At the early 70s, we just moved. We started 5 months packing. We numbered each box and put what room that box went to.
I took a spiral notebook and listed all the contents of each box, noting the place where we took it from. It took us about 3 weeks to unpack everything.
The notebook was our manual, and it was amazing how quick it went. God bless you and hubby. God will open a door for you. Remember to follow peace.

Darlene, whenever the Lord leads you to your new home, pack a couple of suitcases as if you're spending a week on vacation. Pack all your essentials and meds for you two so that the first week in your new but unpacked home will be easier to settle in to. Also, a large bin with linens and towels. This makes finding what you need easier so you can get on with your day of unpacking and settling in. It's also a good idea to pack a bin with a few kitchen items as if you're going camping so as to make simple meal preps easier with your favorite coffee cups etc. The Lord already has what's for you set aside to be given to you in His perfect timing. I'll keep you in my prayers. 🙏🏼🏡--Virginia in NYC

We left our home of 20 years and moved an hour East, literally “back home” for both of us.
That move and selling our home was one of my hardest tasks . That house held memories of our children from ages 2 and 4, they were both in college when we moved. Many days I’d wake up gulping back tears from a memory that laid on my heart. We went from a 4000+ sq. Ft home to this one that is 2500sq ft. That was a shock I have yet to recover from. The housing market was and still is horrendous in this area.
What got me through it all is our belief that God puts you were He needs you.
These crazy political times and nasty weather episodes in mind. Budget a whole house generator, if one is not already installed. We are now just in our late 60’s and early 70’s and it is a blessing that my husband is so relieved with the security it offers.

We are in our mid 70's and in the process of building a home to fit our changing needs, stairs...gone are any steps. That means going from 3 floors to only one. Stairs for us are a thing of the past. As our mobility changes, so do our needs for living on one floor. Secondly something I did that I will never regret is TYPING on the computer the contents of each box. By typing it on the computer, I could specify how many labels per each box, usually 5 (top, 3-4 sides). Then, by adhering them to all sides of the box, all sides would be covered. I ALSO would type if the contents were fragile in large, underlined letters. I agree, large packing boxes are unwieldy and can get too heavy. For comforters, sheets, and bath towels, I just put into clean, heavy duty trash bags, also labeling on several sides in case you need to stack them. These are just a few starters. Put God in control, asking Him to guide you and supply your needs. At our age, changes are hard.😅

We are in our 70s, and my "babies" are in their 40s. We all grew up in Southern California but suddenly God changed our lives. The Grandfather's died all in one year. The kids moved out (the youngest to the Navy) the Grandmother's became ill and both passed. We even lost all but one pet. My husband was encouraged to retire and I finally lost my job.
We couldn't afford to stay in California moving was our only option but like you we had no idea to where.
Then I remembered a promise my youngest son made when he was 5, "don't worry mama I'll take care of you and Daddy "
He was out of the Navy with a wonderful girl from Ohio who was also from the Navy and they married. We all moved to Michigan and we are now in a mother in law suite on a 15 acre farm with our family and grandchildren near good medical and lots of love.
God will take care of you just lean on Him.
    Bless you both 🙏🏿
    Kathleen.

My number one recommendation is to find a one level home. Not one level with a garage underneath. Strictly one level. As you get older, it will get more and more difficult to get groceries and such up those stairs! I would also recommend a home that does not have really high ceilings. Changing lightbulbs and AC filters becomes a challenge as climbing ladders gets more risky!

Find a home with at least ONE bedroom on the main floor and your washer/dryer on the main floor. It will make your twilight years much SAFER not to have to go up and down steps umpteen times a day. Just my 2 cents. Your realtor can advise you which route to go on selling. Let them tell you what's best for your situation. They will guide you along the right path. Best of luck! ❤

When we made or final move, we took a couple of may be anywhere between 3-5 day trips to different areas. Road through towns looked around. Looked at realty ads. talked to realtors. They took us around and showed us different areas. We would go home and talk. Hit another area. Did that for a few months. When we found the area we wanted, called the realtor and told her to book some showings.

Look for your house now if you can ,don’t wait til you sell.
A pool is a must because it provides in my opinion enjoyment but most important low impact exercise. So I consider that top of the list.
And you said it correctly look for a house that has what you want and with the least things that you need to add , update or fix.

We have a smaller ranch style home but would love to have a little bigger home. One that had more storage than what we have, but how I would dread moving at 69 years old. We have lived in our house for 45 years. I don’t see you having any problem selling your home but I know you need a place to go. God will give you strength and I know he will guide you through. 🙏😊♥️

Even though almost all my family from there is gone, that’s where I’d go. Now, if I struck it rich, I’d buy a house in Bedford & one in The Villages, FL! ❤

I know exactly how you’re feeling and the stress you’re enduring. Just trying to declutter and reduce 23 years of ‘stuff’ down to something manageable has been overwhelming. We’re 62 and have been earnestly looking for a new home for the last 10 months! We’ve looked at 15 homes in person and about 2 dozen virtually! Have bid on a couple but were outbid. So discouraging but we keep praying and hoping. We started out with a lower budget, planning to take on some rehab projects. But the more we looked and found out how much rehab an older, less expensive home would require, we reevaluated how much time we wanted to spend working on a home in order to live in it, as opposed to increasing our budget upfront to get a home that required less work so we could enjoy more time just living in it. Here in MN home prices are still pretty high and competition fierce. I hope you all can find just what you’re looking for - in a much shorter time! Wishing you the best!

The house looks really really good. do you have a trailer or rv that you guys could drive around & stay in different places until you guys get that feeling that this is the place. My husband & I like many places but he always said to me, you need to live there for at least a month before you make a final decision & he is right. He passed away 5 years ago & I have yet to move. Too many memories & truly dont know where to go. I find some place & really like & so I go stay awhile & before it’s 3 weeks I know this is not the place so I just keep trying different places, still haven’t found a better place than home yet. I have done some major de-cluttering & continue to de clutter. That feels amazing. So my advice is go on adventure together, check everything out. It will be fun. Everything you keep can go into storage until you find your forever home. God bless you guys sending you good vibes 😎

Darlene…as you know, Butch and I moved last Oct. to be closer to our children. We did not put our old house on the market until we had moved to the new home. We lived in our old home for 41 years and it was a town of about 1000 people. We decided to move to a larger town with doctors and more conveniences. We actually got a bigger home due to the children and grandchildren coming to visit now that we’re closer. We did not know a soul here and the hardest part was going to a new church after all these years. I ABSOLUTELY love our new home, neighbors, church and stores etc. Butch plays golf and the course is across the street. That was his main goal! There are so many opportunities with us living in a college town. We have been coming here with our season football tickets for 29 years. I couldn’t ask for more. The children are tickled we’re closer and they’ve enjoyed coming to football games and tailgating for many years with us. Our daughter and her family are 3 1/2 hours away and our son and his family are just 1 1/2 hours away. The Lord has been so good to us…I feel sorry for others who are not as blessed. You will get through this and think of the positive possibilities just around the bend!!❤

I don't have all the answers. The hardest thing is making up my mind. Once that's done, everything is smooth sailing. My "wants" are so varied, it makes things all the more confusing. HA! Like you, the move for us can be, literally, anywhere. Perhaps, I tell myself, this does not have to be the last place I go. Maybe, rent a home for a little while in an area of interest. How about vacationing in a travel trailer for a time? Please try not to be upset. It's going to be a fantastic adventure!

@@Souperat60 Hello Darlene!, Yes, perhaps another move. There's a story behind it, of course. In 2004 we built a custom home on just over 6 acres on my husband's family's farm where others in the family were building, too. After an accident concerning my neck in 2010, then severe lower spinal problems occurred, my health got so bad that I could no long take care of things there. In addition, at that time, it was looking as if I might eventually end up in a wheelchair. So in 2018 we simply had to sell. We purchased a home in a small neighborhood, on 1/2 an acre. It was too smothering for my farmgirl heart and far too small of a property, but at the time, it seemed like the thing to do. But as God would have it, just before this last Christmas, I had a total reconstruction on my lower spine. Even then, no one was sure how this would play itself out. To date, I'm a walking miracle. Who knows just how long this will last? I'm voting for forever! haha This is my opportunity to get a bit larger property, perhaps in a place more suiting my personality...and live the rest of my days doing all the things I love best-est! I just turned 66 and there's no time like the present to live the dream. I'm hoping the same for you. Then 2 yrs after moving here I was diagnosed with a dibilitating illness. The weather here is hard on me due to heat and humidity. I'm now disabled and would love to move north to cooler temps but physically unable to pack a house. Hubby no help, his suggestion is toss everything! 😮 😂 Financially that iss ridiculous. My recommendation if it's to be your last move a ranch style home without stairs. You definitely want a view! We're 10 minutes from a very beautiful beach but I haven't been able to go for about 10 years due to health. Though we live on small spring fed lake, hubby doesn't maintain brush which obstructs view 😢

It’s plain to see that this move has you so very stressed. I guess I missed a video where you explain why you want to move from your current area. Is it too metropolitan and busy for you? Whatever the reasons, I strongly suggest you consider moving near at least one of your children. As you age, your kids will have a much easier time if they can get to you quickly. I live 2.5 hours from my childhood home, and after mom passed away, it wasn’t long before Dad began going downhill. I was still working, and it was exhausting trying to get to his house often enough and still keep my job. Being in the same town would have made that phase of life so much less stressful. So that’s a perspective from your kids’ point of view.
When you think about it, you can still travel to these fun areas where you’re considering moving to. The cost of living may be sky high in those places. Small towns can be a great place to put down roots, and the land isn’t as expensive.
As others have mentioned, spend time in prayer, asking the Lord for patience and for guidance. People you know may mention something that will give you the spark to ignite your decision. Be still, and listen to Him………🙏✝️
    ❤️-Brenda

First make sure you get 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms as retired couple., then kitcken , livingroom, laundryroom, yard, storage, and pool if possibe.. Florida is a good place for retired elderly people. Alot of retired elder couple end up selling after a year because they did not get 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.!!!! You will need an extra bedroom and bathroom for if you want to sleep separately or for guest visiting, something to think about!!!!

First, be still and wait for God. Second, are you still grieving? If so, that is making this much harder than it needs to be. Perhaps stay there and enjoy the beautiful updates and renovations you have done? My advice - do not put your home on the market until you have found a new home to be excited about. I may be wrong but I have the feeling you are being pressured by someone to hurry. About moving - we are 61, moved to a 3 bedroom one level townhome when we were 55. Best decision we've ever made but it was in the making for 5 years. Be still and wait for God.

Hi Darlene, your home looks beautiful... thank you for the little tour, it is such a shame that you are moving. Are you moving because you are downsizing, and need a smaller house? As for location of a potential new home is there somewhere in your area that you like, as I imagine it would be less stressful? If you are wanting to leave the area for good maybe you and Lou could move somewhere closer to your family! Could your family check out homes available in their area and make out a list for you? Whatever you both decide will be right, and I am sure that God will guide you in all your decisions. Please know that I have added you and Lou to my prayers.
God's blessings, love and hugs. Gloria 🤗🙏🌻❤

All the memories you can take in your heart. New memories will c ome to go with them, Everything else is just material things. Lean on Jesus to give you guidance Really in your heart and you mind give him the control to lead you where to go. He will never steer you wrong. We moved almost 2 hours away from where I was born and lived all my life two years ago, I don't know anyone here . Having to find new stores to shop for food was the hardest part for me. THere is no Lidl or Aldi here can you imagine. I have to drive over an hour to get to Aldi and the closes Lidl is back home. I do take cooler every time we go and visit my mom. I think she is what I miss the most. She is 85 and my best friend. I do talk to her everyday. I do go back from time to time just to go to church with her on Sundays. That is the hardest part for me is finding a Church family, I miss mine so badly. We have been here like I said going on two years and I still have not found that Church family Pray God will guide me in the right way also,Be blessed my Dear friend, I love you and remember Jesus loves you too

Make sure you get a two bedroom and two batheroom. Alot of of older retired people regrate that they did not get 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom as a priorty then a kitchen , livingroom, laundryroom, garage , yard and a pool if possible. Make sure 2 bedroom and 2 full bathroom first because alot of older people end up selling as soon as they move in.

I think we find that we wait until we retire to make these moves, not thinking about our ages. I wish I had made the move when I was younger because now it is way too much work and questions. Every time we begin to think about making the move it goes by the wayside really quick. Realtors will come in my home to assess the value and immediately instruct me to downsize the entire house. Ha-ha Less is more is their words I believe. My thoughts are that a buyer needs to look beyond the box and make it their own. Oh well once again the idea of moving has been shelved for us. Fix the house exactly how I want it and live happily ever after.

I'm so glad to see you back on RUclips! I've been praying for you guys because moving is a difficult thing to accomplish but it's also exciting, if you let it be. Wouldn't it be nice to live close to your kids? That's one of my biggest blessings. I will continue to pray for God's guidance in relocating. Retirement is also a blessing! My precious husband moved to Heaven when he was 54 years old. Our plans for retirement never came to fruition. I retired on my own but you'll have Lou to be with you. Another blessing!!

Well from a retirement stand point, South Carolina or Tennessee would be great as not taxing your retirement. Both are beautiful states.

Please be prepared for how your dog will react. Remember, the dog too is leaving everything as well. Some dogs become clingy, afraid you will leave. Some whine, stop eating, and yes, they can act depressed, sometimes their eyes get red, glassy, and watery (sp). If I remember correctly, your son is a vet. Please ask him. But, remember, all pets can react differently.
I just moved recently. I used sml boxes because I thought I'd move all but the big things. Keep in mind, sml and medium boxes mean more trips back and forth for the movers as well. So, if you're doing most of the moving of boxes, get a dolly or flat bed to stack boxes on (one with a handle on each end) - it goes faster. If you use a moving company, ask them. They are used to moving big boxes and prefer it (some) because a lot of boxes again mean more trips. I'm 69 yrs old, with no family, and my friends are my age, so most of the packing was done by me. Moving all those sml boxes darn near killed me, but here I am. My best for you and your husband. DJ

I loved this video. Just a great conversation. A good tip is when you are finally ready to have people come look at the house have a pot roast on the stove or in the oven. It is all about visualization. If people can see themselves living in the house it will sell much faster. When my mom sold our house in 2002, it sold in 3 days. She was expecting at least 3 weeks. As far as where to move, are you going to stay in the state of VA? Maybe you could start a new series - Lou and Darlene on the road. Take us along to some of the places you are thinking of and get others opinions.

Just wondered, what about having a home built to your needs and specifications? That way you have the best of both worlds....once you find land 😊. Just think, an attached garage, screened in porch, swimming pool, kitchen, etc. Just a thought from someone who cares for you. Keep us all informed. Look up to our Maker as He loves us and cares also.

We moved back after 14 years to be close to our children. We had been living in southern Utah and decided to move back to SLC. Best decision we made. I don’t know where your children live, but consider them and the area you decide to move to.

    Hi Darlene:
When I moved cross country from Boston to Arizona I researched for 5 years until I was able to make that move. Then we rented while looking for a house which helped us figure out where in the state we wanted to be and now 4 years later due to the covid we finally bought our home which is the last home for me. If you are planning on retiring where you go you must be sure that is where you want to be. You do not sound so sure, think about it.
