- The Oracle Red Bull-Honda team ran in perfect harmony with the Honda-created Suzuka Circuit in Japan to finish one-two for the third time this season - Max Verstappen crossing the line some 12.5 seconds ahead of Sergio Perez. Carlos Sainz finished an excellent third for Ferrari, ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc, who drove equally well through a long first stint on Pirelli mediums; but the Mercedes customer and factory drivers had to be content with only the minor placings - in the order, Lando Norris (McLaren), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), George Russell (Mercedes factory), Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes factory). Nicely bookending the day for Honda, Yuki Tsunoda took the final point for VCashF1-Honda, thrilling the crowd with two passes on the outside at the top of the hill, on the marbles in the fast esses. In this video, Peter Windsor looks back at the key phases and elements of the race.

I like that Peter always gives Max the credit he deserves. Another weekend of meticulous consistency!
He was coasting the whole time.
Yeah fanboys recognise fanboys.
@@B-kl8vj he probably was. But the point is, which Peter understands, he can do so because he puts himself in a position to do so. Almost always on the front row, good starts, when needing to overtake gets it done quickly, few mistakes if any, and so on. It’s not easy to get where he is all the time.
@@jeffsteyn7174 wow, are you like ten years old?
@@Rimpreza I don’t disagree but it’s much easier to be consistent when you are driving at 90%. The one year they had a bad car (or should I say had a bad Renault engine) people were saying Max is finished or they messed up by promoting him as he got into a few crashes because he was having to drive closer to 100%.
Did anyone notice Red Bulls pit crew today? They had 3 (2.1sec) stops and a 2.0sec stop. Amazing.
They were on fire today!!
I am noticing
Sauber's dream
RB is spot on in all aspects I think. Really everything spot on.
They are just in a league of their own in all aspects of F1 at the current moment.
both ferrari boys with stellar performances. mega job from fernando and yuki.
Agreed, also, credit to the RB pit crew. Together with Yuki, they managed to get points with the 2nd car out of the race.
Yay for Yuki!! And another dominant Max and Red Bull performance. The best analysis on RUclips from Peter.
Lol… dominate p10. The only reason Duki is still in F1 is Honda demands 1 team have a Japanese driver. If Duki drove for a team that didn’t use Honda he would have been fired 2 years ago.
@@LilSebastian_ Red Bull dominated. Yuki cracked the top 10 in a car that isn't top 10...in his home race. Sorry, but I'm happy for him.
@@LilSebastian_You’re stuck judging Tsunoda based on his rookie season. Perhaps it’s time you actually started judging him on his current performances.
@@LilSebastian_when he’s beaten his team mate in every race so far this season so far I even include this one because that crash was entirely Daniel’s fault. Now that is one overrated driver. Yuki was a petulant little brat when he started in f1 he’s doing a great job now.
Delighted with Yuki, he's a little firecracker at times but is fast as hell when he puts his head down and drives with focus. Top lad is Yuki

@@karimmaasri1723its facts though
Don't forget Max got fastest on hards at the end of the race 🥺
I love Peter’s commentary. He is always extremely fair. I like how he also noticed the fact that Charles’ was pushing for the one stop because people dont often realize the race IQ that Charles has. And also recognizing how well Max did. He’s incredibly fair to all drivers and teams.
2 More seasons of Max at this insane level and he could already be at MSC racewins by the end of 2025. Thats absolutely crazy.
Charles said that they've been struggling to put the tyres in the right temperature windows for qualifying, so I think they know what they have to work on to improve qualifying performance. Mega job from both Ferraris and also Yuki who's doing amazing this season
The race isn't over until we have Peter's analysis 👍🏼
Thank you 🙏 Peter for everything you do to break down these races. I really enjoy every episode.
theres nothing to break down ...a boring break down of a boring race in a boring series ! even the drivers are bored & dont deffend anymore😅
Peter, We all know you like Leclerc. Do not compare him, or even put him in the same conversation as Max, Alonso and Lewis.
Leclerc has never proven to be a elite driver. And still after all these years in F1, he still makes the same mistakes.
He is in the same category as Russell, Norris right now. Good but not elite.
Sainz is showing again and again that Ferrari have messed up. Should have kept him!
Lol @ you believing that bs.
@@LilSebastian_😂😂😂😂😂 you are envious that Sainz is destroying the principino… 😅😅😅
If they would have kept him he wouldn't be so fired up. He'll bounce back to his normal level when he feels comfortable again.
@@LilSebastian_He probably also believes the appendix bs. 😂
He should have driven like this the 4 pervious years before this one and maybe he wouldn’t be in this situation
For those saying that F1 is boring, it's actually quite amuzing when you focus on the battle for points (i.e. battle for P10). A really close fight going on! Yuki is currently leading the drivers' championship for F1.5.
It’s so boring they show have battles for zero points to trick you into thinking it’s exciting… so exciting watching p15-p11 battle for zero points.
Gaslighting
@@Karma2Babylon Facts are gaslighting... interesting.
@@LilSebastian_ so it’s boring?
Boring is a concept created by Mercedes, repeated and infinitim by Sky and Merc Fans to get the FIA to act against RB. The hundreds of thousands of fans who pay big money to attend races, clearly have a different opinion.
Great insightful review man😊👍. Thanks again
You missed the part where Alonso purposely gave Piastri drs so that Russell couldn’t pass him. He had to force him into a mistake
Mentioned Norris passing Hamilton on the outside of turn 1 hurting. What may hurt just as much is Perez (not Max, Checo) passing Hamilton and Russell going into 130R. That’s the denouement moment that you realize that Mercedes are no longer at the top of the sport (or even fighting to be.) Any glimmer of hope that Merc would challenge for wins before 2026 is now gone.
Yes and somewhat reminiscent of Alonso taking Schumi there
Lewis had damage from Leclerc in lap one, it's why he let George by.
@@joshn1678It was absolutely minor end plate. Irrelevant.
Peter, greetings from Singapore. I have never missed your qualifying and post-race episodes. Yours is the best and only race analysis worth paying any attention to. Please continue to keep it up and that I am a fan of the great entertainment you put out.
Lack of Defence by drivers is understandable given Alonso gets the penalty he did. F1 is not looking good at the moment from FIA point of view
Sport is dead
I loved this race - the races where strategies matter make it so much more intriguing to watch and predict the different pit stop timings and patterns
After Alonsos penalty last week, not surprised drivers don't challenge or "block" overtakes!
Thank you Peter, great show.
Peter is the only expert who spoke the truth about Mercedes progress in his last video and we can see from the race result. The other so called "experts" were ecstatic when they heard the comments from Hamilton regarding this was the best feeling he had from the car. Anthony Davidson from Skysports even said that Mercedes has made progress just because they looked so quick during free practice session.
Rusel and Humiliton both crap
Sometimes the announcers say things that make me think that either they don’t know what they are talking about or they just trying to invent an interesting story.
I predicted that Lewis would be beaten by 30 sec. or more! It turned out to be about 48.sec.
Yes Lewis said Mercedes is back again. 😂
@@tatum6727 Rusel and Humilton? Who are these guys I don't know them? 😡

5:45 I wouldn't say he did a very good job. He was outqualified by and stuck behind Alonso all race in a faster car.
7:37 Alonso actually managed his softs quite well (on high fuel as well), and could've gone further but had to cover off the undercut from Piastri
Mercedes always said that they made huge improvement and both drivers said the car is much better than before, it good balance or something during FP, and flop in the Qualy and the Race...
And the car is getting worse
Oscar showing his class, and George making George decisions.
Class? What class, he`s clearly a very good driver but a weak strategist and that`s because the lack of experience. Piastri was supported by Alonso half of the race.
PS3 has more wins than Lando. L NERD
@@bishopoftroy Either youre british, or blind. Piastri is clearly the more complete driver, George has proven many times that he is inadequate of making the right decision, or keeping a cool head in adversity.

The undercut on this circuit was incredible. Max was in front of Checo 17 sec before second pit stop. After that 7.8
Actually if you followed teamradio from Max you could know if Max was driving on the Max.
He surely was not.
Most of the race he did not use 8th gear, only when needed. (GP told him when he could).
Furthermore i think it was turn 11 or 14 he was lifting all race to preserve his tyres.
Listning to their teamradio can give you so much insight how easy Max was doing.
And.. you then know how much live broadcast and the press creates problems by snipping or getting out of context the radio messages.
Excellent point 👍🏼
I agree, a visual cue was Max had built nearly a 16sec lead to the 3rd place car behind Perez by lap 15. That’s 1sec per lap and that was the true pace of Maxs Red Bull. If he hadn’t of eased off he would have been best part of a minute clear of the 3rd placed Ferrari.
@@sultanoftippoo3857...., and then he'd have lost even more as his tires died. They don't intentionally lift in certain corners for the fun of it, you know. It gains them time in the latter stages of the race and it takes up a lot of time to evaluate what corners cause what deg.
The art form is to calculate how and when to ease on the throttle, for maximum tire saving at minimum time lost.
@@berendsasker6172 You don’t say! My point was everyone else behind him were racing for position so that was the true pace of those cars whereas Max didn’t need to push as hard once he’d built up that 1st stint cushion.
Obviously the goal of anyone leading a race is to win in the slowest possible time (Jackie Stewart popularised that saying back in the 70’s) and Max did that masterfully today. The reality however is he had a second a lap performance delta over his competition (16 second lead built up in the first 15 laps) and assuming he didn’t push harder than the competition following him then he most certainly would have finished nearly a minute in front of the best placed Ferrari given Red Bulls tyre deg was no worse than that of the Scuderia.
I always come back to this channel after an event
There was no damage to Hamilton's car as confirmed by the team post race. Lewis was just slow struggling with the front left tyre.

Max, Perez and saintz awesome job. Mercedes drivers 🥴🤌🏼
Max was brilliant, again. It's b.s. that he is not getting the amount of appreciation when he is driving excellently. When Lewis dominated F1, he was lucky enough that Max was challenging him with a much slower car.
Peter, thank you for being unbiased, authentic and fair.
what a jam at the end
Also wrong info about the pit stops for Carlos and the RB
Carlos pitted in lap 15 and 36
Leclerc only on lap 26
Sergio pitted in lap 15 and 34
MAX pitted in lap 16 and 34
i think you are underplaying what Lec did on that stint with the mediums.
Great stuff as always. what is the music in the end?
Lando is a realist. Checo was going to get by him, why chew your tires fighting the inevitable pass and risking contact and a flat? It wasn't the end of the race.
exactly, its a marathon not a sprint
Max’s starts have been incredible for a huge number of races now
Great analysis Peter, thank you!!! It was quite a race to experience, so glad I was witness to all of it (paying the price still, fatigue) I'm very pleased for what Yuki has shown and achieved there, hats off to that, he was on fire but without the swearing and cursing, showing maturity and skill! Loved the way he left the pitlane thanking the team for the outstanding job and how he overtook Hulkenberg. Also very happy how Checo got through this weekend. Amazing Q3 result for him and despite the gap between him and Max, his race was really strong, loved his daring overtakes on both Mercedes's in the same fast turn where so I am told it was least expected to happen, in general... Suzuka has never been a match with Checo, 2023 was an absolute disaster but this time around... a wow from me.
Lewis absolutely checked out. He doesn’t care what happens at MB in this race or the rest of the season. Ferrari doing better, which is great but the declarations of them being as fast or faster than RB are well premature. Sainz beating LeClerc once again is going to start causing serious problems for Ferrari. The media is doing its best to keep the idea that Charles is better than Carlos alive, but I feel the truth is coming out race by race. Sainz is thinking and acting to make his race better, LeClerc is just listening to what Ferrari says and hoping for the best.
Again, mentions Alonso only in passing ( pardon the pun ,not on the track)
Alonso is the second best driver on the track and has always been better than hamilton
Yup, Peter don't give credit to Alonso much, imo Alonso did one of the most impressive drives in japan
They should have put Daniel on fresh soft tyres at start as he didn't use them in Q3 lost too much ground early then got Williams on softs up the outside...
Peter, do the streaming during the GP. We switch off our streaming audios and turn on yours. You see what we don't see, we listen and learn depth. Thanks :D
It’s quite clear that Mercedes shouldn’t be deemed a top F1 team anymore. They had a very clear engine advantage for quite a long time. Now that the pu are pretty evenly matched, it’s pretty clear that they’re average at best.
They've fallen back, but they're still consistently in the leading group.
@@MatthewLee8383 Oh I must have missed that!
I agree, they dominated for 8 years due to engine. Red bull is doing it now. I hope we could just go back to refueling and v8s. Right now it's boring racing same as during mercedes days Boring racing.
It's not the engine. It's the floor and the simplified suspension in the new regulations. Hamilton didn't wash Vettel in 2018 because of the engine. The 2020 Mercedes was an engineering masterpiece from top to bottom. The engine is a red herring.
@@KyleJkNOwLedGe Its the wind tunnel correlation. What they do in the wind tunnel doesnt match with what happens on track. So they build a good car in the tunnel, but on track in real its slower.
Thats thier problem.
Totally agree about overtaking. Not only do we have to put up with incontestable DRS drive by passes, but also the surrendering of positions by drivers on the acceptance that they’re going to be overtaken and the precise telemetry being fed to them by the team, who are telling them the driver that they’ve worked out is who they’re in competition with. As many have said in the past, the sport needs to get rid of the teams’ data gathering devices and telemetry so that the teams are more reliant on the driver’s input.
Outstanding race by Charles....I'm sure,he will recover his feeling with Quali very soon🙂
An overrated and average driver.
I really thought George was trying to crash again at the end of that GP. Was exciting tho!
Oscar also had drs with alonso thats why russell went for the dive
I cannot believe that george did not get a penalty for this. There was no way that you could pass piastri in the chicane but he did get piastri out of drs.
I enjoyed after max also from Alonso. I will hope McLaren’s can battle a little more with Ferarri. Hopefully Mercedes also . The brilliance off max is incredible.
I liked watching the highlights and after 5 minutes cut away to dome baseball in spain.
George had zero options to beat Fernando, and if Piastri didn't commit that mistake in the chicane before the last lap George would finish 8th.
@3:59 Ferrari to PW: "And we're checking."
Charles Leclerc putting his hands up saying tyre warmup and preperaton in Quali is something he needs to work on. Shanghai being another front limited circuit, can we expect a quick turn around?
And we can officially say Red Bull and Ferrari had the best winter. Their cars look a class above the rest. I think nobody else is gonna finish on the podium this year without Red Bull or Ferrari having reliability issues.
Haha that "duh" got a major lol from me. Thanks for your detailed and balanced take. And the problem is the cars are too big and heavy to race anything outside of strategy and luck, they do not show ANYTHING about a drivers talent.
MSC cruises?
Is that the 2004 banner Peter?
With Sky Q and watched all from Charles’s shoulder. One small error but beautifully controlled pace throughout. Quite lonely for him with few in sight ahead. Sound of engineer was good but Charles was muffled. Deliberate? Gave Charles Lando’s lap times constantly. Enjoyed supporting Charles and didn’t have to listen to Crofty! (Ant very good mind you). Downside was I had to watch the race all over to see what happened!
That's the Leclerc problem though - always got an unforced error in him.
Fantastic comment PW i appreciate that. 👍👍👍👍👍☘️👋
Yuki was great! Why did so few people notice this???
Its weird that you compare Lando and Lec as if they where on similar strategy lol..Lando was on a 2 stop.. lap 11 and 26...

U are absolutely right about the overtakes. Crofty banging on about how much more overtakes we have saying it’s exciting. But there is ZERO battles or defense. Its just breezing past on the straight. Boring..

13:15 textbook analysis from Peter. as usual.
What i dont understand is that people are saying the mercedes 2024 drive is big , but merc is the 4/5 fastes car on the grid
I agree with Peter Checo Pérez has a good chance renewing his contract with Red Bull Racing, I guess for 2 more years, considering his last results and he feels very good inRed Bull.
I feel like Red bull shud only give Perez 1 year contracts. It clearly motivates him
Charles did a terrific job. His qualifying clearly screwed him. Carlos once again showed his worth as a top tier F1 driver. He has found his focus to showcase his abilities and value.
But is there any doubt about the RB 20 and the W15? Clearly no. No matter what Mercedes does they are in a deep, deep hole not only against RB at 45 seconds behind but Ferrari 25 seconds and McLaren at 15 seconds. RB could have performed two pit stops and still beat Mercedes. That is jaw dropping. Mercedes needs a W16 now which of course will not happen.
Carlos is not top tier, sorry. Solid second driver, but not top tier. He lost 6 out of 9 times to his team mate. His last three races do not cancel his history. He was also not top tier before joining F1. He'll have to do way more than the last three races to be considered top tier. End of.
@@francoforte5382 There is such a thing as a late bloomer and low key which is what Carlos appears to be.
He has found a way to equally perform against his teammate as of late with an evolving car. They both now have three wins in this generation of car do they not. Pole means nothing unless you cash in and win. Previous championships in other divisions although great mean little if you don’t win in F1. If Charles is top tier supposedly then why haven’t Carlos’ three wins been Charles? Not a good look even reported by pundits.
Is Carlos a Max; not at all. Max is above top tier. Max is in a league of his own.
Time will definitely tell the tale on Carlos. I also rate him high because of his mental toughness and because he is a scrapper. A very potent combination.
A lot of praise to the Mercedes drivers ! Little about Carlos Sainz or Fernando’s driving … do they need to change their passports?

Can someone please explain why Hamilton have Russel his spot? I’m very curious about that decision.
Petter its very odd how the british media treat williams and mclaren with infantile hands, two legendary teams that quite frankly have been back of the pack the last 20 years yet Ferrari get torched constantly for not winning. As an outsider not living in Europe this comes off as being very crass. Could you explain this phenomena to me? Would love to hear Scarborough’s thoughts on Ferraris increase in performance through 4 races considering he deemed them to be a team that didn’t have extreme aero changes. Yet they have improved greatly. Mercedes are a clear example of a team that increases aero but is clueless about mechanical…
So, often when Max wins, people "complain" or remark that he wins with such a distance. Sainz won the previous race with 10 seconds ahead as well. Is that something you may expect between team members? Or is there something about driving in P1? (Sure, you have clean air, but you also deal with traffic at some point.)
amazes me how they don't consider Max for driver of the day,
2 starts, not a single mistake, 10+ secs on the driver w the same equipment as his..
yet not even mentioned?
Checo did a great job today
Now that is the weakness of humanity ... most people want their heroes to be as imperfect as they are.
Yep, I've been doing F1 Fantasy this season and I adjusted my strategy because Max will literally never get DOTD despite performing on an absurdly high level. It's sad, I am glad at least Max certainly doesn't care at all 😂 people don't want to see someone excel and push the bounds of the sport, they want to pull him back down like a bucket of crabs if you get my analogy.
sure you could make that case but whats the point of giving him another award. everyone can already see how fast he is. he doesn't need a useless award to prove that hes a good driver, this just smacks of insecurity. i dont think max cares at all. this award gives everyone else a chance to be recognized
Personally, I'd almost never vote the winner "driver of the day". They don't need the consolation prize
I think Louis is at the end of this chapter of his racing career. JMO
I like the Carlos Sainz that tries to put the most shame and regret on Ferrari. For exchanging him with Mercedes' nr. 2
Lewis said he had wing damage from lap one onward because of contact with Charles.
Yes, he did say that, but.....
Mercedes have lost the plot at the minute, and it's showing in the whole team.
Alfonso giving piastri drs to stay ahead. Why didn't he get in trouble for braking early.
Lol because geroge it's never my fault russell wasn't behind him.
Because it wasnt a merc behind him
The reason went for that messy overtake was because he knew Piastri would have had DRS down to turn 1.
With respect Mr. Windsor, the music at the end was better than the whole video! Beat was absolute gas! ⛽️ 🥵
Hamilton was an good driver when he had an excellent car. Now he´s an average driver in a good car.
Max's drive is Textbook, every sector, every lap, every time. His consistency is partially why he gets ahead.
He has no competition, it's terribly easy to be "textbook" when you don't have to worry about anyone racing you.
@joshn1678 and yet, according to trap speeds, he didn't have the fastest car, but DOES have the most consistent times in laps. Guess that doesn't play up to your narrative..
Amazing people aren’t blaming Daniel for having a terrible start and ending up surrounded by other cars
Big questions and getting more vocal ? Why is Stroll still there?
I was genuinely shocked when Lewis offered to let George by…
It still doesn’t sit right.
I've been saying that I really don't think there's a better option for Max's teammate. Checo, he had issues last year obviously, but hes still a great driver. Not of Max's caliber obviously, but he doesn't need to be. When Checo accepts his role as the #2 and drives for the team first, he's as monstrous (in a good way) a teammate as you could possibly hope. Great defence and more than fast enough to make sure Max himself doesn't get too complacent (not that he ever would, that guy is a machine). So when he accepts his role fully and drives fully to be a #2, there's not a better driver on the grid to have as Max's teammate.
Alonso is better than Checo obviously but just as obvious is that Alonso is a #1 driver and you can't have 2 #1s on the same team or they WILL fight each other and the result will inevitably be DNFs for one or both, costing constructor points. So as fun as it would be to see the two most skilled drivers on the grid both in the RB, it won't happen unless Alonso fully embraces the role as a #2 and I don't think it's in his nature, and that's not a bad thing, he has the skills to deserve a top car and it's a shame he's only had one a few times.
Which corner comes after 1b? Why disrespect the circuit by renaming it’s corners?
Checo is a great wingman, if he was on the same level as Max (or close) he would have capitalised in Australia. He should have come first there, as he didn't it is again sure he will never be the first driver within Reb Bull Racing.
Checo is doing what he is paid to do. Score second places and earning constructors' points.
Checo is not a good wingman at all. With a car that dominant he should be on the podium every race. Last year he failed to get into Q3 more often than Alonso.
If the Reb Bulls weren’t so much quicker than the others, the pressure from other teams and drivers would really show this.
He wouldn’t be there or thereabouts to help tactically on race day.
It’s all ok being about 3-4 tenths back when RB are so far ahead. But halve that dominance and suddenly there are 4-5 drivers between Ver and Per.
He does not deserve the seat next year.
By dint of having a grossly superior car. The inter-team battle is embarrassing and in 2023, his average quali gap to Ver was +0.495 seconds. That is appalling and only Sargeant has a larger gap. And he is a terrible driver.
I’ll reiterate - there’s no way Perez is an adequate back-up in a competitive field of cars. The raw pace of the RB spared most of his blushes last year. Get rid.
Checo is mid and Redbull is happy with that as long as he ensures a Constructors win and doesn’t get in Max’s way.
Saying he's a terrible driver is objectively false. Is he struggling a bit in these new regs? Sure. Does he have a harder time extracting the most out of the redbull ? Yes, as it doesn't suit him. But we've seen him be competitive in inadequate cars in the past, and do what he had to in 2021 to get Max the championship both in Abu Dhabi and Turkey(Less remembered that he's one of the main reasons lewis pit when he did and lost points).
And as of right now, the grid is closer than is has been since the start of 2022, yet he's been doing his job properly. The only exception being Australia, where he got floor damage while passing Alonso. Before that, he was looking to have the pace to get back up into the podium.
Unless Sainz or Alonso decide to go over to Redbull I see no reason to replace him. @@thomasjenkins2555
