I started learning to play guitar after I retired, about 7 years ago, as a "hobby," and to help ward off the "old timers" diseases. My first guitar was a Squier Butterscotch Blonde telecaster that I bought used. I had it set up, added new strings, and bought a Marshall 15 watt amp. If it wasn't for a few friends, and RUclips, I wouldn't even have attempted to learn how to play. I have since added an Epiphone Hummingbird Artist acoustic, an Oscar Schmidt Delta 30 semi-hollow body, a Fender Telecaster Modern Player, and a used MIM Fender strat to my collection. I still consider myself a beginner/intermediate player, but man do I enjoy playing, and continuing to learn! Thank you, Adrian for all you do, as well as others on here that give freely of their time and talent! Cheers, mate! :)

Telecasters are the real work-horse guitars, offering such a broad range of possibilities - I recently bought a Squier Tele, and playing it was like meeting an old friend!

Got a ‘52 Tele reissue from ‘99. Immediately fell in love. Never played a 7.25 radius before it, but playing chords is effortless. It’s like your fingers fall into the right place every time. Neck pickup is okay, but the bridge pickup is out of this world.

I bought one of these reissues in 1990 not long after they came out. I recognise the neck pocket gaps!lol. It was a great guitar and I regret selling it to fund some verandah doors! The nitro on the back of the neck never set, tough, and kept coming off the whole time i had it. But in terms of everything it does and how it plays you are spot on. Can’t go past a Tele.

My favorite Tele was a G&L ASAT Classic with the dishpan bridge, six saddles, a three-bolt maple neck, and Mary Kaye finish. Loved that guitar.

I'm glad you did this video showing your tele. When I was fairly young, and saw electric guitars in a store, the one that caught my eye was a real 1952 blond tele. Years later, in fact just 2 yrs ago, my wife bought me a tele, I choose the MIM Baja blond tele, mainly because I like the chunkier neck on it vs the American made 52 reissue. Mine is all stock except for, and like your tele, I have Callaham saddles on mine. In my humble opinion the Baja tele is a vast improvement over the Classic Vibe tele, which I had for about 3 yrs. Now, if I could play my tele as well as you , I'd be a happy man.

I'd been avoiding buying a Tele due to the reputation they have for not easy playability. Finally, after a couple years of studying guitar (and playing short-scale Epiphones and Fenders) I picked one up and was stunned by just how great it felt! True, the 25.5"-scale neck is a bit more of a stretch-and I find it easier to manage the longer scale tension with 9-gauge strings-but overall the Tele is a joy to play and a very "amp-friendly" guitar.

    • @Squall6575

I think Teles are some of the most player friendly guitars out there. Especially with the more modern c shaped necks. I admit the old 50s u shape necks are tough to play on for sure.

Thanks, mate! I picked up a Fender Squire Tele for $389 a couple of years ago at Sweetwater and have been pleased with the instrument. Surprisingly good value! Anderton’s did a blindfold challenge (video is on YT) and the Squire Tele passed with flying colors. 👍🏻

A good Telecaster is a wonderfully versatile musical instrument... any style, any sound... it's fun exploring the sounds this terrific guitar will produce. Like the Strat it has its own classic in built sounds... something which probably does contribute to its sound character also is the intonation compromise at the ash tray with two strings per saddle adjustment. Really nice video.

Tele’s are the best IMHO. They just feel good, I have four but really only play one because it works for just about everything. Adrian, I don’t know who does it across the pond but in addition to your adjustable bridge, You should look into a hand-made compensated nut to tune your lower frets.

Tele is great to take camping - so tough you can drive the stakes in the ground with it! For an older back they can be heavy. To my delight, I bought a used USA Tele Thiline Elite that weighs 6.6 pounds compared to my USA Tele's 8.6 pounds....

Thanks for this, Adrian. You mentioned recommending a Tele (potentially Squier) as the first/beginner electric guitar. I would always recommend one of the Epiphones, mostly because you can still get single coil-like tones, but with the humbuckers one avoids the potential buzz that is a hazard of using unshielded single-coils. I have also noticed that my LP and Epis have narrower fret spacing than my Strats, and would think that this is a better choice for those with smaller hands (e.g., kids).

So many associate Jimmy Page with the Les Paul yet it was a Telecaster that he used exclusively on Led Zepplin I and II. The dragon one Jeff Beck gave him of course. He also had a few others later on he used quite often, one with a B-Bender as well. Page also stated the Stairway solo was done with a Tele. In reality he should be at least as closely associated with the Tele as the Paul. Odd how things work out sometimes.

Just playing a Tele Player for a week now (the model that just replaced Fender's MIM Standard), only my second guitar after an Epi LP. Loving it so far. Still exploring all the tones available, very different than the LP. Most shocking discovery was that a G7 chord that always sounded horribly out of place in one particular song on my LP sounded great on the Tele (several possible reasons for that). I'm also really noticing the responsiveness of my tube amp to how I hit the strings--it seems as if I can control the tone from clean to dirty much more on this guitar. Maybe the LP's humbuckers obscure some of that character? Needless to say "I Walk The Line" sounds great on this one. Very comfortable to hold and am really happy with the sound. Eventually I'll get back to the LP (surely some things like Cinnamon Girl will sound better on the LP) and see how they really compare, but anyway I love this thing so far.

My first guitar was a G&L, ASAT Special, dark blue with white pick guard.... a cool punk axe. I got a few more later:a Baja, a MIM Standard, a Cabronita, an American De Luxe, and more. The latter was the most expensive (1600 US$) and disappointing. It sounded dull. I replaced the N3 pickups with Di Marzio to bring it to life. Still, it is a bit too sophisticated to be a real Tele (contour body, and so on). The best one in my view is the MIM Standard, that came for less than 500 eu. I can get a very good sound out of it - for the music I like. The morale is: the more expensive is not necessarily the better.

Even the LP was rewired and modified to sound more like a Tele tone. His tone is more like the original (pre-dimed Marshall) LP sound think Freddie King. There’s a reason those three Yardbirds guitarists all ended up going back to single coils as their styles needed to evolve beyond one “rawk” tone.

@@HughRogers609 He kind of gave up on Teles for quite some time because a friend ruined his dragon Tele. Doesn't make sense to take Les Paul on tour and then try to make it sound thinner, plus, Teles are much more durable than Les Paul's.

Yes, I have made a bunch of telecasters by hand, and know them intimately, they are wonderful guitars and definitely the "working man's" guitar... I heard that Bob Dylan arrived at a New York recording studio early one snowy winter morning .... he was carrying his tele without it's case and as he walked in, he just banged it on the floor shaking off all the snow....I love the butterscotch color on yours, Vince, I mean Adrian ;) yes I like the new glasses too, are they prescription? Yes, good idea. Just a question of finding the time to do it. I am trying to include a gear section towards the end of each song video, something I've not done in the past.

Good idea Lee. I have started adding a little gear bit towards the end of my recent song videos, but it might also be nice to have that info on my site. Will see what I can do!

Love the opening riff. That would be a great lesson. Nice playing.

The other great thing about Teles is that they seem to be able to take quite a lot of physical abuse, which is good if you're a bit clumsy. Mine's fallen over several times, and even seems to stay in tune after a slight fall. If I even so much as look at my Casino wrong, it goes out of tune.
