- Something cheap and easy to protect your wall when playing darts. 5x8 sheet of 1inch thick insulation and some felt makes a great dartboard back. Dart stick into great.
Lay the dartboard on top and trace a line around it, so you have a cut line. I ended up using steak knife to cut it out, but I am sure there are better ways.
Insulation was around $15 for a 5x8 sheet.
The glue works great, but it stinks big time. I also melts the insulation a little. A few bucks for the glue.
The felt was bought locally. I bought the mid grade kind. 3x6 sheet was under $6, with a coupon.
from Italy, thank you very much for this video, and for sharing this idea that came to you. the surround dartboard is essential if you want to play darts peacefully, whether it is yourself or others who are perhaps not at all experienced. the problem is that already made solutions, such as winmau crowns, cost a lot and do not protect much around. Instead this seems ideal, it satisfies all the requirements that an ideal surround dartboard must have (at least for me, because I would like to do it before Christmas, with all the children... 😅) namely: low price, easy availability, simple labor , sufficient thickness, height and width, durability and which does not damage the tips of the arrows. I will do my best to do it soon, but I thank you very much for the idea you shared
Thanks for the inspiration! I went with 2” board since we have long darts. I am so proud of the finished product. Looks so good for the price and the felt is the perfect material to cover. I used scotch 77 spray adhesive for felt and mounted the board to the wall using command strips since we’re renting and it needs to come with me! Great video!
Good to hear everything worked out! I thought about using 2 inch foam.

Very nice video. Thank you for taking the time to make it and to share it. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with my dartboard and how to protect the wall from the darts… And the kids! Your idea was perfect.
I ended up going with 2 inch foam board that was left over from a project. To cut out the hole, I made a hot knife out of a soldering gun and some leftover copper wire from a electrical project. I got that idea from another RUclips video and it worked absolutely great. No mess and a clean cut all the way around. Cheers!!
Great job!!
Thank you so much bruh, I was going to go plywood but this is much better on dart tips and no richoche.
+paul grogan I agree. I was going to use plywood too, but I was worried the darts would bounce off. This works perfect and it’s cheap!
Great idea... and cheap! You made me laugh a couple times with the comments - thanks!
Cheap and easy is the best way to go! It’s still holding up perfectly too.
Brilliant video thank you. Subscribed. Bought the stuff to try this myself. I want to add a Winmau surround though to make it all look more authentic. Do you think that’s possible or would I have to add a block of wood or something to make the board protrude more from the foam?
Good video, thanks for putting this up. For some reason dartboard surrounds can be very expensive to buy, although there are plenty of ways to easily and cheaply make a good one.
+8 Dart Finish I agree. Thanks.
I love all the different ideas you see on the internet. Why 'waste' your money on some standard thing while you can make something nice yourself.
Exactly what I was looking for
Thanks buddy. Built this board and it looks fantastic. Purchased the insulation and adhesive from Home Depot and the felt from Walmart.
metro7416 my kids and friends have put many darts into it. It’s holding up perfectly. It’s working better than I thought it would.
@@motofun72 what kinda felt did you buy at Walmart to cover Styrofoam? I was planning on using the foam floor squares
Nice job! Instead of felt, I used that foam floor tiles in the diamond-plate pattern on top of the foam insulation. The added thickness of the tiles helps keep darts with longer points from penetrating through to the wall.
Great idea!
Did you glue foam floor tiles to I Insulation??
Why didn’t I think of this? I spent $130 Australian a year or so ago on a dart board with a cabinet which turned out to be garbage, as a result while setting it up it ended up getting thrown and what could be broken was broken. So thank you for this video.
It’s good to learn from our mistakes...lol. This has held up over the years perfectly and still looks just like day one. Good luck!
I did this. Works like a charm. Thank you!
Good to hear. Have fun! Please help me by subscribing.
I applaud you , #1 awesome video , #2 this is what RUclips is made for #3 think I might go this route . Bravo
+James Wade thanks! It works great.
Great video. Love the honesty. I have never done this before. And these scissors, I should use a butter knife
How long should this take to assemble? Including the drying of the glue.
Elmers spray glue will work great if you don’t have any adhesive and have to go buy one. Stuff is really stick, so take your time when spraying with it. Do it outside if possible. I did it in my garage not knowing. And the garage floor took a while to get that glue off. But this stuff holds great.
Just curious... Does the dart get through to the drywall if it strikes the crease between the board and the foam? I’m debating between building one like this; or making a smaller opening and mounting my bracket on a one inch thick block of wood so the board overlaps the foam. Thoughts?
To be honest, a dart hasn’t gone in the crack (now that’s funny). Really though, it never has.
Technically, the dart still wouldn’t hit the drywall even if it did go in the crack. The dart board is a tight fit so the body of the dart would still get stopped by the foam or dart board.
Nice! Thanks for the quick reply!
1/2" drywall is cheaper and works better, and the darts won't go through it even if you throw them hard. You can also putty up the holes if they get too big.
This way, you can’t see the holes.
I know this video is kinda old, but if you still check your channel- could I just buy a roll of fabric to use instead of felt?
I guess you could. The idea of felt is, you can’t see the holes from the darts. The felt still looks as good as day one. If you are buying a role of fabric, they should have a roll of felt too.
Or you can get the Shock athletic giant workout mat, 46"x93", has diamond tread pattern. Pretty sweet
That's only 1/4" thick
this is a great video! thank you ...have been racking my brain how/what to use
Good luck. Mine is still holding up just like day one!
Thanks for this guide. Just subscribed. I have my board in a case so I modified it a bit but this is a great project
Thank you. It’s still holding up great.
can you send me a picture of how it looks with the board in a case.
Joe Donatella yeah just let me know an email to send it to and I’ll send a few photos
@@jamescaspari8734 I have mine in a case also. Do you mind posting at least 1 pic so I can have an idea what it looks like?
This is perfect i'm going to try it. The video looks like you used 1 sheet of felt. The text said the insulation was 5x8 and the felt 3x6. Did you cut the insulation down first to be smaller than the 3x6?
Yes, I cut the insulation to the size I wanted first. Make it whatever size you want. Once you have the size you want, cut the felt to fit.
It’s still holding up perfectly.

What Kind of foam is it ? Thanks
Is there anything you would have done differently after 1 year of it being on the wall? Do you think some velcro would work on keeping it on the wall? Thanks.
+Lou Villafana it actually not attached to the wall. I made the fit tight around the dartboard, so I guess you can say it’s hanging on the dartboard. It never moves. Just make you hole on the small side and adjust from there.
I would use different glue. The stuff I used had a strong chemical smell. It goes away and works well, but smells for a couple weeks. Maybe I would try hot glue but work fast.
It’s held up perfect with all the darts going into it (from my wife and kids of course)!
That's pretty bloody good, mate. 🙂

Insulation isn't meant to be punctured, and becomes increasingly more damaged each time it's struck by a dart...
Should've gone with a foam protector, which can absorb darts without sustaining considerable wear and tear
This is genius
Thanks. Give it a try. It’s been working great, still to to day!
Great job! This beats the crap out of that 69$ viper one.
this is so relatable 👌👏 just what I needed! thaaaank you 😁
+Carina Pokipoki very easy to do and it has been holding up perfectly. Good luck.
Where did you buy your felt/fabric covering for the backboard??
A fabric store and I asked for thick felt.
Thanks man!!! i just made the same one, i just put red felt over the black felt for a little contrast..but yeah, it was more than 40$ ...although excellent idea.
Cool. I’m glad it helped you out. Mine is still holding up great. If you haven’t subscribed yet, please help me by subscribing. Thanks again!
@@motofun72 where did u get red felt from? I have lots of thoese foam floor puzzle mats so I was thinking about putting thoese on top
@@futbol1972 I went to JOANN Fabric store.
Thanks man! Was gonna upload a pic of what I did using ur method but it will not ...
Total cost less than 20 bucks...thanks!
That’s what I’m talking about, $20!
Mine is still holding up great after a couple years of use. If you liked it, subscribe to my channel to help me out (if you haven’t done so yet). Thanks.
How did you attach the board to the wall?
He didn’t. Just friction around the dart board itself
What is the material and where I can find it?
It the thickest black felt fabric the store had. I went to Joann fabric. They have a crazy amount to pick from. Cheap too.

Thanks for this great idea!
Super 77 spray glue by 3M would be perfect for this. I use it for everything
Good to know, thank you!
What did you use please
It’s in the video. Foam.
Did you put anything on the floor for fallouts?
No, just the carpet in the room. Dart never fall out of the dart board or the backboard. It a dart hits the metal, it will jump back and land on the floor.
What is the measurement on the board? Length and width? Thank you.
I will measure it tonight and let you know, since I don’t remember exactly.
I made it longer, since my kids wanted to start playing darts too.
Sorry for the delay. I got sidetracked. My backboard is 32x62 inches.
It’s 7 inches on each side of the dartboard. Top is 7 and 1/4 from the dartboard.
Basically, if you wanted a square backboard, a 32x32 would be perfect. Center the dartdartboard and it will great.
Instead of felt could you just paint the pink insulation board??
I thought about that too, but the pink would show after a few darks. With felt, you can’t see the holes and it’s still holding up.
great job im planning to mount mine on just some plywood thanks fir sharing very nice 👍🏽👍🏽
+James Webster thanks.
I thought about plywood too, but I was afraid the darts wouldn't stick.
@@motofun72 yea that's my only concern with plywood Darts may break or bend when hitting the hard surface
@@futbol1972 the foam works perfectly.
I would use staples instead of glue. Much faster.
I tried staples, but they wouldn’t stay in when I pulled the cloth tight.

Me too
How much fabric did you need?
I only covered the top and sides, so I measured the size of the backboard and bought extra. Not sure of exact amount.
If foam board was 5x8x1
I would think 9x10 of felt 😊
What material is this?
Foam insulation.
@@motofun72 whats the second material you cover it?
@@Motorirumori it’s felt. The thickest they had.
Thank you for the video! Subscribed! Bought my stuff at Home Depot and Joann
Let know know what glue you used, if you used something different. I have a friend that’s going to make one too.
Oh, thanks for subscribing too. 👍🏻
motofun I used Elmer spray glue. It ate up the foam too like yours. But wasn’t smelly.
Good to know, thanks.
motofun I also used a steak knife and it worked pretty good.
Thks for sharing.
Thanks for watching. It’s help up extremely well.
Genius
Looks great
+nordiq21 thanks. It works better than I thought.
Great idea
Thanks. It works great. You should try it.
Imagine how sweet it would have looked in burgundy and gold though.
Congratulations
I used sound board. You can find it at ur local hardware store.
