    Oh, so he used his own markings... I had to check the score preface on imslp, never seen some of these symbols before.

      It means use the whole bow. You can check IMSLP for this. I picked Hubay version for this video.

    violinists can do all this but if you write a low f# they get all bent out of shape.

      You can also check Lipiński's 3 Caprice de Concert Op.27, where the first note in 3rd Caprice is a low F##.
