On this week's episode of Punk Rock 101 I break down my songwriting process and give some tips on writing a good pop punk song that will bring you back to the early 2000's with bands like Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Weezer, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Simple Plan, and so many more. So let's write a tune that will bring all of those Warped Tour feels and make you feel like you're hanging at the Hot Topic in the mall. I include everything from writing the lyrics to guitar parts.

Who’s your favorite pop punk band of the early 2000s?!
Simple plan 🤘🏻
@@unstablebean448 one of my favorites too!!! was obsessed with No Pads no Helmets when it came out
A little bit classic but I loved Rancid A LOT in that part of my life!! Good job btw man, I love your vids!
@@mylasthopemusic i LOVE Rancid. And Out Come the Wolves is the best
@@ShakeoutNY Yeah my fav songs is Harry Bridges, but for sure And Out Come The Wolves is the best CD, one of my fav ever period!!
If not Rancid, I loved Sum 41, Green Day, Blink 182, Bowling For Soup, Yellowcard and NoFx of course haha
Still inspired by all of them for my music
Finally someone who explains it so simple😭😭 I’ve been working on a riff for a month now and I couldn’t find the right chords till now 🤘🏽
Glad it helped!!! Would love to hear your song 🤘
Learning the songs from a band you like to get a feel for the song structure/style is a pro-level tip, it will skyrocket your progression like nothing else!
100% agree!
the best tip that few others speak of
Please tell me "punk rock 101" was a reference to bowling for soup. LMAO
oh yes
Love them fr saw the 2 awesome shit
Now I can live out my pop punk dream
The advice to analyze the songs of your favorite musicians is really good!
Recently, every time when I don't know how to develop my idea, I try to determine which band it's most similar in style, after I listen some songs of this band and try to analyze what they consist of, their structure
Often it really helps a lot!
I felt like I was watching a rock band tutorial on the Xbox this was unreal
lmao I dont know if this is good or bad
Dude this is awesome advice, thank you so much!
Man, AJ thanks for the amazingly helpful but entertaining content man! Really inspiring video mate
Lyndon!!! Really glad the video helped!!! Makes me very happy
Ahh thank you I’ve been working & writing on pop punk songs, & I used to be really trash at writing pop punk songs due to the fact I hadn’t written any to the genre but now I know what to do
been trying to work on this song for 3 months now and I can finally spice it up lmao thanks sm
heck yes!!! send it y way when it's done! would love to hear it

Really glad Giulio!!
Jazz musician wanting to branch out to other genres out of boredom, thanks for the information on this!

I just listened to 914 yesterday when I was scrolling Instagram, but dude, what a great content, keep up the good work🤘🏻🤘🏻
Angel thank you so much for the kind words!! Really glad you like the music and videos. Hope you have an awesome day
This was so damn helpful. Thank you :)
Of course!!! Glad it helped
Dude this is a fantastic breakdown
Hey thanks!!! Full song is out everywhere if ya wanna check it out 🤘
Thanks!
as much as I love 2000s pop punk, I really want to learn how to approach writing songs like the story so far, neck deep, the wonder years, bands like that. If you could release it, that would be awesome!
Good job man , you’re very cool and talented
Cheers dude! Goad you enjoyed
thanks so much man
Happy to help!
I FEEL you! hahaha
Oh I know you get it 😂🤘
Feeling called out lol I did learn the entire American Idiot album when it first dropped. Both guitar and bass 🤣🤣 Still know Jesus of Suburbia by heart on bass cuz yeah! 🤘
The speedrun chorus holds up surprisingly well. I just listened to Letterbomb, and they get to a wordless chorus at 35 seconds as part of the buildup, and then the lyrics for the first verse start at 46 seconds
Awesome, subbed 🤙🏼
Cheers!! Glad you enjoyed
great
🤘
hey man I really like your video! I think they would blow up sooner if you switch between the Daw view and the camera view as the main focus so people are more engaged with the video. Keep it up!
appreciate the advice!
Tips on recording and mixing 2005 pop punk drums and vocals?
Thanks a lot for making this video,I really like it.I am a big Linkinpark fan and GreenDay fan in China, and I am a 3 chords and 5 chords guitar player hhhh.So I allready write some poppunk songs(I want to mix the greenday style and my own) befor I watch this video, and I used the almost same way to wiite songs just like you.And now I know I maybe havet to Consider delete some part or chords.Anyway,I learn a lot from this video, keep moving man!
And I also wanna know how do we singing or mixing just like poppunk or Green day? Thanks~
Keep it up!! Thanks for watching. I would watch some mix tutorials on here. They would do a better job explaining than I can in this comment honestly. Keep writing great tunes 🤘
I'm looking at this because I want to play the guitar and sing. I have tiny hands, but I believe I can do it.
that intro scared the shit out of me
using this for a school project. wish me luck
YOU GOT THIS
My stan list bcs I’m cool:
Avril Lavigne
Flyleaf
The Pretty Reckless
Sum 41
Simple Plan
It's also fun to start with the chorus acapella which has the title of the song and is the part that the crowd eventually sings all by themselves before you repeat the chorus once more resolving in a thunderous seemingly neverending outro like you're Metallica or something
- No "This next song is called..." introduction needed because the title of the song is immediately recognized by the fans who start cheering
- Now they can't wait until the chorus comes by again so they can sing along
- By letting the crowd take over just before the last time you repeat the chorus again they get a sense of unity and belonging like they're part of the band and not just an observer
- Stretched out climactic outro with lots of guitar stunts while everyone cheers "Yay I can't wait to tell my grandkids I was here!"
I heard Dave Grohl mention how Aerosmith starts a lot of songs with the chorus/songtitle and I realized I never did that for some reason 🤷🏼♂️ and the Toy Dolls taught me how important it is to get a crowd going and made me realize I'd rather have a humorous than a serious approach to song topics and lyrics
I'll never be good enough to take myself seriously as a musician anyway and all I really want is for everyone just to have a good time
So did you reuse the first hook as your chorus? I didn’t hear you talk about what exactly you played for the chorus.
What program is used in this video?
Im having trouble with writing lyrics to it, I keep catching the beat instead of using my voice as an instrument
TABS-TABS-TABS FOR ALL YOU YOUNG GUNS
GOTTA HAVE THE TABS
Sad you didn’t mention the iconic Bionicles and All-American Rejects collab for 2005
Which guitar & what processing you using man ?
I use a few different guitars. This is a Fender Telecaster Nashville Player Plus. I use a Line 6 Helix for a lot of my tone.
where is that hoodie from
My website!!! shakeoutny.com
Plug in?
You added the Fat Lip Riff with the In Too Deep gif just to trigger us, didn't you?
Well it worked! Hope you're happy! Lmao!
On a serious note, thank you so much for this video! Really helped out.
haha always. Glad it helped!
I want to write a song that sounds like something Matt skiba would write
A capo on electric!? HERESY!
It’s pretty common to do 😂
Lyrics?
I'm in love with this fkn channel oh my god
Hey thanks!!! Let me know what you want to see more of 🤘
I don’t know music theory so i have no idea how to even make a riff to start with let alone the chords beneath it
start by learning a lot of songs and gaining inspiration from stuff you like
@@ShakeoutNY ive started learning some blink songs, i want to create riffs like Tom Delonge does, thanks for the tips tho
@@ervin9720 for sure! just learn some more Blink and you'll get some ideas!
My Favoriten are Green Day and Simple Plan, but i Thinge you forgot Avril Lavigne
Is that a tele?
Yep!
Problem #1 i can't play guitar and have no dexterity in my fingers due to dyspraxia 😂
i find it interesting that the series is called Punk rock 101 becuase thats a song by bowling for soup HA LOL
a GREAT song
@@ShakeoutNY IKR 🤪
ironically in 2005 almost none of the techniques used for writting the song in the vid were available.
No way that’s how I write lyrics too, I always thought that real musicians don’t do this
Heck yeah!!! Its a great way tonget ideas out
Deryck whimbley
Kinda sounds like the friends tv show theme song 😝
I wish I could write a song as good as that hahaha
Haha that was a pretty classic song 🤣
Istg if I can’t write a song like flyleaf, I will loose it… I love the song “Red Sam” (they are a Christian rock band apparently but I’m not Christian)
1:44 does anybody know the name to that song 💀
the Anthem by Good Charlotte!
@@ShakeoutNY thank u sm fr fr
Nah bro, I learned Dookie all the way through. American Idiots for chumps. ( Love the video BTW. )
Oh trust me, I learned that too 😂
im actually offended that some people consider these bands a phase. A lot of those bands are my life and im 35 year old paramedic with a family lol
Best punk band of any era? NOFX
No..pennywise
70% of songs I can play are green day lol
It’s stupid contagious to be broke and famous can someone please save us from punk rock 101- bowling for soup
You know it
RIP headphone users
If you didn't start singing Punk Rock 101 at the title, get out
😂😂😂
It's stupid, contagious; to be broke and famous. Can someone please save us from punk rock 101?
