I borrowed this game when it came out. I didn't quite get everything, and only ever finished both campaigns a decade later, with the help of guides. It gets a lot better once you figure out how missions work, how special forces must support characters, etc. I liked a lot of the concepts. The way heroes work, and the way plot elements from the OT are integrated, with different possibilities of how they will play out. I liked the space battles in theory, but in practice they're a bit janky, and for some reason I rarely actually ended up in a big, decisive battle.
That's sums it up nicely: it was crazy complicated... Then it gets better after you learn the game. Great concepts, but after you've played for a while the gameplay gets kinda stale.
I bought this when it came out. I didn't find it very difficult, but that's probably because I just colonized the entire galaxy. Eventually you're just smashing through each sector with a gargantuan fleet and the actual game objectives fall into place
Did you ever hear of the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.
@@Tiberius_Gracchus7 Have I heard? Have YOU heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?! ... I dramatically reenact the scene for the wife every time I (or someone else says) "Have I ever told you..."
You’re right about the Ven Diagram, and I believe you could add 4X (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) to it. There is a few I love and would recommend if you’re interested. Shogun: Total War (2000) Turn Based, overhead map style view, with the ability to auto resolve battles, or you can take command in a 3D landscape. I’m currently playing Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts and loving it. Also turn based, you can kit out your ships within the set limitations, invade other countries, form alliances with others, and battle in 3D or auto resolve.
@@Aaron-Oakleaf I've heard of Shogun, and I think I would like that game... I'd be bad at it, But I would enjoy playing it. Ultimate admiral: dreadnoughts... Have not heard about this one, does it have "realistic" naval warfare, So like is it inspired by actual ships... And is it supposed to appeal to people that are like navy buffs? 4X... Is that the game name? Or is the game name "explore expand exploit exterminate", either way that's an excellent name for a strategy game. Lol Thanks for the suggestions, I'll add 'em to my steam wishlist!
@@Atratzu Shogun is great, and I really enjoy the inclusion of some mission specific in-game cinematics, such as when you send a Ninja or Geisha to attempt to kill someone. They're fun and the last few seconds plays out differently depending on the success/failure of the mission. Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts has been a delight and made me realize what I loved so much about Star Wars as a kid, the World War II (in space) aspect of the movies. So it's only natural I loved that part of Star Wars Rebellion. Its much more technical and complex, in its ship customization, but the ship on ship combat is excellent. 4X is just a game genre. Even tho it has mixed reviews, give it a chance. I'm assuming it's mixed reviews for various reasons, but if you liked SW:R and how it didn't hold your hand, you'll like this one too, it certainly wont either, lol.

@@CaesarSneezy Good question, I think it's probably going to require some emulation of old Windows 95 software. There are tutorials online to fix it, But as always I am hesitant to download something to fix a game unless absolutely necessary. It further complicates my review too, because then I need to advise everyone else to go to the website and download the thing I did, and what if it doesn't work for anybody else? So that's always the dilemma... Unless the video is specifically about modifying the game in some way.
@@Midala87 Yes and No. Quite frankly, I can't really remember how empires at war played... I remember it being more of an RTS and less of a grand strategy game. Meanwhile I'll never forget civilization gameplay... But your right, that comparison would have made more sense. Sorry...
I jumped to that conclusion early into the video. I understand your reasoning for not using the fix-it. It’s too bad tho. You hit the nail on the head, there is two aspects to the game, the galactic view screen, and the tactical combat screen. The base game is fun enough. Personally, I love to build a purpose made fleet so I can take direct command of it in RTS strategy. I love building up a fleet that nearly matches the enemy fleet, pound got pound for the 3D battles. Once they clash, using my superior strategeryness to out wit the enemy 🤓 At first it’s great, but eventually gets kinda boring if you completely out-gun, and therefore steamroll the computer, once you’re proficient at the game.
@@Aaron-Oakleaf I always view modding a game an excuse to go back someday for a new and fresh experience... But also I want to review the game as it is... Unless I can't really play it (like what I had to do with Delta Force 1, where I couldn't really play it without downloading a few files) I started smiling when you described building out a fleet to match the computers fleet and winning with superior tactics. I totally would have done that if I had played this as a kid. But as an adult I quickly out gunned the other side and the only thing keeping me from relaxing towards the end was the fear the computer was building a Death Star.
@@AtratzuThat’s fair. Wanting to play a game from a purity standpoint is something important to me, as well. If I’ve interpreted you correctly. I have tried multiple times to allow the Empire PC to build a Death Star. So much as to let them take the entire outer rim (on Large Galaxy setting) and half of the core worlds. At most they’ll just have multiple super Star destroyers and supporting ships/fighters. I’m not sure why this is. Perhaps some code prevents the computer to invest resources into it. I’ve built one on nearly half of my play thrus, mostly for the fun of it. It has more drawbacks than utility, and is only really useful to end the game quickly when you bring it to the Rebel base. Using it to destroy any planet anywhere will cause the entire galaxy to begin to side with the rebels. So maybe that’s why they won’t?
Yep, you've interpreted correctly. Haha And interesting, I wonder why that would be... I guess if there are more disadvantages to having a death star, I can't blame em. ... Kinda thought you could just nuke the Galaxy and be done with it. Lol
