@@colbyord Memorial Day 2022 and searching for ‘Decoration Day’ brought me to this video. I’m a huge Jason Isbell and DBT fan. I go to Rams Head all of the time. I was just there for a show Sat night. What I’d give to see Jason at Rams Head. I was out of state in 2010.
After a dozen version and several hundred playcounts it still gets to me. He's played it so long he's surely bored with the standard approach, so he came up with this incredible rhythm and it's almost like a whole new song again. Long live Jason Isbell.
It's funny... since I wrote that first comment, I've been listening to Jason Isbell a lot. I always liked him in DBT but now I am REALLY into him. He could sing this song or any other song underwater and I would still love it. He is truly amazing.
Just gets better and better . . . He destroyed the crowd with this song yesterday at Kaboo Festival in San Diego, Sept. 18, 2016 . . . His band is tight as tight gets, and he and his second guitar went at it hard soloing back and forth, his vocals superb, piercing . . . Write a great song, sing it great, and finger pick it and/or play it electric with leads and slide that blow people back . . . Jason Isbell is a very special breed of cat. Salute!
this performance is my favorite version of this song easily.....I hope there was/is an official recording of the Ram's Head show -- or at least someone with a DAT recorder ;)..
down-up-down-up from low E to G, then keep down-up-down-up back up to the low E. I think of it as a mandolin roll but it does magical things on guitar especially on isbell songs.
