Lake Maracaibo is the stormiest place on the planet. Thunderstorms rage above this massive body of water for up to 200 days of the year, with each ear-splitting event lasting for several hours. But why? Graeme Anderson lists the factors that create Lake Maracaibo's seemingly ever-lasting storms.
Lesson by Graeme Anderson, animation by D. Lee Peffer II.
Not only is this a particularly clear explanation, it’s also the most beautifully illustrated TED-Ed I’ve seen.
You would think people who say "lightning never strikes it the same place twice" would all be dead by now.
Yeah, they must be "shoked" to hear this fact.
Here is the reason why (It is striking in the same place) well, you know metal objects can get striked easier because if the material it's made of. Do not wear any metal objects on you or your wrisk because it will burn badly.
If you stand on the Eiffel Tower, your a lightning rod
@@kingofdellwood not only that but a first lightning ionizes tge air which then becomes a far superior conductor, but I think a study should be made to see if this is actually a factor or if air mixes so fast that it makes no difference
I live in cucuta, Colombia, near Maracaibo, I can see it from my home, it's magnificent, you are looking at the sky when suddenly you see huge purple flashes of light between the clouds
Juan Arias magnificent until you get struck
Magnífico a la par que aterrador.
First time I hear something not bad about Venezuela.
This is a great joy for me because I'm Venezuelan :D
+Mr. Gecko the Salamander Same here
Mr. Gecko the Salamander Qué fue compatriota. ¿cómo sigue la vaina allá?
Mr. Gecko the Salamander KHE
Me too! And from Maracaibo. And i feel great about hearing something good bout Venezuela
*OMG!!! i live like 1 hour from there!!* we call it "el relampago del Catatumbo" it's pretty awesome
👍
what does that translate to?
You never explained how the story of Drake's invasion ended.
+Steven Hyman that was shocking
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky what did drake say when he got caught in a tornado? "Started from the bottom now we're here"
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky He would fail his surprise attack and be shoot at from the shore and have to retreat out to sea.
Well English ain't the first language there so that ought to be a clue
@@rawstarmusic He ran robbing sprees on both coasts of the continent for at least a decade without getting captured a single time. He's fking good at running away.
I'm from Maracaibo and I felt really identified. :)
Venezuelan here! yeah that región is home of the catatumbo lightnings which set off in bursts of thunders which make absolutely no sound, it's pretty incredible
I loved that animation, it reminds me of the Wallace & Gromit shows and other shows from my early childhood.
+Carrie Wright Nothing more exciting happen in your later life then?
+rawstarmusic
oh plenty has, I'm just a sucker for traditional animation and old school style films like the original Clash of the Titans.
I used to live there on a building right in front of the Maracaibo lake it was beautiful every night I could see these amazing phenomenon it wasn't scary at all
The effort put on the animation is simply amazing!! Way to go TedEd!
Perhaps we could've been a British colony if it wasn't for those damn lightning bolts.
Who knows!?
hahahahahaha
Jose Manuel Monserrat Who cares if we actually became a British colony? El Catatumbo is worth it! :)
Jose Manuel Monserrat Lo Dudo.
you from Venezuela? I thought you people have no internet and have a civil war
Do they ever make a bad video?!
never
+Benjamin Smith idiot, do some research before saying that, evolution is 100 % fact.
+Benjamin Smith have you heard about Darwin's birds.
+Benjamin Smith evolution has proof.
+Benjamin Smith If you don't like scientific theories, please stop using your computer. It works because of quantum theory.
My father was a Vietnam fighter pilot. When he came home from the war, he worked at NWEF (America's Nuclear Weapons Evaluation Facility) in Albuquerque, NM. There was this little, stone-sided, copper-roofed cabin that he flew past fairly often. It was way up on the side of a mountain. My dad fantasized about finding out who owned it and buying that little cabin when he left the military.
One evening he was flying past "his" little copper-roofed cabin in a thunderstorm and saw it being nearly continuously struck by lightning. He was sure that whoever owned it had been killed in it.
Well, I don't think your dad wants to buy that house anymore
but the house would have acted as a faraday cage and the lightning probably would have travelled on the outside of the house.
bananian
Only if the house was completely enclosed in copper. Just coating the roof won't do it.
@@davidbuschhorn6539so dead if only copper roof and not dead if whole house copper?
I'M from Maracaibo!
Could we somehow harness power from those lightning bolts from there?
+ZimmerSquash may be yes, but Venezuela is a banana republic, government don't care that kind of investment.
+Andrés Castillo okay venezuela is top three shit tier countries but you can't just harness the power of lightining. it's not that easy.
+GraveUypo The country is not shit, it is actually the best country in the world if you actually think about it. the government is shit. two big differences
Cristian Finianos
i'm sorry, but i see no measure in which it is even remotely the best in the world.
the land itself is ok (again, not the best in the world), but pretty much everything else is in shambles.
+GraveUypo dude the land itself is perfect for agriculture, the whether is almost perfection. We don't just have lake maracaibo, we have angel falls the longest water fall in the world (998 meter) we have "la gran sabana" which is a place were thousand of tourist all around the world visit. Half of the amazon o forest is in venezuela which is the biggest forest in the world and it's considered "the lung of the world" and our beaches are breath talking for example los roques is arguable one of the most beautiful beach in the world. We are the country with the biggest oil reserve, we have a massive reserve of good, aluminum, uranium, platinum, copper etc... And we never had slavery issues (since our country was liberated from spain) we don't have much of a problem of racism not like USA and sexism is no much of a problem here. I can keep going if you want but i repeat our only problem is out government (We are about to completely change the government)
El relámpago del catatumbo, mi Venezuela hermosa!!!
Aren't those sailors afraid of getting struck?
+AZ N And hopefully the giant metal hull of the ship would act as by far the most direct path to earth (which yes in this case is the water) instead of the sailors.
i love this guy's voice, i could listen to him talk forever he just sounds so interesting
Awww, I saw the video in my subscription feed and when I read the title I answered without doubt ¡El lago de Maracaibo! Obvoulsy 'cause I'm Venezuelan. Despite that, I have never gone there :(
You surely can go here! There's a lot to see in this country. Just avoid the politicians and look at our beautiful parks, culture and gastronomy!
I'm venezuelan and I'm so proud of the fact that I knew it was Venezuela just by reading the title!
the sanimation was absolutely stunning :3
Thanks! You've just helped me add to my bucketlist!
Your videos are amazing. So entertaining and I always learn so much :)
Might be a place to try out harvesting lightning energy.
Wow, that was awesomely made!
Loved the way you filmed this one 👍🏻
bucket list travel destination
Wow - the animation is very smart and unique! Respect to the animator!
the visuals on this are killing it
They did such a good job with this video, I love it ❤️
Never clicked on a video that fast!!! I live at the shore of this lake!!! and trully the thunder storms are amazing!!
Wow! What great info. Thanks for sharing!
Im Venezuelan, and one of my dreams is see the "Relampago del catatumbo" in person
excellent video. I really liked the animation
This video is awesome!!!! :D I love the animation (it's stop motion right?), it is orchestrated masterfully! :)
That was shocking
People keep saying that the view is absolutely stunning
Incredible! On the map, I found that Lake Nicaragua shares similar conditions with Lake Maracaibo. Does it have a high lightning density, too?
My jaw dropped when I saw that arm; TedEd using not using animation!? It took me by total surprise!
Dear TED, can you make a video in which to explain why there are no lightnings nor thunders during winter? :)
Cold air can't contain nearly as much water vapor as warm air. Heat produced by the condensation of water vapor into liquid drops is what drives thunderstorm updrafts.
Great video - thanks:)
This is awesome! I live there :)
Great video. I'd like to go there. Thank you for this presentation.
+Ken Karnes I don't recommend bro. Venezuela is one of the most dangerous places in the world.
I agree with you. I just wish we could get a pass from the bad guys because I have no interest in what they are doing, I am only interested in the weather of the region. Thanks.
I remember once I was visiting my family in Maracaibo and by cousins told me the lightning ment it was the end of the world. I had never seen so much lightning at once, so I actually believed them. My poor naïve self was terrified.
I live in Maracaibo(:
yay they mention my beautiful home
I gotta say, I'm a little disappointed you didn't use Thunderstruck by AC/DC in the intro
I love Ted-Ed
This is probably unfeasible, but could it be possible to harness that impressive supply of lighting strikes as energy?
I've been in the mountain range to the west many times, at about a 100 miles from the lake, there the lightning can be seen reflected in the clouds every several minutes at night.
+José M. Rivas y el calor a medio día qué tal?? XDXD
great Video
For pictures and videos just google: Catatumbo Lightning Maracaibo Lake Venezuela
Kalene in north western province of Zambia has the most lightning strikes in Zambia
What duration was used for the strikes/km² measurements?
Hi! I have a question (I doubt anyone answers but worth a shot lol). Florida has often been called the "lightning capital of the world" and when I did some digging, I found a lot of sources claiming Four Corners, FL had 474 strikes/km/yr (as opposed to ~300 on the lake). I was wondering if there was any other metric that went into determining "lightning capital of the world" or if its just a matter of conflicting numbers.
It is nice to see all the diversity of the Ted-Ed community! Shout out to my Venezuelan.. peers? friends?
Fuck that was good. I just subscribed and am glad so far.
Well, I know where I wanna go golfing this year!!!
Behold: El Relampago del Catatumbo
sir can u tell me which program u are using to make these videos evry videos u make how u make that and which program u use in drawing and sound effects plz i am a big fan of yours so plz be quick
That lake should be called, lighting lake.
Cool now I know a lil more
My question is why is there a Spanish colony there in the first place. "hmmm we sailed to the new world but i have no idea where to make landfall.. oh i know how about that dark shadowy place bathed in perpetual storms with ominous lightning everywhere."
I'm from Venezuela but I've never been in maracaibo , hope to go there soon
+Valeria Linares Saludos, soy de Caracas
Andrés Castillo Hola saludos! Yo igual :)
LUXORM2D Vergacion!!!
Real question
In this places where lightning strikes the most but does the lighting still strikes at the same spot twice?
Would love to go there one day
+Travels & Chases you'll change your mind when you know Venezuela is one of the most dangerous places in America. Murders, kidnappers, thieves, etc
Could lightning energy be harnessed with lightning rods connected to batteries/electrical grids?
I always wanted to go there
+The Real PyroManiac In Maracaibo the heat is over 40ºC bro. It's hell. Beside, Venezuela is one of the worsts places to travel to now.
Middle East?
+Andrés Castillo what if it is hell? Anyways idc cuz i believe in rebirth
+The Real PyroManiac is middle east without the bombs, i now that because i'm from Maracaibo
Why?
Catatumbo!!! ...and on 2/8/2016 I saw that 20 people who saw this video are against learning...sad!
you feel special when that place is on you country

I live in Venezuela Lool
Does anyone know of where I can get hold of an English translation of La Dragontea?
+Hayley Longster Internet perhaps like you know Ebay.
+Hayley Longster La dragonea is a plant
I heared that in that lake zeus is taking a bath there!
I wonder if there's any way to harness all that energy?
Yay, my country featured in one video
This might be a naive question, but is it possible to harness that energy? I know it's theoretically possible, but is it economically feasible?
13000m^2 Area of metal sheet for effective results? I don't think so.
for "effective results", Lightning Rods can't catch up all the charge. What if lightning strikes at a distant place from the rod ?
Epic !
Shush, i was here first
+kummerk Noob :P
Tadija Toholj :D
i would like to see some actual footages.
Could we harness that "basically free electricity"?
Like to this video :) I’m from Venezuela
Is this the same Francis Drake that came up with the Drake Equation?
**open google image and search for lighting in lake maracaibo**
i wonder how much electricity they can absorb from that area to use for human use?
Does someone know what maracaibo means? I'm curious
+J Renaud (Japanese_legz) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maracaibo#Etymology
+J Renaud (Japanese_legz) Well its definition is really ambigous, some say its the name of an Indian Cacique that lived there, others say that its origins is from "Mara Cayó" (Mara felt) because "Mara" was supossedly another indian that fought against the colinizers.
no video or even a picture?
So sailors consider it a natural beacon, but that English man did not even notice that !
talk about a perfect storm
what if they put lightning rods there, and connect them to a massive battery?
they could add resistors along the wires as well
I find out strange how artsy Ted ed gets. great vid though!
Want to live There
haha no you don't
why do people have a dominant hand?
Am I the only one who only knows about Francis Drake from the Uncharted games???
Basically thunder plain.. look out for dark ixion
How shocking.
