I’m certain that if you’re white, you will suffer A LOT less discrimination in Japan, there black people are seen as “BAD” at least if you’re white they will give you an opportunity, since they asume you’re smug and dumb at worst.

Unless you are in an hour rush there would not be anyone sitting on you as they try to avoid each other as they can. But hey I have no issue for a random Japanese school girl sitting next to me. LOL

I've been to Tokyo many times, and I've never had an empty seat next to me (unless it was off-peak hours and everyone spread out in the train). I look like a typical Scandinavian, but I'm fairly short, middle-aged and dress well - I look like someone's harmless uncle. :p

There are people who have three arms. What is the difference between the former and the latter? I think the difference is how many people in each condition there are in the world. As you know, the number of people who have two arms is far greater than that of people with three arms. In other words, the vast majority of humans have only two arms. That's why the former sentence sounds more correct than the latter sentence despite it being true that there are indeed people who have three arms. Now, this sweiland75 person said, "Japanese don't mind being openly racist but do mind being criticized for it." The implications of this sentence is that the majority of Japanese are a bunch of open racists, therefore, Japanese are mostly evil people. As I said earlier, to make a sentence to label a certain group of people as a certain quality, you have to make sure that what you say about the group of people is true for the majority of them. But it's blatantly obvious that there is no way to measure the actual number of racist Japanese and what percentage of Japanese are racists. Then how did he know that Japanese are racist? Because of this video? Even if what interviewees said about Japanese is true, that doesn't mean most Japanese are racist, right? It only proves some Japanese are racist. So the only reason I can think of why he said what he said is because he just wants it to be the case that the majority of Japanese are racists. In other words, he's saying Japanese are racists, hateful people, for the sake of hating Japanese. In my opinion, a racist is someone who hates a certain group of people based on their race, ethnicity or nationality. He is clearly exuding hate for Japanese. That's why I said, "That's racist."

To be honest, Japan is a great country to stay in for 1-2 years while studying at a language school or something like that, and just play around. When it comes to living in Japan its another story. After the novelty wears off many foreigners get depressed like the white guy in the video because the Japanese after all are too different, and the Japanese society simply is too depressing and its pure hell to work there. There is a reason why like 10-20 people jump in front of the train every single day only in Tokyo. When it comes to discrimination white people are probably rated highest, but I out of experience know that many many Japanese people dislike white people as well. Of course everyone is friendly when you meet them but they can talk some really nasty stuff behind closed doors, I've heard it myself. When it comes to other Asian people, black people, Indian people etc, they unfortunately don't like them at all. It wouldn't surprise me if they are like 100 years behind when it, especially, comes to the view of black people. I have heard Japanese people openly call black people "scary gorillas" numerous times followed by laughter. Of course they wouldn't say this in front of black people. Sorry to say this.
I lived in Japan for a long time (15+ years) in the past because of work and almost all foreigners I used to meet there were like the sad white guy in the video, or they became like that after a few years. Almost everyone was really depressed and had no real Japanese friends at all, not even people who had been there for 10+ years. Its so hard to connect with Japanese people on a deep level so most foreigners in Japan end up hanging out with other foreigners.
In Japan you will always be seen and treated as a gaijin (outsider), it doesn't matter if you speak more fluent Japanese than the Japanese themselves, it doesn't matter if you have better manners than the Japanese themselves, you will always be that outsider. Every single time a Japanese person talks to you, they will talk to you as an outsider in their mind. You will never be a "normal person" in Japan no matter how much you try. All this together becomes a super negative, lonely and depressing cycle in the long run and thats why most foreigners escape the country after a few years.

I always got the perception that they didn’t feel one way or the other about ethnic Europeans, and reserved their racist bigotry for Ethnic Africans and ethnic Middle-Easterners/North-Africans. Ethnic Europeans are stared at there and thought of as strange but never noticed much interference.

Personally its hard to feel bad for some of these people because no one is really forcing them to stay there and most of them weren't even born or raised there, so it isn't really their home or some last chance they have for peace from some war or oppressive government. But yet they are expressing their gerviances like something is gonna happen...
I mean 71% of Japanese don't even want diversity, truly most Japanese don't want their culture flooded with foreigners. They see them as something exotic or a rare novelty and that's it.
So I can't feel really bad for them plus nothing they say or do will techinally change how Japan is and I think some have accepted it since they're there just sitting and tolerating the discrimination they are getting hit with.

Japan wants to bring in immigrants because of the necessity of preserving their country, but pushes them away because they are very homogeneous and thus very wary. America wants to bring in immigrants to help grow the economy and continue the melting pot tradition, but pushes them away because they come illegally and leech off welfare. Yes we both have a push and pull relationship with foreigners, but for very different reasons.

I addressed racism and being bullied in Japan before and I remember being told by some Japanese people that I am the racist one because I am trying to make Japan look bad. I was complaining about the bully and the racism, not the country. I love the country and the people but people who tries to justify racism makes me sick
All countries such as the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan have a history of slaughter and discrimination. Nowadays I think the only thing we can do is to be more friendly so that we don't crack down on other races again.
I am so sorry for them as a Japanese. To be honest, when I was young, I was avoiding sitting next to a foreigner, because in my city you don't find many foreigners and was a bit scared of them (although I never hated them)
but after living in Europe for several years, I understood how terrible people may feel. (I also experienced many discriminations here, like some people swear to me or throw a can etc.)
So now, when I find a space available next to a foreigner in Japan, I often sit next to them.

I am greek (but i live in Berlin) i for myself have no problems with other nationalities.
But many Greeks for example are racist towards Albanians or Bulgarians and Albanians are racist towards Greeks.

The Problem in Japan is that the society in Japan is almost a 100 percent japanese, while Germany for example and especially Towns like cologne, berlin or frankfurt are very multi cultural, so the people here are used too see foreigners

なのに、
「差別されていると全く感じない」と言う人が１人も出て来ない。
「差別された」と感じる人がいるならば、逆に必ず「差別された事がない」または「ほとんど差別と感じたことはない。」「それは差別ではなく、違いだ」という人も存在するはずです。
なぜ出て来ないのですか？
祖国以外で文化や習慣の違う国に行けば、異なる文化や習慣を感じるのは当然の事であって、それによって起きた事を「差別」と感じるか、
「文化・習慣の違い」として他国をリスペクトするかは人それぞれです。残念なことに、世界中全ての国に差別主義者は必ずいるのは事実ですが、まるで日本が強い差別主義国家であるかのような錯覚を起こさせる動画の構成はまちがっていると思います。
そもそも、この動画が意図する「差別の定義」が明確でない限り、いくら誰に、また、多くの人にインタビューしたところで全く意味を成さないと思いますし、各国にいる差別主義者や被害意識が強めの方を余計に煽動するだけだと思います。
日本人、韓国人、インド人、中国人その他のアジア人が欧米に行って、そのままその国の習慣を貫いたら、それは欧米人からは異端、変わったもの異常に感じるでしょう？
逆の場合も然りです。
それは差別ではなく、違いなのです。
お互いの文化、習慣を尊重し、理解しあってゆっくりと受け入れていけばいいだけの話です。
どこの国へ行っても、
その国について学んだり、馴染もうとせず、「差別」を意識的に探そうとすれば、そんなことはいくらでも
あります。
差別ではなく、違いとして受け止め、「差別」と言われる言動をする側・される側が、共に相手の立場に立って考える必要もあるかと思います。

This asian boss channel home base in south korea, so when you see video about japan, some is strange like this video, the interviewer start with survey discrimination, directly asking about discrimination. Maybe person got interviewed also paid actor like korean girl one n one oriental asian guy.

@@남궁민수-q3p if you see episode : what japanese think about bts n kpop. Most interviewed said they prefer kpop rather than jpop, it only because interviewer did interviewed in korean town, shin okubo. But if you see like channel ask japanese and japanese man yuta, mostly peoples prefer jpop.
After living in Japan for about 6 years, I find that the interviewees were pretty accurate and understand the situation thre.

i had my worst experience with discrimination at my University here in Japan. The lead teacher of major made fun of me and even harassed me to the point I had to go to the school’s harassment center. I cried in front of the staff because the teacher always said small remarks and jokes about me and it went to the point where he would use me as a punching bag when he gets angry by making me feel stupid. I was traumatized.

@@izzy9279 Based on research I have done, if you are white or fair skinned you should be perfectly fine. But, if not, the best place to study in all of Asia are the darker skinned countries in genetics and China, specifically Shanghai. But in China, in smaller villages and towns, or even in the city, they tend to want to touch you a lot. Also, they like pictures, even without consent. They mean no harm, but still. But if you want the least discrimination, your best bet is China. Idk how their housing policies work in Korea, but either way. Japan and Korea aren't the best choices for the quietest life ofc. Which yes is understandable. But if you are lighter in skin tone, or in fact some part Asian, or at least know some of the language, and I don't mean koreaboo Korean, I mean actual conversation Korean, than yeah I think it should be fine.
Learning the Japanese language and culture for 3 years, I think that visually, Japanese people are very polite, hospitable and genuine to foreigners, but they live and work as a 'closed-group' (homogeneous), and you'll never know what they are actually thinking about you or if they are judging you. Basically, it's like "If you want to visit our country or enjoy our services, you're always welcomed. But if you want to be a part of us? we don't think so.” I’m sorry if any Japanese feels offended when reading my comment. It’s just my opinion and I’m not against you guys at all. I respect your culture and working ethics, that’s why I am fascinated in learning your language:)

Sexpats don't go to Japan. It's well known to be hard af to get laid there compared to other Asian countries (only Korea has a worse reputation). Even amongst themselves, they have one of the lowest sexual encounter rates among developed countries (how often they have sex). Japan is notoriously tough for western foreign women as well.

I think Japan is a difficult country to live in.
I was born in Argentina and I grew up in Spain and suffered discrimination. And then I came back to Argentina and I suffered discrimination for being Spanish. I think the only ones that don't suffer discrimination are those that NEVER leave their hometown. To those, please, travel.

Lived in the 90's in Japan..and I must say it's most of the time ignorance. I'm a European and coloured.. so I know what hardcore racism is. I had a wonderful time in Japan and I will never forget it. There is no single country on this planet, where people do not discriminate.

Ofcourse there is discrimination everywhere but atleast its frowned upon and in the west, it's even illegal (like refusing rental units based on race). But in Japan, that is widely practiced, not frowned upon and even praised. So don't use every other nation as a yardstick for Japan. Japan's racism is on a whole new level.

I remember talking about racism and being bullied in Japan to Japanese people before and some people were very understanding and willing to learn why it is racist and what they could do next time when they interact with foreigners. But I remember those people who called me a liar and said that I am the racist one because I am trying to make Japan look bad. I am not complaining about the country, I am complaining about the racists and bullies that I experienced in Japan. It makes me very sad that instead of trying to fix the problem, some try to hide the problem.

I live in Miyazu. The whole community watches over me to make sure nothing bad happens to me. From my neighbors to city hall. Seriously . They raised me like a baby bird providing me with food, warmth, transportation , advice and friendship. I was a complete stranger. Now I feel a member of the community in a position to give back. I am from China. My parents stayed 5 years in Japan when they were 20 something. They told me that their Japanese company did see them as foreigners. But a lot of people were very nice to them, my mother made two very close friend in Japan and my dad had a very kind mentor. They also stayed in NZ for 6 years but did not made any friends that are so close.

Then your parents must have been nice enough to respect the culture. From other clips that I've been seeing (and I've seen many), most Japanese tend to hate the Chinese the most among all foreigners due to their lack of respect.
As a Chinese whos born and raised in NZ, my family faces the same struggle like you and your family does. If you are white, white people will treat you as a local person. If you are Asian, people will always ask me "where are you from?" "where are your parents from?" etc. In NZ, people just look at your colour of your skin. They do not care what your background is. That is why most of my friends are local asians. We share the same issues.

I'm white from the US. I think what you're saying is more true now than when this video was made 5 yrs ago. Americans have very thin skins. Discrimination has been raised from being just seen as an annoyance to attempted murder. Which is comical because discrimination was often fatal in the US in the past. But today just questioning a person about their behavior is seen as persecution.

When I went to Japan, I hardly had anyone sit next to me on the train. I am a white Australian, many tattoos and a big beard and I wasn't upset or disappointed, I expected it. I knew what I was walking into and I accepted it. I made Japanese friends there while on my short stay that took a chance to get to know me and I had a great time while staying.

I loved Japan but the one thing I learned about when I visited was colorism. My cousins are light skin and mixed (white and Asian) and look Japanese and I am usually more tan and definitely look SE Asian. People would treat me different from my cousins and would comment on how “dark” I was. They didn’t know my cousins speak Japanese 🥴😂

I've lived in Japan a total of four years but on three separate occasions and I have to say that for the most part Japanese people are not racist, just uneducated/uninformed. Being half Japanese I did get some dirty looks because I don't speak Japanese. My boyfriend who is 6'2", husky, and has naturally curly hair did get a lot of attention, not all of it bad. However, there were moments when where we were told to leave a restaurant or shop because "only Japanese. No English!" Funny thing is that my boyfriend speaks Japanese a lot better than I do. We did have one truly racist, bigoted moment when we tried to get haircuts. A coworker suggest a salon so we went after work, when we sat down a stylist and manager came up and started pointing to the door and speaking quite loudly, for Japanese people. Thankfully a woman who spoke English came over to help. The woman tried to calm the manager and stylist down, but then suddenly got quite red and visibly upset. She hurriedly paid, grabbed our hands, and stormed out. Turns out the manager used some really racial and derogatory terms for me being half and my boyfriend for being heavy. The woman apologized profusely and was shocked and very upset. She kept saying that the Japanese aren't like that, that they were acting shameful, and that she won't go back again. Sorry for the long story but Japan is not a racist country as a whole.
That's a shame. Sorry you went through that. I think it was an eye opening experience for that woman who helped you too.

five big reasons why the Japanese doesn't make good friends:
1 they are too lazy to learn foreign languages and they laugh at our accents when we speak their language
2 they never tell us what mistakes we would make, even though it is the only solution to improve us in front of them
3 they judge what people deserve to hear their "honne" (true thoughts and feelings) and they lies most of the time
4 they insult us behind the back without seeking to know us more and they refuse to talk about themselves
5 and they are too serious , they only swears by work-work in their life and by their rules

It is not that different with Japan in Korea.. I think maybe the reason is about no race diversity in their life. I also witnessed once that people dont try to sit next to black guy in bus. I was very embarrassed with their behavior so i sit by him. I cant forget that he smiled at me gently at that moment. And i realized that he knew about people's behavior. I was shamed as a Korean. Some person in this vedeo said "Maybe they are uncomfortable with foreigners." And, yes i think so, but i want you to know that in Korea, when some people is uncomfortable with foreigners(witch is racism..but) then, mostly it is not because of hateness or ignoring thing, just because of unfamiliar thing. Most Koreans have no experience to communicate with foreigners. So, they feel unfamiliar and kind of scared to communicate with foreigners. And, some people dont know their behavior can be felt rude by foreigners. I guess japan is same. As a Korean, I am very sorry for foreigners who experienced racism in Korea.
And i think it will be resolved by getting know about forieners. So i think media can change the people's uncomfortable thing(=unfamiliar) with foreigners. TV is very effective. After broadcasting the entertainment program like 'bijungsangwhedam'(비정상회담) which foreigners introduce their culture and debate about many things with Koreans(They speak all of that in Korean), people became more familiar with foreigners. Anyway, whatever the ways, i hope more people know that what makes foreigners feels umcomfortable/rude. And also i hope that Asians dont have experiences many intended racism in Western world too.

I lived in Korea for 5 years and for me it was totally understandable that Korean people were not happy being around foreigners. Number one reason was that the majority of foreigners living in Korea do not take the country, the people and the culture seriously. Just like the guy in the video said at the end - you have to put some effort, you need to show people a good reason to like you and respect you.
In my last two years, when I really put a lot of effort to learn decent amount of Korean language and talked with all these Korean people in the community like random 아줌마, 택시 기사님 etc. my life in Korea improved significantly. There's still a fair amount of discrimination for mixed couples/marriages but that's often because parents do not want to lose their child, who will most likely leave Korea to live abroad. In most cases, quitting your job will make it very hard for you to get back on the job market if you come back in case your relationship doesn't work out. Some parents don't want to take that risk

Im my opinion as a Japanese, the habit, not sitting next to people on trains doesn’t include any intention to discriminate you. It’s just their choices, thinking that I don’t have to sit just for 5 or 10 minutes and there is a someone sitting next to an empty seat, and I know if I sit there, the person next to me may feel uncomfortable because Japanese seats on trains is usually narrow and people are packed. Sorry for my obscure English, but I would like you to know that is not always discrimination.

From one of my Japanese friends, I've actually heard that Osaka people are a lot more warm and welcoming. She often would tell me that while there are a lot of foreigners in Tokyo, Japanese that live there can be stubborn. Maybe not all, but enough.

今の日本は地域によっては日本人が在日外国人から差別や身体的に傷つけられる時代に変わりつつあり恐ろしいです。 親日外国人は大歓迎ですが、反日外国人は排除する新しい入国制限法を作って欲しい。 これは差別ではなく区別です。

I an american-japanese, I lived in Japan for 3 years, since i loved watching Japanese cartoon, I willingly studied Japanese and their culture . Although i dont look like asian, i have never experienced any kind of discrimination, and perhaps many japanese were very welcoming as long as you can speak Japanese. I see all these comments about harsh experience in Japan regarding to discrimination but i just cant believe that...
everyone has different experiences, just because you never saw it or experienced it yourself doesn't mean it never happened.

The first thing I can say is that Japanese people do not consider discrimination in many things that foreigners find discriminatory. It is a Japanese culture and a lifestyle that has changed with the times.
For example, I saw many comments that "even Japanese people don't get along well." But that is a Japanese custom. Even if we are both Japanese, we do not treat strangers in a friendly manner.
Also, many people don't speak English, so Japanese people tend to want to stay away from foreigners. It's not discrimination. It's just shy.
After that, Japan has a long history of monoethnicity, and the ratio of foreigners is still low. Many Japanese live without contact with foreigners. Therefore, Japanese people are not accustomed to foreigners. I think that is one of the reasons.

five big reasons why the Japanese doesn't make good friends:
1 they are too lazy to learn foreign languages and they laugh at our accents when we speak their language
2 they never tell us what mistakes we would make, even though it is the only solution to improve us in front of them
3 they judge what people deserve to hear their "honne" (true thoughts and feelings) and they lies most of the time
4 they insult us behind the back without seeking to know us more and they refuse to talk about themselves
5 and they are too serious , they only swears by work-work in their life and by their rules

I think that it's becoming just an excuse to say that the reason Japanese people discriminate is because they're homogenous and rely on media. They have internet almost as good as South Korea. In fact, more Japanese reach out to the West than Koreans. It's just an excuse to say that they don't know that they are acting racist or discriminatory. They have the 2nd fastest internet in the world. Just like SK everyone has a smart phone. There is no reason that in Tokyo, a hub for international dealings, would have discrimination. I could understand the country areas, but not in a city like Tokyo.
In terms of travel and tourism, Japan has historically had a higher rate of tourism. SK only recently saw a spark of foreign tourism and immigration due to the Hallyu wave. If you compare Tokyo to Seoul, overwhelmingly more people have visited or lived in Tokyo. We aren't talking about Japanese and SK people living overseas, though that is important, we are talking about the racism that Japanese people living in Tokyo give towards foreigners. SK may have sent more kids to school overseas, but Japan has had more foreign trade than SK and has historically had more foreigners living there than SK outside of the military. Neither country, especially in Seoul and Tokyo has an excuse, however, for their lack of understanding of what discrimination. Both cities have had broadcasts called out for their blackface and poor representation of black people multiple times. In the age of the internet, there's no excuses anymore. We need to stop making excuses for problematic behavior

But, as long as they are opening themselves up to the public, and accepting funds from outside sources and joining in on UN trade etc they should also open themselves up to the differences of other people. It is true that this channel seems to have a slight bias, but commenting on complaints about it will not solve anything. I think we need to take the issue of discrimination in Japan seriously. This is not simply because of Japanese people's fear of foreigners. One of the major barriers that long-term immigrants to Japan face is the sense of alienation, which I find very difficult to deal with.
I have learned many things from the comments in this video. "You speak good Japanese!" used as a compliment which is used as a compliment, can also be seen as insulting. Anyway, I am glad that I learned something. I've made a step forward.

I think they rephrased it to "it's not that Japanese people are racist". It's definitely confusing if you're listening and reading, but I guess they make it more succinct for deaf audiences.

You haven't seen much anime then. They don't use skin color as discrimination on anime, but there's a lot of racism there. Ichigo from Bleach was discriminated for having orange hair. And there's a shitload of manga set on fantasy universes where there's discrimination with hair or eyes color. I don't even talk about catgirls and such "demi-humans", who are the anime version of race discrimination, and often live in slavery.

@@にゃむ-e1s 差別だと一言で片付けるから結局何も解決しないし、良くも悪くも現状から動かないんですよね。不動産とかも似たよう問題あるけど、過去に数えきれないほどの外国人が日本で好き勝手して日本人を困らせた挙句、外国人に対してある程度の区別制度が設けられたり、過去の外国人が原因になってる事も数多くあると思います。
