- OK. Red Bull's Max Verstappen in China again conducted a masterclass. For the minor placings, though, there was again much to admire and to dissect. Lando Norris finished a strong second for McLaren-Mercedes; Sergio Perez underscored the efficiency of the RB20-RBPT Honda by finishing P3; and Ferrari were P4/P5, ahead of Aston's Fernando Alonso, who set a flamboyant fastest lap. Peter Windsor looks back at all this - and more - in the fourth video of his Chinese GP quartet.

Redbull Pitstops needed a special mention. The team just fires on all cylinders even when they don’t really need to. Absolutely bang on every time
The Mercedes domination era created this monster
@mvd4436 and the question is: who's the next monster
Likely mclaren but unless their engine is terrible for 26, merc dominance may have created a self sustaining monster in red bull.

It's always great to watch Alonso doing things that by all means should be impossible.
that awesome steering adjustment brought me back to Brazil 2012 where alonso saved himself from the wet and slippery track...simply awesome
not to mention, all that from a 40+ year old guy
The first RB double-stacking pitstop was brilliant.
RBR. Sadly some may misread your comment as referring to VCARB
I believe their second double pitstop (1.9 and 2.0 s) was even better than the first (2.1 and 2.0).
Rbr is merely toying with f1. Marko may end up driving one race.😂
Double pit stop was fire but screwed Checos race.
@@cococardenashow? They had to pit him at the time
Alonso amazed me even further out of the last turn when he opened his DRS right at the activation point, like the 'incident' was very much in the past, dealt with, forgotten.
Absolutely brilliant to see.
Alonso is a joy to watch race. Combination of raw talent and many years of experience. It will be a sad day when he finally retires.
Alonso was so fast on full throttle the instant his front-wheels were straight too.
ye bet you didnt think of that unless it was for yelistener, fraud
Stroll torpedoed into Ricciardo & the impact forced Ricciardo into the back of Piastri. That's where his damage came from.

Agree with PW 100%, Fernando's catch was one of those moments of pure brilliance, a move of instant instinct born of endless miles racing top-level cars of every type, honing his god-given talent into diamond-sharp race driver perfection. Watching that level of skill is a lot of what's enjoyable about F1 and top level motorsport to me as well. BTW, the top IndyCar drivers, particularly Alex Palou, Colton Herta and Josef Newgarden, have some of the fastest, most precise hands in racing, as they need to. Those cars are a HANDFUL, and on street or road circuits IndyCar drivers probably have more whip-fast opposite lock corrections in one LAP than F1 drivers do in an entire race. The onboards are pretty amazing to watch. Cheers PW on another great recap!
Another Maxterclass 🇳🇱❤️
@@PandaHunt I agree with you, there are too many drivers who would never be in F1. I think that more young talent should be given a chance and that is not the case now. And I think with players who buy a place in F1That should be banned. And as for Max, I've been watching F1 for 30+ years and Max stands out. Imo
One thing I've learn from this race is that, circuits like this with mid-high speed long sweeping corners that leads to a tight/low speed turn on the other direction seem to really suit the ground effect cars.
No one strolls like Lance Stroll 🤣. Unbelievable restart.
A fricking Bum
Not a max v Ham question or a rb v mercedes question but I'd love to see Max drive the Merc after it had been set up for him over 2 hours testing. - I'd love to see what those times are.
Don't forget that RB20 design also took in mind several years of drivers feedback.
I don’t think it’s possible to set the car for him in 2hrs. They could arrive at a ballpark setup to his preference but the fundamental problem with the w15 is they don’t have a consistent baseline to build on hence the continuous experimental setups.
He'd finish p6-7 at best, the Mercedes is the 5th best car.
By F1 standards, Stroll is not only slow, he's a menace. He really needs to find a less demanding formula if he wants to keep racing.
NASCAR
I suggest driving golf carts ....
Yeah and he really doesn't want to be in F1. I feel like his dad forces him to be there 😅
could not agree more. Him and Sergeant Pepper are so bad they become entertaining, but sure it would be nice to give a young true talent the drives instead.
He beat Vettel. Just shows how bad Vettel was
I think a high pressure stacked pit is one of the most beautiful things that can happen in f1
I think Piastri got hit by RIC. Not as hard as he got hit, but enough to damage the diffuser.
Yes, on the replay analysis that Palmer did you can see a piece of bodywork fly out of the contact area between Piastri and Ricciardo a few frames after the Stroll contact.
To watch Max win is not boring its not boring watching Novak beat everyone because we admire how good he is, so we admire red bull and Max of course!
As always, spot on and very clear comments. Thank you PW
Lovely analysis Peter. Always a pleasure. This past weekend in China, the car control and positioning decisions were lovely to watch. The track is wide enough, with tightening radius medium-speed corners that encourage drivers to explore lines and use the track to manage their tires differently than the drivers around them. It was a good race to see the difference between drivers and cars. Alonso's car control was brilliant. I also enjoyed watching Charles and Checo in the final phase of the race, where I first assumed Checo would quickly get by Charles, but he didn't. Even with DRS, it took him way more laps than it should have, given he is in that car, to get by Charles. Upon viewing, it seems part of this was being in the dirty air of Charles, but looking at Charles' onboard, he was placing the car well to be in Checo's way but still not take too much life out of his tires in defense. And lastly, a lovely drive by Max. It would have been nice to see more onboards of Max highlighting some of his driving characteristics and car positioning around the lap compared to Checo in the same car.
Ya, I remember seeing nando’s DRS snap open right after the slip up. Very impressive.
And Oscar’s diffuser got busted up when stroll wasn’t paying attention and rammed into Danny ric who then hit Oscar.
I totally agree with the comment ‘poetry in motion’ regarding Fernando’s racing skill but that is what Max is showing us already for more than years every race. It’s Max and how he is taking the corners why he is always faster than his teammate and everyone else. Wow… yes the RB is a good car but it’s Max that writes poetry in motion with that car.
super review, Peter. Keep on going 😊
Excellent as always. Still baffled this channel doesn’t have a huge following as it deserves!
Fun fact.., since masi got sacked, Lewis hasn't won a race 😂

Such a stupid comment. What does that even mean?!
Stupid comment trying to use Lewis’s failure as an excuse for conspiracy theorists..
I would recommend everyone to watch Charles' on board. He didn't look towards his left. He didn't know about Carlos. Charles was looking at his right towards the apex.
HE CLEARLY DID! Look again (with your eyes wide open please!)
Look at the video . Who cares … yet he was blocking Sainz and lost 2 positions on the move . Him and his team mate . Anyhow , Ferrari was slow today .
Gotta love Max taking the time to do a bit of drifting.
Peter these are very enjoyable, thank you
What a beautiful pictures of the race man. Really really Beautiful
Congratulations Peter for your GP China analysis!!
Thanks Peter!
Leclerc was disappointed today bcs with the mediums he was on par with lando and faster than Perez but with the hards the car had no pace 😐
Shanghai has a weird track surface, even before the upgraded surface. Could just be an outlier.
I wish the tyres were more durable. They all go to hards asap, every race, and even then they slow down to make them last. Strategy is a fine thing, but I for one would like to see more all out racing. Even in the sprint they were conserving tyres.
That’s not racing in my book. I might as well watch an economy run.
Then you have to watch WEC, they go hard, even Alonso said so when he did Le Mans.
More durable????
What would be the difference between a 30 lap stint on hards vs a 30 lap stint on mediums?
Making the tyres more durable will change nothing except maybe a second or two of laptime.
Those ridiculously high tyre pressures is what's killing the racing.
I think the biggest factor is the tires have such a small sweet spot with optimal operating temperature. Pirelli need to work on expanding the optimal temperature range and also the tires seem to lose a ton of performance if you overheat them. Maybe give them the ability to be pushed flat out for about 10 laps before they start to overheat and then wear out in about 20ish. You still have the issue of conserving tires to do less stops but if you can at least make it viable as a strategy you might get some push vs conserve strategic battles.
The drivers need the ability to push hard behind a driver to catch them and then fight to pass them without either having to cool the tires or risk ruining the set for the rest of the stint. They have to work so hard to get the tires in just the right window while simultaneously being close enough to attack the driver ahead for long enough to get a pass done without having to drop back and cool the tires off again and restart the process that it makes overtaking extremely hard aside from DRS passing. Look at Alonso in the sprint, he was conserving and doing just enough in sectors 1 and 2 to stay ahead of Sainz then going hard out of the long corner onto the long back straight to be able to keep himself ahead. The caused Carlos to have to pull a huge move into turn 6 or 7 that turned into a little bit of a melee but was exciting as hell. This was possible because you can’t follow someone that close and push flat out throughout an entire lap without overheating the tires.
Great music at the end, Peter!
I do not care if the father is rich and is the owner of the team. If Stroll proves at the track he is worth, fine, no problem. But I think that by now, we all agree that the only thing preventing Aston from scoring more and being a serious contender in the upper midfield is precisely Stroll. Soon or later, they will need to make a decision, or force one if they want this to be a viable project.
People easily forget Norris dad is super rich and I think a part shareholder at McLaren.
Yet the two lads are miles apart. Lando is actually talented, puts his head down and works his ass off.
Stroll should be doing something else, that seat can go to an actual driver.
I don't care for Aston, but if they had a competent and decent driver like norris or sainz, they would easily be fighting for top 3 teams and not stuck behind the mercs.
One man is carrying that team for another season..
A great idea would be to interview the race engineers at 94 Williams. David Brown or John Russell as ask whether the rear suspension was over complicated and whether a traditional rear suspension would have been a better choice. Why did the 91 Williams not have floor stall. Ask Geoff Willis head of Aero why they did not use flow viz to find sidepod stall preseason? Lots of typical articles recycle old redundant facts. A fresh approach can be invigorating and very interesting. The story of the cars specific problems and how they were fixed to make it win the construction's championship winner would be very insightful and intriguing especially given that the previous two cars were so amazing.
Thanks Pete

Max is unbeatable. Even with two safety cars. 20 secs on poorly performing Perez. Playlist of the year: The Dutch and Austrian anthem. Norris did well👍
Honda-Newey with Max behind the wheel are unbeatable. He's a great driver but the car is what enables the domination. Stick Max in an Alpine and he's not going to be winning races. And before you accuse me of Max-hating, it was the same for Seb, the same for Lewis. In eras of extreme domination it's 70-80% car and 20-30% driver.
@@IanHobday thank u just came to see someone say how it’s not Max but his car and blah blah. Yeah we know the sport. He’s also out qualified his own teammate for 22 straight race weekends. Great analysis as always. I too saw Alonzo's save and was surprised that it barely got a mention on the satellite coverage I followed, other than to remark on how Alonzo didn't suffer Saintz's fate and that it was probably due to different weather and tyre wear. I prefer your observations. Also, really enjoyed the music at the end. What will you play for US GPs?
100% agree with the Alonso comment. That was wild.
Max is the best this sport has ever seen, nobody in the history of this sport is inch perfect turn after turn, lap after lap, session after session, qualify after qualify, race after race and seasons after season for almost 20 years.
His last day off was a karting race in Italy 15 years ago.
Not your Clark, not Fangio, not Senna , not Schumacher and certainly not Lewis comes even close
Amen
Clark was a farmhand boy who just happened to jump in a car and be quicker and smoother than anyone, and later in F1 exploiting the lift-off oversteer of MR to throw the car into the corner faster... The man was an enigma. Like many of the gentleman drivers of that era... It's a different time now. Max has trained on PlayStation before karting (like Lewis), the car responds to him, not the other way around. this is the new generation.

You don’t lean anything from PS arcade games besides track layout but you do learn from highly competitive Iracing, Lewis is not into any of that, if he would have spend time on a proper Sim he would not have been butchered by Max after SC restarts, Max has that experience from Iracing, not from the playstation, Max started sim racing when he was in F1, not before, arace race games is not sim racing.

I had also noticed that glitch in the timing system; it seemed to me that the timing system just kept tracking the drivers on the cool down lap instead of freezing up once the drivers passed the finish line. Lando simply must have passed Max on the cooldown lap. Some positions of other drivers were swapped also.

Hey Peter, how do you feel about this race being a Sprint weekend? It would seem to me that not being there for a couple of years and with the updates to the track, do you think we might have had a better race if we had a traditional weekend?
As always, you are the best
Lovely outro
Peter, just one question, when Ham was a minute ahead of everybody, had you ever mentioned how good the car was??
Hi Peter, When it comes to Mercedes, they seem to be doing better when the fuel load is medium to low, but not Quali levels(Sprint / FPs). Do you think a dual rate / bump stop at a slightly higher suspension height would allow them to keep the car in the right window? Seems too simple of a fix, hence I'm sure that's not it. But just curious
I don't think Lando was expressing a fundamental dislike of ever using engine braking to induce extra rotation but as Nico Rosberg said on commentary he simply didn't want to use up his rears to achieve that extra rotation due to the long term concequences.
Loves the music
And commentary!!
absolute banger at the end
Max, again driver of the day. Perfection.
Yes… oddly changing to the only tires Alonso had left was so strange 🤦🏻♂️
Lewis was insufferable today. Those radio messages going on and on about how bad the car is.. I can only imagine Mercedes will be glad his toxicity will be gone next year. Not to mention he's the one who shouldn't have been in P18 to begin with. The guy is a 7x WDC acting and driving like a rookie.

Well, the Merc car isn't great. Yes, Lewis is a complainer, but he gets to be given the amount of titles he's won. Suck it up, buttercup.😂
Lewis was obnoxious today, that's not being a hater. It's just an observation of what's in front of you. His radio transmissions were embarrassing for a driver of his status and caliber.
Lewis got the most out of the car? Really? He was a back marker while his teammate was running well into the top 10. The safety cars saved his race just as in Imola 2021.
IMO, I think George is doing great so far which shouldn’t be ignored. He’s dragging that dumpster of a car into a battle for 6th in the drivers against Alonso and Piastri while having the worst car in the top five.
Nah, it's still a bit better than the Aston Martin. The difference is that one of the Aston's at least has a great driver in it. Lance and Lewis could compete for the title of the driver who wants to be on track the least.

Petwr, I agree about the Texas having a 3rd Car. It could be a spare, or used by a local wildcard, OR - hear me out- the reserve drivers like Liam Lawson, Ollie Behrman, etc could be in that car, getting real time experience in the cars they will be driving come next season or whatever.
I expect the Aston Martin protest in quali was an exploratory exercise for clarification. They are potentially the most likely to have to leverage that knowledge in future on account of Lance's propensity for bottling it in qualifying
Don't know if you will see this, Peter, but yes good money for Ferrari Clienteli, I'm sure. About 75 cars finished that Mugello race with various levels of fender and bumper abuse. Of the 5 DNFs, of course one was a burn-to-the-ground fire. And while it is fun to poke Ferrari for that, I have to say the cars were pretty bulletproof through the season. I didn't have a single mechanical issue. And heaven knows we were really hard on those engines and transmissions.
Hey Peter that's great Idea to add 3rd car with a local driver could also be a great way to more talented drivers to reach F1..
Alonso needs to drive in WRC! Quick steering skills!!😮😮
Peter, with all due respect, Piastri was like 0.5s a lap slower than Lando on the first stint. He did not do a great job. I like him and his junior credentials suggest he is very good, but it's his second year and he is absolutely not ontop of his tire managment, which is what hurt him today (predictably).
Also, I feel that the FIA took their time with the VSC for Bottas. In my opinion, they should have instantly put on VSC as a conservative measure and to buy themselves time. It mostly keeps the race as it is anyway and prevents someone pumping from adrenaline from locking up and sliding right into the back of that car. Poor job by the responsible bodies IMO.
Totally agree about people complaining Max's dominance, no wheel to wheel racing, etc. They can watch motogp. F1 is much more complex than wheel to wheel racing, and unfortunately, not all people willing to understand it
Max looked like a deity on all the racing laps all weekend. Just this brutally efficient racing God slapping the hopes and dreams right out of the hands of those poor bastards who found themselves near him for whatever reason beyond his control. I mean we see it all the time, and so many people take it for granted, but what this man is doing is insane.
Also I DO like that they had a special pull off for Zhou at the end. I honestly think that every track should do this, have a spot for the "local" driver that didn't finish on the podium to pull into to acknowledge the fans. As most fans who physically come to the races live in that area and as such many support that specific driver or drivers, and that driver should be recognized for drawing in a crowd of people for F1.
Noted your mention of third cars. How about this, Peter? At sprint weekends, teams must run one reserve driver in the sprint instead of one of the main drivers, bringing a third (identical) car. This would give up-and-coming drivers experience and exposure and teams a better measure of their ability. Credit the regular driver who sits out the sprint with any points the reserve earns. Yes, there are logistical problems, but F1 has worked out harder ones.
So Perez who is driving the same rocket ship as Max let a Mercedes beat him in Sprint and a McLaren beat him in the race wow
Red Bull can't find another driver that is as fast as Max, because there isn't one. They have tried.
@@thegotterdammerung Because neither of those are interested in having to compete and probably lose. Those drivers are established and all that can happen is them losing face. What you want is someone who's still relatively new, eager and who has things to prove.

It's not that Perez is slow, he just doesn't like a pointy car like Max - they have different driving styles.
Remember there was a period where Perez was much closer to Max when the car was more balanced, then he started complaining that development was moving away from him.
They (Redbull) are prioritising the development of a pointy car because Max can handle it and that's how he likes it.

It’s so amazing to see how Ferrari got a bit too cocky after Australia, talking about putting pressure on Red Bull, they’ll make mistakes… did not age well. Don’t say that after one race, do it for 10 races straight, then mention it. Like Perez talking about a title after 5 races last year.
Love your professional approach with one exception: you can't be honest about Hamilton now.
Is the Lando short corner thing influenced by the car? Lando has only ever driven McLaren in F1 and it has always had a reputation for being a tricky car and not really to the drivers liking. Does the car simply not reward trying to shorten the corners as the Red Bull does? The Red Bull is clearly superb and was a good car even when let down by the powertrain by contrast the McLaren seems to need constant nursing.
You are the Don! (No doubt!)...#trippinwithjeromestokes
Lewis isn't washed up Peter. He finished 9th and blamed it on tires all day. Not washed up at all.
The wheel correction Vettel made on the last lap of Austin Grand Prix (vs. Magnussen) was even more impressive than Fernando’s.
See the Mika Hakkinen save coming out of Stavelot. Now that’s a save
Aston could save a fortune by paying Stroll to stay at home.
Pay a billionaire to stay home instead of play? 😂
I am mostly impressed by Alonso the last seasons and Verstappens consistenly inner thrife to win all. Mc. Claren and Ferari are pretty booming too. Alonso beast. Picking up the wins Verstappen doesn't.
Great seasons to watch.
Sainz was on a quali lap. So maybe the reason he didn't catch the car was because his entry speed was much higher compared to Alonso in the race? Nothing to take away from Alonso because he is brilliant. Have you guys also seen how fast Alonso switched on DRS after that moment. Most drivers would have taken a second to recover before switching on DRS after such a moment.
Aston fights harder for a qualifying result than Mercedes does for world championships lol
Wish more teams were as aggressive with tyre strategies as Alonso/AM were today.
30-40 lap hard stints is what makes for a boring watch.
1 stoppers should be outlawed and Pirelli should develop tyres that can handle lower pressures.
Thoughts?
I think the Norris having won was a bug because Norris overtook Ver in the cooldown lap, and for some reason the system was still counting the race position.

12:06 Aston Martin protested it because Stroll missed Q3 by one position, and he wouldn't have if Carlos wasn't allowed to continue. Nothing to do with Fernando.
I thought the FIA had an awful weekend. Apart from the timing issues, when Bottas stopped his car, it was obvious that it would need a safety car. As it was an engine failure, it's likely that hydraulic power is lost.
I'd much rather the FIA consider safety above all else. They have the ability to speak to the team (& they can speak to the driver), and I'd always rather a short safety car, than yellow flags (even if they are double waved). The car was in a dangerous position, right where anyone with brake issues would end up.
I am not sure ... just a gut feeling. But Fernando kinda got his mojo / drive back. And not to stick feathers up into Max his butt. But they both drive and not giving a flying fuck. They are having FUN with a capital F. It's like they both push each other without being into direct 'battle' Racing. Love it.
I don’t think Sergio was too conservative. I think it was smart racing on his part. We would have been saying that Sergio should have been more conservative had there been a collision between him and Alonso
In all honesty Peter 7:45. Lewis got the best out of the car? Lewis was on average after the safetcy car, 2.034 seconds slower a lap than Max. Piastri got damage because Ricciardo drove into him, after Stroll drove into Ricciardo. Norris didn't follow Leclerc into the pits, they both pitted because of the Virtual Safety car and Norris went just past the pit when the Virtual Safety car was deployed so he had to drive an extra lap.
