I was told I didn't have the money to ride horses when I was younger. I did. Where there's a will there's a way. I did though College. Now, a Re-Rider. 20 years after. Trying to get back to where I was. Keep going. Keep riding. Keep studying. Lucky you have a Mom who is behind you. I did it all by myself. I think she came to one show. No internet bullies then. That was a good thing. Your seat is awesome. Your method is really very thoughtful and kind. You live the life I wanted to. I'm thrilled to be able to just ride my friend's horses. It's a gift that I cherish. I love your videos. Keep going and just keep going.♥️
I love that since your start you have not gotten stuck in one realm. I think that was one thing that helped me. From hunter/ jumper to breed shows to thoroughbred/Standardbreds to young to troubled horses englishto western to driving to galloper to jogger to dressage. That is what makes a great trainer and one that can truly help a horse because you have had more opportunities to hands on work with many horses and experience problems. Keep doing what you do you have a good head on your shoulders. Love seeing your transitions. It made me think back to the days when I didn’t need bits and such. It was neat seeing you change. I also know your love of thoroughbreds, most don’t know that of me. Most people I feel don’t know how wonderful they can be. There were so many when I worked at the race farm I wish I could of taken to work with for their new life’s after racing. Can’t wait to see more of what’s to come for you. It’s an adventure that captures your heart and soul when you work with horses. Also had to add, I used to fall asleep on my bouncer horse when I was young and loved them since I can remember also. It’s like we are born with it.
I got started at 4 with a little miniature stallion! Parents thought that'd be a good idea. Since 16, I stopped riding since my old boy passed and my mental health got worse. I wish I could pick it back up. My favorite horses are draft breeds and one day I hope to have one since my small draft breed has been so hard to work with but so rewarding. Since 2012, I've been teaching young riders how to respectfully and responsibly handle, ride, and care for horses. Nothing on the scale that you're doing your work, but everyone has to start somewhere!
Shelby! u r an incredible person! u had me laughing and crying watching ur story. im 52yrs old and feel like im 16 and u have been so inspirational to me watching ur vids! ive been riding and training for 20+yrs and I want so much to be inspired and uve done that for this old lady! ty ty ty
I am a Florida CowGirl started at 2yoa. dabbled and loved English CC and Gymkhana~ But Western is my life. My Best Cowhorses are always OTTB 💕 Currently I have 2 Rescues and really appreciate your experiences. So happy to find your channel! Go Shelby!
I’ve been thinking about what profession I want to go into and was starting to close the door on training but I think this video may have given me hope!
Wow! What an amazing video! I truly appreciate brutal honesty! I’m so glad you were able to keep your horse through that horrible financial, and apparently criminal, situation. It would have been an even greater crime to have lost something you are obviously passionate about and have devoted your life to!
Shelby is just the best, she's been through a lot but has come out of it so experienced and amazing. I hope to be at least a quarter of what she is when I grow up.
A great video, Shelby! You are blessed you had the opportunity to ride at such a young age. 💖 I didn't start until I was well into adulthood. I love your videos and you are very talented!
You are a huge inspiration and a great role model for younger and older riders, we can all aspire to be as dedicated and hardworking as you Shelby. You are an amazing rider and trainer, May 2019 bring many marvelous opportunities your way.
You are so underrated. Absolutely amazing, you’ve really inspired me a lot regarding horses since 2016 or so and I honestly appreciate it. I used to blindly follow what past trainers have taught me, and I heavily relied on internet trainers. Upon finding you, Ive been more encouraged to do my own research and develop my own opinions and beliefs. You sparked my interest in animal behavior again talking about your love for training and it honestly means a lot, as I have been very confused and insecure about any future plans. I hope your account and knowledge continues to grow so you can reach more people like you did me ❤️ cant wait to see what 2019 brings
This is a good example to people looking to get into any job field.. hard work and kindness will pay off! Don’t give up on your passion! Hats off to you Shelby, you honestly have done a wonderful job 👏👏👏
Im a aussie cowgirl and i started riding when i was 1,But i got led around when i was 1 and then i got my first horse when i was 4 your such a inspiring youtuber! Love u
You probably get told this all the time, but you are a rare and gifted 'true' horsewoman, and it is SO cool to watch you grow and ride and train horses! Thank you for posting all of these videos and documenting this journey! It was always my dream to rescue horses, and train them to be 'useful' so they may hopefully never find themselves in an auction situation again, giving the horse a skillset=saves their life. But as life went on, money and time became more and more tight with kids, careers, marriage etc, so when there's someone as dedicated and talented as you out there with the option to assist in her journey to rescue horses via purchasing merch or paypal donations, its the perfect opportunity to help and get your dream (with the same end result as my dream!) off the ground! Makes me wonder how many others are out there who want to help horses or have big dreams to open a foundation etc, and just dont reach out to the community effectively. Amazing riding story, so inspiring!
You inspire me so much. I'm so glad I have someone who's genuinely a great rider and person, to look up to. I am so proud of your accomplishments. I hope 2019 will be a great year for you, as it is already for me.
I think I have been following you for over a year now and you really have come a long way Shelby! You have grown so much in the year 2018, especially with Milo. He is looking better than ever! I am so happy for you and your success, it is very well deserved!
i am 10 now and have only been riding for about a year now, we have gotten really close to my trainer and i am going to start working. i wont be doing much but i will be leading ponies on pony rides, helping out by feeding the horse and ya know stuff like that, i really hope that i get a horse of my own some day i really love riding
Great video Shelby, thanks for sharing your story. I got a little teary at the beginning, as I started out the same way as you. Sadly life got in the way. Hope to get the ponies back in my life in the next few years.
Whoa... absolutely shook right now! I now remember the really old Facebook days of us all having out names as our name and our horses name!!! I remember Farley and Dallas from way back then! So shocked to have come across this video and remember the good old days!
I started riding at 12 and really started riding at 13-14. I got my first horse 5 months ago and he has been such a learning experience. He's taught me *alot* about behavior, training, and bonding with horses. My gelding is a 16hh 21 y/o Draft×Standardbred and gaited. He paces and my trainer was doubtful we could ever compete in dressage but here we are! A lot of sleepless nights, crying, friction in the bond, and frustration later and we're doing dressage clinics. The clinic trainer is very supportive! My hope is to train my gelding enough to be a safe ride for my mom and then get a project horse. I won't be able to sell my gelding(i made a deal with the previous owner to retire him back to her) so Ill need some way to get the money to buy a more permanent horse. I want to get either an OTTB or a young rescue. That or my trainer has a trakehner stud colt that I've had my eye on for a year now. I love him. Im hoping she'll be willing to sell to me but he's currently not available. Im hoping Ill be able to be apart of his breaking and training next year. He's only turning 2 this year so there's still time!
Your story is very inspiring and always a dream to watch. I fell in love with racehorses when I was 17 and still love them. I worked with harness racing horses (Standardbreds and French trotters) and they are amazing. They are so intelligent but they are a lot harder to start under saddle as they are used to pull with the front legs instead of pushing with the hind legs. But they always try to give me the world.
ok i’ll just say this i’m only 12, but i’m not a green rider and i have been around horses my whole life and i’m a hunter jumper. With that said i love taking on ottb horses and i train them for hunters..people say i’m way to young and ill “Get hurt” riding them since ottb horses are stereotyped as hot headed and dangerous.. Shelby your journey with green horses have encouraged me to keep going with my ottb horses, so thank you for keeping me going despite what everyone says
