It’s actually a great articulation of how the One Ring makes ruins of any who try to use it. Even if you initially have good intentions, you are still attempting to impose your will on the world, appropriating power to yourself and justifying it by the surety of knowledge that you are right. This is a complete failure of humility, and eventually leads to one’s will and the good becoming conflated, and the power becoming an end in itself. Surprisingly great writing from the showrunners - an aspect of the story they actually seem to have properly understood.
I'll give them that they got that part right. Sauron was always obsessed with the idea he wants to bring order to the world, that was his excuse for everything. What he thought represented order was 'good' and everyone who disagreed with his views deserved to be destroyed. Like Morgoth, he was always a narcissist telling himself pretty little lies of how he means well and deserves endless respect and obedience, despite harbouring contempt and hatred for everything and everyone not him. He was just a bit better at believing his own lies and nonsense to the bitter end, whereasMorgoth before his defeat was a self-admittednihilist who wanted to end the world because they refused to worship him as a false god (an abuser and tyrant wishing to be seen as a supreme deity). Sauron pretended otherwise, in order to lie even to himself. He killed Galadriel's brother Finrod for sport (after said Finrod bought Beren and other human companions time to escape in the First Age). The sheer amount of Morgoth's crimes Sauron eagerly assissted in is very long, including spearheading the creation of various monsters, not to mention mass murder of innocents and attempts to destroy whole cultures. After Morgoth's defeat, Sauron decided he needs to one-up his former master in regular attempts at atrocities, enslavementand destruction.
No he wasn't. Sauron ASKED for pardon from Eonwë, who told him he could not pardon one of his own order and that he must face Manwë for judgment. Instead, he fled back to Middle Earth and tried to redeem himself through good works, until he believed that the Valar were no longer interested in Middle Earth and tried to set himself up as the new dark lord.

A lot of the hate Sauron got in this show is people took him at face value like maybe they might see in Game of Thrones. He doesn't love any elf thats for sure. A lot of people tried to put a human side to him when the show tricked them into thinking that and there just isn't any.

When Sauron says he sees no difference between saving and ruling Middle-Earth, that really felt in character for him. The dark lord so obsessed with order and perfection that he is willing to subjugate all the races of Arda. As much as I dislike this show, I can’t deny the few genuine good moments.
@AL-YT001 Okay first of all, there’s no such thing as “white culture.” You can refer to European culture, but even that isn’t accurate because cultures and traditions change depending on the group of people in a certain region. There is a big disconnect between Western European cultures and Eastern European ones. And the difference is more clearly seen in continents that used to be European colonies. Even LotR took inspiration from various mythos from different cultures (mainly European ones but still). To lump it all together as “white culture” is ignorant and racist. Second, people of color aren’t “envious” of other cultures (which btw, racist assumption that reeks of white supremacy). What it boils down to is actors in an industry being selected by studios who make it a point to appeal to audiences with diverse casts. And this is nothing new. In past years it was the reverse where ethnic roles were played my famous to white people to appeal to the masses. There is no big conspiracy to steal other people’s culture…it’s just a means to turn a profit

Maybe part of him did truly fall for her but it’s tragic in that it would end with her being his minion. Some kind of dark elf witch and losing all the things he fell for in the first place. Kind of a Rey/Kylo from Star Wars situation. If they got together while he was on the dark side. They were actual soul mates but with him drowning in darkness the part that truly cared about her would be overpowered by the part that wanted power. Causing her to leave him and him to rage. It’s very much like this actually. Destined to end in toxicity or tragedy.
@@ABCD-xg6nrAgreed. Sauron didn't "fall for" Saruman his true servant, in that he didn't develop compassion or empathy for him or offer to share power. Whatever we think about the show, they nailed what Sauron is all about. "Save (Middle-Earth) or rule?" "I see no difference". That's the whole point of Sauron. This is maybe the only thing they did right. Sauron is convinced, until his final demise, that he's doing what's good. That is why he's a well written vilain.

Guys, this is just very very expensive, non-canonical fanfiction series. Basically, Middle Earth is going to burn for next thousand years because Galadriel just won't date Sauron.
I believe Sauron's desire to make Galadriel his queen was genuine, and he saw them as co-ruling Middle Earth. But instead of her binding him to the light, he would have bound her to the darkness. Not deliberately, but because to him, the things we associate with darkness ARE the light. He would have encouraged and enabled her worst instincts, and in the end she would be his mirror image - evil believing itself to be good.
He didn’t have a capacity for marriage. He needed to undercut her power and will by any means necessary, and some fairytale “happily ever after” crap nearly worked.
Sauron does not wish to be good. Ever. Sorry. He wishes to take delight in slowly bending her to his will, squeezing all the beauty and light out of her, turning her desires into his. Once achieved, he will brutally murder her. Sauron will share his dark throne with no one.
He desires not to make her his queen but his servant, the same way Morgoth made him his servant. She was a powerful elf. The show did not do justice to her actual power and potential before she even bore Nenya. It merely depicts her as some ordinary Legolas/Tauriel-like warrior elf when in truth, she was so much more. She had learnt magic from Melian during the First Age in Doriath and her hair had captured the light and power of the trees of Valinor. She had Vanyar, Teleri and Noldorin blood. Sauron knew that she would be a valuable ally and asset if he could sway her to his side.
He was put to work on something that has one of the greatest legacys in book/movie history. Look at the hobbit movies its good but didn’t live up to the legacy exactly. When your given handling of something as big as the works of tolkien and with the large fanbase it has its hard to not mess up. Especially if you dont have every possible thing at your disposal.
@@JP-um1nj and we could possibly know what and or how the Maiar think. Offering someone, someone mind you that you have been trying to emotionally manipulate, offering them EVERYTHING isnt something Sauron would have done? did you not offer rings of power which in essence he told the wielders, it would provide them with things no normal mortal could? its the same thing but using a different gift... you are offering someone who feels like they have nothing and no one, something and someone... that is why it is quite powerful. do we not fall prey to such things daily? wars have been started over less. if he truly only meant to turn Galadriel and not actually try change. it becomes about the whole turning the pure, evil, and there is no greater thing for someone who only seeks to be "better" then everyone else. though one could argue that, because Sauron had a thing for perfection and "order" he wanted to take something that could be "considered" perfect, as the evils are seen to be, then to again, form that in his image. this again all leads to actually, trying to win someone like that over with "love" or "companionship" again with everything stated before.... it again would be a very powerful bond and one which would VERY hard to break.
The worst part about this series is it has single handedly spawned a Galadriel X Sauron ship, which was never, ever, ever intended in any means by Tolkien.
Also this is our so called “master manipulator”, a guy who fucking revealed himself because Galadriel wouldn’t join him. Sauron would NEVER have revealed himself to try and get Galadriel to join him! He has literally no need for her. Why in Tolkien’s name did they write this crap.
It is an excellent interpretation of a possible Sauron, it is faithful to the attributes of the books even. Where Morgoth was the strong evil, Sauron was the manipulative evil, saying the words you want to hear, making you think the ideas he puts into your head are your own. But one of his worst weaknesses is being unable to understand "good" and underestimating his enemies, despite being very intelligent he lacks wisdom, he is paranoid but it never occurred to him that someone would try to destroy the ring instead of using it. He reveals himself to Galadriel because he sincerely thinks that he has already won her over to his cause, that she is nothing more than a stupid elf who needs a shoulder to cry on, he promises to rule together, "heal" Middle Earth. When she rejects him he tries to blackmail her. I think it represents good character development for her.
This show is pretty mediocre, but if you think about it, Sauron trying to seduce Galadriel, while it has literally zero basis in the books, in some sense it’s like a sick and twisted version of the relationship between Melian and Thingol.
This is a really powerful scene. And one thing about all Sauron said is right: He never lied. He just kept spaces in what he told about himself, spaces Galadriel filled with what she wanted things to be... So, this was a lesson Galadriel hab to learn, a lesson that made her who she is in the 3rd Age.
@Good Day Well, I know Tolkien's original writings. So, I agree with You in some way. Nothing more to say as the Istari originally came to Middle Earth in the 3rd age ! BUT: How would You depict a developement that goes over thousands of years in a series that is meant to keep the audience ? I think it's very difficult (if not impossible) to do such a project without distancing from the original author in some way and to go Your own ways. Remember: We talk about two completely incombatible genres, at least considered this particular project. And for that point of view, we still have a quite good series and the actors perform very well.
@@25793 You hit the nail on the head. The artistic integrity of the original works isn't marketable in the world of trivial mass media junkfood TV. Which is why this show is frankly trashy compared to its source material. I suspect that most people would just struggle with the attention span needed to appreciate the aesthetics of Tolkien's story ... this show isn't really about art so much as it's about generating revenue and audiences. What's somewhat amusing is that they might even have fallen short of those crude goals, as I hear audience retention was problem.
Regardless of what you think of it lorewise, "The Temptation Of Galadriel" is really, really well done. In particular the scene with the reflection in the water.
Well, I disagree, I think it's cheesy and lacking in all the subtlety and grace of her actual temptation story. The lore has its own aesthetics, so I think it's not really plausible to evaluate the aesthetics of this show while disregarding the lore. :)

@AL-YT001 if that’s your biggest concern than you got issues pal

The last temptation of Galadriel
Actually that happens with the one ring.
I actually think a part of Sauron really meant what he told Galadriel. I think he also fell for her too. At least a part of him.
And Saruman is a Maia just like him, they can see the world from the same perspective. Sauron perfectly fits here in the typical archetype of Satan (as a deceiving tempter, the Father of lies etc ).

Sauron anyway want to rule middle earth despite the galadriel arc
2:07 Sauron: “I would make you a queen…stronger than the foundations of the earth.”
Galadriel: “Would all love me?”
Sauron: “And despair.”
2:07 nice callback to galadriels speach in LOTR when she's tempted by the ring
The Galadriel Rage Face is such a meme/thumbnail gold mine. Never gets old.
It's probably why she got the role. Some millennial casting director looked over at the zoomers on TikTok and said 'hold my beer'.
Look at the eyes os Sauron when he screams. It is like the eye of Sauron in Peter Jekson movies.
Director: umm Galadriel can we get some actual emotion please?
Galdriel: (screams like a lunatic)
Director: um I guess that works?
I believe Sauron's desire to make Galadriel his queen was genuine, and he saw them as co-ruling Middle Earth. But instead of her binding him to the light, he would have bound her to the darkness. Not deliberately, but because to him, the things we associate with darkness ARE the light. He would have encouraged and enabled her worst instincts, and in the end she would be his mirror image - evil believing itself to be good.
He didn’t have a capacity for marriage. He needed to undercut her power and will by any means necessary, and some fairytale “happily ever after” crap nearly worked.
She also brings this up in the movies during the mirror scene.
Sauron does not wish to be good. Ever. Sorry. He wishes to take delight in slowly bending her to his will, squeezing all the beauty and light out of her, turning her desires into his.
Once achieved, he will brutally murder her.
Sauron will share his dark throne with no one.
He is a deceiver, even you a mere mortal easily deceived by him. You think his desire was genuine, it was not.
I thought people drawing Morgoth x Sauron was the weirdest fanfic of Middle-earth ever created.

But one of his worst weaknesses is being unable to understand "good" and underestimating his enemies, despite being very intelligent he lacks wisdom, he is paranoid but it never occurred to him that someone would try to destroy the ring instead of using it.

And for that point of view, we still have a quite good series and the actors perform very well.
