Clay - I've done the same colorization to mine for 30+ years however I use Testor's Model Enamel paint (in the small 1 oz bottles) and use Zippo lighter fluid to wipe the excess off about 2 minute after application. The lighter fluid does not really remove any paint that is in the engraving and there is no need to use a razor which could scratch the Chrome. Try it! Plus... the Testor's is extremely durable - lasts for many many years and there are a plethora of colors to choose from. Hint - use a wooden toothpick to apply - much neater than a brush.
You can also use a calligraphy pen to fill it in using capillary. It's the same thing as filling panel lines on a model with panel liner (really thinned out enamel paint)
today got a couple of tool from my matco dealer he is so cool and when I first started he was the only one that came to me introduced himself and helped me out with what I needed
Yeah, you find one of those every now and then. They're a freak of nature, but they can be good people to know. I had a Snap-on guy like that when I lived in Denver.
I just spray a rattle can into a cup and use a q tip to apply the markings then wipe off the excess with some denatured alcohol before the paint fully cures.
Yeah I've done something similar with my dark impacts that are just stamped and you can't see what's going on I've painted all of those green so I can tell what freaking size they are
That's a great idea. I'm a fan of using a wash bottle and acetone or lacquer thinner to clean off tools, but lately I started using citrus cleaner for the same job, so maybe it'll resist taking the paint off quickly. Only one way to find out.
Try a lacquer stick one of these days, You basically use it like a crayon over what your trying to fill and just wipe away the excess, works great if your trying to do a whole socket set 🤘🤘
A couple years ago SK released the LP90 series, and they had green selector switches. It was cool looking, and I wanted to take them off my Snap-on ratchets and anodize them. I'm gonna have to revisit that and paint some too. I'm thinking red, white and blue!
While the paint is still a bit tacky, you can take a piece of thin cloth (like a bed sheet) wrapped over the end of a credit card or other think rigid material, and squeegee away the paint on the surface. If needed, a little bit of brake cleaner/lighter fluid/acetone/denatured alcohol/etc. can be used on the cloth. The credit card keeps the cloth taught so it won't go into the depressions.
Cool! i got lucky and found a 9/16 snap on wrench with it colored in like this a week ago in a old chevy truck. thought i might do this to my other wrenches too.
Aye, that's the rub; how do you know when to stop painting in the recesses on all of your tools. Once you get started, you may not be able to stop. I've decided to just leave mine in chrome. The paint will eventually be removed over time, and then you have to re-do it and....no, thanks.
If that's one of those near needle point tips, its a tiny piece of stainless rod that acts like a plunger instead of the ball in a ballpoint pin. I'm worried it may have scratched your chrome. if you ever remove the paint give us an update please!
@@KoonTrucking not necessarily. I guess if their getting banged around alot... I'm a woodworker, only been sticking chrome into engine compartments for about a 3 months, maybe that's not enough time to get a scratch or perhaps am just spastic?
@@scottie26169 Yes. I just fill in the engraved lines with polish and wipe it off. You can use whatever cleaner on tools. I use clp or ballistol to wipe the excess off guns.
Thank you Clay. Great idea. I am thinking about doing this with my sockets with white and yellow to make the sizes easier to see. I am using old Snap On ratchets and want to upgrade to locking flex heads with soft grip handles. I have a couple with quick release. I don't remember hearing you discuss using the quick release. Do you like those? I know the anvil might be more likely to break but it is nice not having to fight oily sockets. I looked at your ratchet comparison video...is the Matco BRF128LFM still your favorite?
I've seen people do this before and you know if there was some way to get into each letter and number and indentions and lightly Scuff the surface of the Chrome to hold the paint better for longer that would pretty cool as well...

Iv done this before with my pistols. I would use my wife's nail paint. Never thought about doing it to my tools lol

My brother Clay you are a new true OG and love your tools and mark them like us old dudes do sometimes!LEGEND!
My ratchets got filled in on their own with black grease over time lol
Probably for a different use but watching you use the razor reminded me of the bazillion pack of "miniscraper" plastic razor blades sitting in my box.
I just spray a rattle can into a cup and use a q tip to apply the markings then wipe off the excess with some denatured alcohol before the paint fully cures.

Just did this to my 3/8 set and they look amazing!!! Thank you for the inspiration.
Yep that helps make your ratchet personalized to your liking and identification. Thanks for sharing.
I use testers model paint. Once it’s dry I hit it with a little automotive clear coat.

And you don’t gotta wait for it to dry
Well I'll be customizing for awhile cause I'm also a ratchet addicted 🤪, thanks for the video Clay 👍

How did I miss this.....i know what im doing tomorrow

Been doing this on anything rollmarked with testers model enamel for years great spin with the paint pen probaly cleaner even up its slower
I think that would look good with the same color as your color handle.

Great idea love to see how well you take care of your tools!! ❤️
That's cool I might try it . I have two locking ratchets like that
Thank you so much Clay, gonna do this to mine.
Nice job Clay
Same here but the USA LOGO did mines in Red White Blue 👍
This deserves a beer my friend!
What's up guy's!?!??!! I just spent a week of my free time to paint almost all my tools. Still have some to go. Metric blue and SAE green.

Great video have a great one and stay safe 👍
Tried this yesterday works awesome!
That red would look good on your Mac axis ratchet
Awesome idea ! 👍🏻
Very neat!! i'll be giving that a try myself!!
Awesome my friend
The finishing product looks really cool. But brother you have some patients. I would have more paint on myself then the ratchet. 🤪🤪🤪
Koon, I do it a little differently I wait to the paint starts to dry then wipe it off using a kleenex and the flat of my thumb.
I also do it a little differently as well. So what I do is instead of the razor blade I just go straight to the brake clean works every time.
I’ve always wanted to do this but I couldn’t figure out how to do this without painting the entire ratchet by mistake 😂
Nice 👍
That looks real nice.
Ive been doing the same thing for a while. But those paint markers you have look a lot better than the ones i have.
The bigger paint markers work as well. I just did this the other day
Haasl did a video like this a while back.
A great idea for snap on to do
No lol can you just imagine what it would cost then.
good tip
i just did that to my wrenches
Too cool!
You do realize that you left your ratchet on?
Haha
LMAO...

I do this on tools and guns with nail polish. Seems like tougher paint.
would it be the same process with nail polish ?
