got so addicted to where I couldn’t go to the restroom at home or get ready for bed without getting on and scrolling. Just wanted to emphasize how much I agreed with your segment on this!
TYSM for talking about how rude it is when people are on their phones when you're trying to have a conversation! Sometimes I feel like I'm so out of place because I get irritated by that and no one else seems to care at all, literally all my friends scroll on their phones when I try and talk to them. It's super depressing.
i think this is a good lesson in not forcing ppl to listen to you, especially when they’re very clearly showing you & communicating that they’re not capable or interested in conversation with you right now. so many ppl are convinced that they’re entitled to others time & energy that they end up like this, making themselves a perpetual victim who’s just so outcast & misunderstood.
@@pixie9499 I don't think having a normal conversation with someone is 'forcing them to listen to me'. I'm also not 'entitled to anyone's time', and not sure why you would assume either of those things based on my comment. It's just straight up rude to be on your phone the entire time someone is trying to have a genuine conversation or spend time together.
no seriously, i started identifying as genderfluid bc the woman identity was too overwhelming for me but every time brittany gets literal stars in her eyes talking about womanhood i'm like hey dats me too :'''')
my ex used to literally be on his phone 24/7, especially every time we went out to eat. I remember we went to the aquarium for our first anniversary and while I was mesmerized by watching the sea lions, I turn around and he was sitting on a bench playing clash of clans LOL. then when I started reading heavily again last year, he would get so angry that I wasn’t giving him attention. went so far as to even tell me I couldn’t bring my books to his house! but then he’d turn around and be on the playstation for hours.. when we broke up he actually had the audacity to tell me my reading was a big turn off/ problem for him LMFAOOO safe to say I dodged a bullet!
I’m so glad you loved silver flames. It’s such an amazing book. It was sometimes hard to read because I went through Nestas journey. I’m still going through her journey. And even after you do all the hard work it’s so hard to swallow that other people might never give you that chance and you just have to accept it. ❤❤

what an amazing synopsis of silver flames. it actually ended up being my favorite book of the series and i resonated so much with nesta. i think people that don’t like nesta is because they know a nesta and do not understand or just can’t understand how your mind turns on you and makes you feel that you need to protect yourself from everything. and by doing that and having so many walls up you are an impenetrable force but you push everyone around you away and soon enough you find out that THAT is the easy way out. being vulnerable and facing those emotions head on is the hard part and i just am so absolutely obsessed with nestas story and she also ended up being my favorite character i loved from blood and ash and also you should read crescent city if you haven’t already. the world of sarah j maas is just getting started and nothing beats her writing imo! love hearing you talk about these books :) 18:58
I work as a waitress and it's so upsetting to see how many couples and families will go a whole dinner in a restaurant on their phones without talking or engaging with each other.
Nesta was hard to love because I am her. Her story was so beautiful to me because I got to see myself and my struggles in a person who wasn’t me. And it was powerful. It’s ugly but it’s honest. Forever respect nesta.

Brittany, it's truly fascinating how a seemingly disparate connection can form between two lives, yours as a content creator and mine as an avid viewer. Despite our worlds existing in entirely different spheres, the resonance of your philosophy and worldviews strikes a chord deep within me. Your authenticity, laid bare in every podcast episode, serves as a beacon of inspiration. Witnessing you articulate thoughts with such genuine, human depth encourages me to aspire to that level of certainty in expressing my own ideas. Often, I find myself grappling with shyness and insecurities during conversations, yet your weekly podcasts act as a powerful reminder that sharing one's thoughts, values, and opinions is not only enriching but an essential part of the human experience. Your ability to navigate discussions with such clarity and sincerity is a testament to the transformative nature of open dialogue, reinforcing the idea that our voices are valuable contributions to the rich tapestry of shared human experience
40:38 theyre just called cameos, usually carved from agate or onyx. they would picture a loved one or royalty, and they were initially popular during the Renaissance and had a resurgence in the victorian era
You have the most BEAUTIFUL way of expressing how books make you feel and explaining the themes!! You literally took the words out of my mouth. And also WHEN ARE YOU READING CRESCENT CITY?!?
Genuinely, watching your videos reminds me of hanging out with a best friend. It makes it easier for me to cope not being able to see my bestie often because she lives so far away. Thank you for being a bestie, queen ❤
I never comment on any video but I’ve been going through something with my partner and I feel like I was meant to see this today. Especially the speech you quoted. Love you Brittany
on the cell phone etiquette convo, i think the reason why we can be apprehensive to calling people/friends out on the stuff they do, malevolent or not, is cause we lowkey know that if we do, its a 50/50 shot we stay friends with the person. to me, the response to the call out or convo thats had is so important. if the instinct is to get annoyed with me for even saying anything or have any type of overly self defensive/aggressive response is a major red flag. people dont like getting called out on their shit and in this age, they will drop you like a bad habit before actually reevaluating their own.
yup. had this happen with a best friend. she moved into my apartment along with another girl (individual leases) and about 2 months ago, she moved her bf in without asking, telling us etc. lied about him staying there when she wasn’t (i was ALONE n he’s a felon 🤭). we didn’t talk for two weeks once i called her out. now she wants to move back home bc he’s her manager and she wants to drop him without telling him.
Those broaches are called Cameos or cameo jewelry and traditionally, they are carved our of shell! I'm a cameo collector! Also I think you should read The Lost Apothecary. It has the Victorian England vibes you're looking for!
Also during the regency it was a popular thing to draw people’s side profile I believe it was called a silhouette, that would have been hung on a wall too
Hey girl, I'm obsessed with Victorian and Edwardian eras and I love that you're getting into it. It really fits your art history interests too! If you wanna see some real accurate 1890's looks in a fun context you should watch the HBO show The Nevers. Also there's sooo many videos on youtube about Victorian fashion and culture, I recommend Bernadette Banner. She just put out a video about how people didn't actually stink lol. Would love to see you get into it xx
49:22 if your “friends” get defensive over an action that you find hurtful and disrespectful to you, those are not your friends. Real friends will never want to make you feel negatively in any way and will adjust and respect your boundaries when you communicate that with them. My circle is honestly very small because of this but my relationships are so much more meaningful and fulfilling than the ones with friends that would defend themselves after hurting me or disrespecting my boundaries
My younger sister and best friend passed away tragically 7 years ago as of Sunday, and I still don’t know if I’ll ever have a sister and woman in my life like that again. Cherish it while you have it ❤ Sisterhood is our lifeblood as women

Love your thoughts on silver flames! I’m currently 300 pages deep and the theme of women friendship and this community that Nesta is finding in these women is beautiful. I think these friendships are a driving force is what’s saving her from herself not just the unwavering love that Cassian gives her even in her worst moments.

They are called cameos babe. I have many. From my understanding they had a variety of uses. Dead relatives or lovers. Sometimes current lovers. Sometimes even historical figures or past people of the house etc. I’m not sure which were the most common or prevalent in society at that time but sometimes you can find a really beautiful piece at estate sale jewelry stores. It’s really incredible just how intricate they can be when you really take a look at them.
This is going to be a little trauma dumpy and I doubt Brittany will ever see this but I just want to say thank you to Brittany. I’m sure we can all say that Brittany got us through the tough times, and I can’t thank her enough for the live(s) she has likely saved simply by being a ray of sunshine and smarts. I’m going to be going into a psych unit for my depression (and all that comes with that) this week and I’m watching this to get me through the days until there’s space. Brittany is always a comfort and I love her duality of true down to earth emotion still with that child like positivity and curiosity. Please do some self-reflection. You do not need to drag us down like this with your own insecurities.
Very cool little pieces and they can be remarkably complex images!
they might be my favorite things! thank you!
I haven’t read a book in about 10 years, but my hands are off the WHEEL GOING 90 mph when our queen talks about any book. The power she has
No kidding! Let’s start a book club 🤠
Same. Haven’t read a actual book in years but she makes me want to start reading lol
@@Imblue134you should!! it’s so much fun. i love coming home from work & getting to read my book
That thing Brittany said about friends who will blatantly text and drive GIRLLLL DON'T GET ME STARTED IT'S SO TERRIFYING 😭
I've got a "friend" I don't hang out with anymore, but for a while I was at the point where I'd always offer to drive because I could NOT stand to risk being the passenger in their car!! GET OFF YOUR PHONE 😭
I'm at the point in life now that I'll just take the driver's phone form their hands if they're not stopped.
Phew AMENNNNNN
it drives me nuts when people do that. i make a real effort to never look at my phone when i drive, and seeing people genuinely going 80 miles an hour on the interstate while actively texting is so fucking terrifying to me. i simply can't conceptualize how people think that's really ok, like i don't do that shit alone in my car and i don't even value my own life that much LMAOOOOO
Ugh obsessed. I love that Brittany is a committed lifelong learner. Nothing better than being able to hear these complex analyses she somehow can put forth in a one woman show. Appreciate!!!!!!
Someone needs to make a compilation of the juxtaposition of Brittany being really serious and thoughtful and also being completely unhinged.
my boyfriend has walked in on so many britany moments where she’s objectifying the shit out of a man or talking about dick and i’m like NO PLEASE IF YOU WOULD LISTEN TO 2 MORE MINUTES SHE GETS INTO SOME SERIOUS TALK 😭
14:06 “life is to be enjoyed, and it is so much sweeter and richer when you are holding the hand of your sister.” i am an only child. i have not read this book. i am crying real mf tears. i have friends who are like sisters to me. our love for each other has saved my life
you should read the book!
Yo fuck em.
i think this is a good lesson in not forcing ppl to listen to you, especially when they’re very clearly showing you & communicating that they’re not capable or interested in conversation with you right now. so many ppl are convinced that they’re entitled to others time & energy that they end up like this, making themselves a perpetual victim who’s just so outcast & misunderstood.
It's still pretty mean to ignore someone when they want to connect with you.
@@pixie9499
@@pixie9499I mean sure but if you are friends with someone you should show them some basic respect, I don’t think pointing that out = playing victim
For so many years I resented being a woman, Brittany is part of the reason why I don’t hate being a woman anymore ❤
no seriously, i started identifying as genderfluid bc the woman identity was too overwhelming for me but every time brittany gets literal stars in her eyes talking about womanhood i'm like hey dats me too :'''')

my ex used to literally be on his phone 24/7, especially every time we went out to eat. I remember we went to the aquarium for our first anniversary and while I was mesmerized by watching the sea lions, I turn around and he was sitting on a bench playing clash of clans LOL. then when I started reading heavily again last year, he would get so angry that I wasn’t giving him attention. went so far as to even tell me I couldn’t bring my books to his house! but then he’d turn around and be on the playstation for hours.. when we broke up he actually had the audacity to tell me my reading was a big turn off/ problem for him LMFAOOO
safe to say I dodged a bullet!
clash of clans is insane 😭😭😭 glad u left him girl
I’m so glad you loved silver flames. It’s such an amazing book. It was sometimes hard to read because I went through Nestas journey. I’m still going through her journey. what an amazing synopsis of silver flames. it actually ended up being my favorite book of the series and i resonated so much with nesta.
i think people that don’t like nesta is because they know a nesta and do not understand or just can’t understand how your mind turns on you and makes you feel that you need to protect yourself from everything. and by doing that and having so many walls up you are an impenetrable force but you push everyone around you away and soon enough you find out that THAT is the easy way out. being vulnerable and facing those emotions head on is the hard part and i just am so absolutely obsessed with nestas story and she also ended up being my favorite character
i loved from blood and ash and also you should read crescent city if you haven’t already. the world of sarah j maas is just getting started and nothing beats her writing imo!
love hearing you talk about these books :) 18:58
I LOVE THE ACOTAR TALK. When Sarah J. Maas writes about friendships it hits my heart so deep. I love Nesta and her girls.
I work as a waitress and it's so upsetting to see how many couples and families will go a whole dinner in a restaurant on their phones without talking or engaging with each other.
agreed its so odd how often it happens. i even get young couples where the boyfriend is playing league on his phone the whole dinner

Came here to say this!
Also during the regency it was a popular thing to draw people’s side profile I believe it was called a silhouette, that would have been hung on a wall too
Watching pro silhouette artists work is pretty mesmerizing; they don’t draw, they solely use scissors and paper.
Ugh yes! I finished the Lost Apothecary yesterday! Such a good one.
I second this, I feel like Brittany would love Bernadette Banner
49:22 if your “friends” get defensive over an action that you find hurtful and disrespectful to you, those are not your friends. Real friends will never want to make you feel negatively in any way and will adjust and respect your boundaries when you communicate that with them. My circle is honestly very small because of this but my relationships are so much more meaningful and fulfilling than the ones with friends that would defend themselves after hurting me or disrespecting my boundaries
