  • The Oracle Red Bull-Honda team ran in perfect harmony with the Honda-created Suzuka Circuit in Japan to finish one-two for the third time this season - Max Verstappen crossing the line some 12.5 seconds ahead of Sergio Perez. Carlos Sainz finished an excellent third for Ferrari, ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc, who drove equally well through a long first stint on Pirelli mediums; but the Mercedes customer and factory drivers had to be content with only the minor placings - in the order, Lando Norris (McLaren), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), George Russell (Mercedes factory), Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes factory). Nicely bookending the day for Honda, Yuki Tsunoda took the final point for VCashF1-Honda, thrilling the crowd with two passes on the outside at the top of the hill, on the marbles in the fast esses. In this video, Peter Windsor looks back at the key phases and elements of the race.

      @@Rimpreza I don’t disagree but it’s much easier to be consistent when you are driving at 90%. The one year they had a bad car (or should I say had a bad Renault engine) people were saying Max is finished or they messed up by promoting him as he got into a few crashes because he was having to drive closer to 100%.

    Mentioned Norris passing Hamilton on the outside of turn 1 hurting. What may hurt just as much is Perez (not Max, Checo) passing Hamilton and Russell going into 130R. That’s the denouement moment that you realize that Mercedes are no longer at the top of the sport (or even fighting to be.) Any glimmer of hope that Merc would challenge for wins before 2026 is now gone.

    He surely was not.
    Most of the race he did not use 8th gear, only when needed. (GP told him when he could).
    Furthermore i think it was turn 11 or 14 he was lifting all race to preserve his tyres.
    Listning to their teamradio can give you so much insight how easy Max was doing.
    And.. you then know how much live broadcast and the press creates problems by snipping or getting out of context the radio messages.

      @@sultanoftippoo3857...., and then he'd have lost even more as his tires died. They don't intentionally lift in certain corners for the fun of it, you know. It gains them time in the latter stages of the race and it takes up a lot of time to evaluate what corners cause what deg.
      The art form is to calculate how and when to ease on the throttle, for maximum tire saving at minimum time lost.

    • @sultanoftippoo3857
      @sultanoftippoo3857 2 месяца назад +2

      @@berendsasker6172 You don’t say! My point was everyone else behind him were racing for position so that was the true pace of those cars whereas Max didn’t need to push as hard once he’d built up that 1st stint cushion.
      Obviously the goal of anyone leading a race is to win in the slowest possible time (Jackie Stewart popularised that saying back in the 70’s) and Max did that masterfully today. The reality however is he had a second a lap performance delta over his competition (16 second lead built up in the first 15 laps) and assuming he didn’t push harder than the competition following him then he most certainly would have finished nearly a minute in front of the best placed Ferrari given Red Bulls tyre deg was no worse than that of the Scuderia.

Loved the way he left the pitlane thanking the team for the outstanding job and how he overtook Hulkenberg. Also very happy how Checo got through this weekend. Amazing Q3 result for him and despite the gap between him and Max, his race was really strong, loved his daring overtakes on both Mercedes's in the same fast turn where so I am told it was least expected to happen, in general... Ferrari doing better, which is great but the declarations of them being as fast or faster than RB are well premature. Sainz beating LeClerc once again is going to start causing serious problems for Ferrari. The media is doing its best to keep the idea that Charles is better than Carlos alive, but I feel the truth is coming out race by race. Sainz is thinking and acting to make his race better, LeClerc is just listening to what Ferrari says and hoping for the best.

      It's not the engine. It's the floor and the simplified suspension in the new regulations. Hamilton didn't wash Vettel in 2018 because of the engine. The 2020 Mercedes was an engineering masterpiece from top to bottom. The engine is a red herring.

    Totally agree about overtaking. Not only do we have to put up with incontestable DRS drive by passes, but also the surrendering of positions by drivers on the acceptance that they’re going to be overtaken and the precise telemetry being fed to them by the team, who are telling them the driver that they’ve worked out is who they’re in competition with. As many have said in the past, the sport needs to get rid of the teams’ data gathering devices and telemetry so that the teams are more reliant on the driver’s input.

    But is there any doubt about the RB 20 and the W15? Clearly no. No matter what Mercedes does they are in a deep, deep hole not only against RB at 45 seconds behind but Ferrari 25 seconds and McLaren at 15 seconds. RB could have performed two pit stops and still beat Mercedes. That is jaw dropping. Mercedes needs a W16 now which of course will not happen.

Pole means nothing unless you cash in and win. Previous championships in other divisions although great mean little if you don’t win in F1. If Charles is top tier supposedly then why haven’t Carlos’ three wins been Charles? Not a good look even reported by pundits.
      Is Carlos a Max; not at all. Max is above top tier. Max is in a league of his own.

    I've been saying that I really don't think there's a better option for Max's teammate. Checo, he had issues last year obviously, but hes still a great driver. Not of Max's caliber obviously, but he doesn't need to be. When Checo accepts his role as the #2 and drives for the team first, he's as monstrous (in a good way) a teammate as you could possibly hope. Great defence and more than fast enough to make sure Max himself doesn't get too complacent (not that he ever would, that guy is a machine). So when he accepts his role fully and drives fully to be a #2, there's not a better driver on the grid to have as Max's teammate.
    Alonso is better than Checo obviously but just as obvious is that Alonso is a #1 driver and you can't have 2 #1s on the same team or they WILL fight each other and the result will inevitably be DNFs for one or both, costing constructor points. So as fun as it would be to see the two most skilled drivers on the grid both in the RB, it won't happen unless Alonso fully embraces the role as a #2 and I don't think it's in his nature, and that's not a bad thing, he has the skills to deserve a top car and it's a shame he's only had one a few times.

      Checo is not a good wingman at all. With a car that dominant he should be on the podium every race. Last year he failed to get into Q3 more often than Alonso.
      If the Reb Bulls weren’t so much quicker than the others, the pressure from other teams and drivers would really show this.
      He wouldn’t be there or thereabouts to help tactically on race day.
      It’s all ok being about 3-4 tenths back when RB are so far ahead. But halve that dominance and suddenly there are 4-5 drivers between Ver and Per.
      He does not deserve the seat next year.

    • @thomasjenkins2555
      @thomasjenkins2555 2 месяца назад +1

      By dint of having a grossly superior car. The inter-team battle is embarrassing and in 2023, his average quali gap to Ver was +0.495 seconds. That is appalling and only Sargeant has a larger gap. And he is a terrible driver.
      I’ll reiterate - there’s no way Perez is an adequate back-up in a competitive field of cars. The raw pace of the RB spared most of his blushes last year. Get rid.

      Saying he's a terrible driver is objectively false. Is he struggling a bit in these new regs? Sure. Does he have a harder time extracting the most out of the redbull ? Yes, as it doesn't suit him. But we've seen him be competitive in inadequate cars in the past, and do what he had to in 2021 to get Max the championship both in Abu Dhabi and Turkey(Less remembered that he's one of the main reasons lewis pit when he did and lost points).
      And as of right now, the grid is closer than is has been since the start of 2022, yet he's been doing his job properly. The only exception being Australia, where he got floor damage while passing Alonso. Before that, he was looking to have the pace to get back up into the podium.
      Unless Sainz or Alonso decide to go over to Redbull I see no reason to replace him. @@thomasjenkins2555
