- In 2018 alone, Bangkok hosted over 22 million tourists from around the world, and extended its title as the world’s most visited city for the fourth year in a row. But while tourists may fawn over Bangkok’s many inexpensive pleasures, have you ever wondered how life is like for the foreigners who actually live in this tourism mecca? We hit the streets Bangkok to find out.

That German guy made a really good point about some foreigners live inside their bubbles. It’s so true.
It is true in a lot of countries in Asia. (Funny thing is is true of foreigners in the West. Lots of Chinese/Koreans can't speak English in USA/Canada and lived their whole lives there...)
But those Asians in the west haven’t complained that local people don’t speak their language while many foreigners in Thailand do complain

These people are really much more thoughtful and understanding towards Thai culture than I expected , they understand that they should bear the burden of learning Thai language and understanding their culture as they are the ones who moved there .

of course you have to learn the language when you move in a new country, thats my opinion... its sad to see that many people are not willing to learn the (new) language... this is also an indication that these people also dont want to learn about the culture and locals/natives

Two comments as a Thai person:
1. Last time I was living in Thailand in 2013, it was standard practice that foreigners were paid 5X the salary of a Thai person working at the same company. At the place I worked, me and the Thai workers made about ฿11,000 a month and the foreign workers made ฿55,000 a month.
2. Regarding the Indian gentleman’s comment about how expats have helped in Thailand’s development - expats have actually been crucial to Thailand’s development since like at least the 13th century (for example the Chinese artisans who helped develop Sukhothai lacquerware).
Is the payment for foreigners based on law? It might be to discourage the hiring of foreign workers over domestic
I worked for a month on my computer for a foreign company....with all of the co-working spaces opening we don't need to work for Thai companies to live there. However, if they try to have a group work remotely there doing the same job they can get busted for illegally working.
In the contextual Thai sense of Face, no, I am not bound by those fake rules, it is why farang can achieve things the average Thai can not by their own internal limitations.
50,000 THB is the minimum for monthly salary at a private company, in order to get visa and work permit. So that pay difference is entirely the government's fault. No foreigner wants to run foul of Immigration, so blame them.
Meanwhile, if you work for the government, they can pay you less than this 'foreigner minimum wage'. For school teachers, that still means you'll get paid more than Thai colleagues. But for university lecturers, foreigners end up being paid less than Thai colleagues (despite not having the bill for any of their degrees paid by taxpayer money).
No surprise that prices r spike up in expat areas like bubbles.
I do not understand what makes Thailand attractive to foreigners. Even though some people are from developed countries, I am just as surprised as I am Thai. But I'm glad that you all like Thailand. Have a nice stay here We always welcome you.😁🙏

I'm Indonesian and I was a teacher in Thailand for 3 months. I was prepared my self abt welcoming culture shock and weird thing's that might be happen, but that's totally big no. Thai people just being slightly nice to foreigner, they help me a lot if I'm lost, working, and even translating. There's a few times that people's think I'm a Thai and talk but being sooo polite when they know that I'm foreigner and can't speak Thai. If some of you guys has too much worries abt go to Thailand or working there, just do it.

I'm amazing with kids but only speak English, would be willing to spend lots of time learning Thai though.

I first came to Thailand in 1967 and never really left, my heart has always been here. I have lived the real Thai life as well as the expat life and have a large extended family here in Thailand. Family, culture, food, people and weather all make for a great place for me. Learning the language is a must to really enjoy Thailand to the fullest.

I’m Mexican and lived In Chiang Mai for about 4 years and Thais treated me like a true Thai. I never had to pay for the foreign fees.
As a Thai, everytime I see foreigners, I think 'Why do they leave their developed countries and travel/live in Thailand?' It's good to know that they're fine.
It is because really the only benefit that gives us is a good job, if you can make a living in Thailand or you're already retired, Thailand is an amazing place.
Because it is so stressful living there.
Actually, Thailand looks very developed to me (as a westerner), especially after spending a week or so in Cambodia, Myanmar or Laos. You also have a surprising amount of social mobility - my Thai in-laws worked hard to get ahead and now enjoy a comfortable middle-class lifestyle that many foreigners would envy.

I miss Thailand so much. I lived there for 3.5 years as a high school student and I 100% plan to go back after I graduate college.
I have strongly considered living in Thailand. Heck, I wanted to stay there after high school and go to college with my Thai friends. I knew that cost of living was a lot less than the US and that the healthcare there wasn’t going to bury me in bills....

Celaeno I attend Mae Fah Luang University. However it’s not a university I recommend. It’s a beautiful campus and it has nice teachers but the international student program isn’t the best since they neglect the international students a lot. I’m planning on transferring to Mahidol or Thammasat. Maybe even Chiangmai University I think those would be better options if you are considering doing an exchange here!

Yeah, but you know the country and the language, even if it's dangerous. Which some places in Mexico aren't. If you go across the world to a shithole country and you can't speak the language and don't know where and who are dangerous or your way around, that place is 10x more dangerous than where you came from.
I went to Thailand in 2009 and 2015. I'm going there again in 2020. It's amazing country.

I'm from Indonesia but I do agree that Thailand especially Bangkok is convenient with relatively inexpensive living cost compare to other Indonesia major cities like Jakarta and Surabaya. Oh and don't forget the street food too... The Best!!!

@Navi I'm not a party people tho 😅😅 but yeah that one could be another factor too.. everyone has their own perspectives 🙏 I lived in Bangkok for awhile and on my opinion it more convenient in term of transportations, infrastructures and life quality. But similar with other major cities there is problem with the air quality too. But In general I enjoy my stay there 😊🙏

I want to move to Thailand because I love how rich the culture seems and for that reason I am learning Thai currently... But sometimes I get discouraged by my own fears and stuff... So, I just want to say to everyone that has a dream, you can achieve it. And the people in this video are proof that nothing is impossible, you just gotta work hard towards your goals and you might actually achieve it.

And that's the case for me, I am not korean. I am a language junkie, that's where my nickname comes from, and also as I said before, I have trust issues so I don't like revealing too much personal info online. Instead, I chose a nickname other than my real name in a language that I do speak but it's not my mother tongue to use as my online name.

Please rename this 'What’s It Like Being A Foreigner In Bangkok?'. A lot of foreigners in Thailand including myself did not like living in Bangkok and moved to another city. It is very expensive, crowded, noisy and polluted. If you like big capital and are not looking to experience the local way of living then BKK is for you. The girl at 4 min brings a good point, Bangkok is not really representative of Thailand, well, where most foreigners live in BKK. I can say the same about Nimman or Old City in Chiang Mai. I currently am in Chum Phae, Thai Countryside, 2 hours away from the nearest Movie Theater. There are still foreigners here and enough foreign restaurants. Bangkok is not really different from Montreal, where I come from, and the cost of living is similar. The big difference is the street food culture in BKK, it is huge.

Save me Ichigo!! Well it’s a long story but in 2017, I gave my life to Jesus, the best decision of my life. I was so excited and passionate about life and people. So I kept asking Him to reveal the plans He had for me but He kept saying wait wait wait. So for the first year of my life of being a Christian, I worked in this great Coffee Trailer as a barista. It was a tough job given the Texas heat in a metal box. But I listened to God, not with patience or grace but with stubbornness and complaints. Until finally one day, He opened up a door for me to follow my best friend across the world to Vietnam, when He said loud and clear to me Go Go Go! At the time, the thought of leaving my home was scary and impossible. But the idea grew on me, the desire to leave everything behind to follow Gods calling for my life seemed possible. So I decided to quit my job, sell my car and say goodbye to my family and friends. Fast forward, 6 months into Vietnam, I am homesick, lonely and unemployed. Crying out to God, why He called me to a foreign land, where I can’t speak the language, don’t know how to ride the motorbike and don’t have any friends. Yet the stillness of His voice that whispered to me since day 1, Trust Me, remained. So I trusted Him. Day in, day out of tears and fears. Now fast forward a few months, I got my first job as an English teacher, I met some cool Vietnamese friends. Life started to open up and I thought Vietnam isn’t so bad after all. So I made it my goal to explore my options and opportunities. Now 20 months in, I have my dream apartment living in district 2, a dream job creating my own lessons and teaching a class of 10-15 young professionals in companies throughout hcmc, a loving and grounding community of thriving and giving people and most of all my first boyfriend that is everything I prayed for when I ask God in my future husband. I guess you could say that, God knew the desires of my heart even before I did and by following Him, somehow, someway, He make things work out for my good. Even when I don’t know, He knew all along. I’m so thankful for this life and all the relationships I have made in Vietnam. I can say that Vietnam is my home now ♥️

Do yourself a favor and get out of Bangkok for a bit, but not south...go north! No islands there but worth seeing the mountains. Don't ride the elephants or take tuktuks. But taking a jitney up north is ok if you can get them to stop. LOL
Download “grab taxi” app in Thailand, it’s quite the same as uber app. It will make your life easier there if you want to find a taxi so that you can avoid those taxi scam.
If you wanna take bus in Bangkok I suggest downloading the Viabus app from the government, they are really helpful

It's good that some of these people understand the importance of learning Thai. I've seen so many foreigners coming and living here thinking they can get around assuming everyone speaks English to them. That's super arrogant and condescending.

If you are going to live in a country, you must learn the language, especially if you want to make that country your home. You don't even have to be fluent, but just good enough to show that you respect the local culture. Learning language is the bare minimum.

I remembered being asked by older Americans (in the States, about 10 years ago)...
"Do Thai people ride elephants to places?"
"I've heard that there are Elephant Basil (like Beef Basil) in Thailand."
I was not upset at all, just explained that Elephants are in zoos or conservation centers. because I myself have my own version of perception towards other countries I've never visited as well.
I think It's all in the movies. Exactly like one of them said in the interview. I am glad that young people nowadays embrace different cultures.

When I was a kid I visited my cousins in KL. They attended the international school. Even American kids wanted to know if we lived in tree houses and if kangaroos and koalas were dangerous. 🙄

False, all of southeast asian countries HAVE EAST ASIAN INFLUENCE , mainly chinese , so there ARE east asian ''vibes''.
The second most temples in thailand are chinese temples. Several thai food has CHINESE influence etc etc. , the main influence of thailand comes from india, but also chinese influence, just less than indian. (im also thai-chinese so i do know what influence there is in our culture). If you see more of thailand youll notice it much more, and ofcourse without those infos they dont know. Foreigners mainly dont look up where the influences of a culture is actually from etc. (or from what countries it was influenced from)

Knowing Thai is a double edged sword for me. A lot of middle aged and younger know a good amount of English and IMO it benefits them a lot being able to build their English confidence talking to me. The only time I wish I spoke thai is so I could ask old people local history questions and about ghost stories lmfao

@Noviya Magic I've seen some others but I was wondering if Asian Boss would do it. I scrolled through their whole channel since other people are telling me they did it, I even did "control F" and searched it through youtube and I haven't found anything.
A few months ago I was in touch with Bangkok University cause I want to study Entrepreneurship... I’m about to apply cause in my view, Thailand’s one of the most “mind opened” countries, and I was really surprised of how they answered me fast, and apparently it’s easy. This video really helped me cause I really trust in Asian Boss work. Knowing a country just by the dramas is not the best way. 🤭
I also would like to know if you guys recommend me the Bangkok University Internacional....
I would recommend Public Universities rather than private universities such as Bangkok University. The top uni in Thailand are all public (Chulalongkorn, Thammasart, Mahidol etc.) but it's a lot harder to get in and potentially more expensive. But since these 3 uni's are situated in Inner Bangkok, it's much more convenient. (Bangkok University is in outer Bangkok) :)
But if you like private unis then Bangkok/Assumption are great choices! Good luck
G if you want to study in Thailand, go for public universities. The quality of education is much better in public universities in Thailand.
CT Thai Chulalongkorn is famous, but it’s so hard to get in, I don’t even know how is it, but I think in any country it’s hard to get in a public university... I’m gonna search for information, thx!

Chulalongkorn International Business school is accredited in being one of the best business schools in Asia and is ranked in the top 100 in the world ranking. If you can get in, you'll have good job prospects for sure! :)
I recently visited Bangkok, Thailand last week March 10-17, 2023 and I targeted mainly to take photos and streetfoods. I fell in love with the Thai foods, it's closely similar in Filipino foods. When you're in a western country and some white person goes "konnichiwa" to you because you look Asian and that's the only Asian word they know, that IS racist and/or ignorant. What a stupid comparison.
Try knowing the language and looking non-asian. I wonder how many times non-asians that can speak Asian languages like me gets told "no Engrish" in a lifespan

@@dallymoo7816 It's funny because she didn't think there would be MODERN amenities in Thailand. Was she shocked there were cars and skyscrapers too? Like jeez. Half the tourists coming to Southeast Asia seem to be expecting mud huts and spears or somthing and complain about places being "westernized" when they see people with smartphones, or in this case... pizza. Like hello. It's 2019.

I love what he said about Soul Searching, I find that a lot of people will move all over the world just "because" but not really have a reason or a connection. I personally think having a connection and knowledge of a place you're moving to is VERY important.
Hella miss living in Thailand ! I hung with the tourists there ! So easy to reach out to the locals and everyone in the country seemed so polite to me ! Such a privilege as a foreigner to receive all the benefits in the country !
I'm from Malaysia , and I have respect for Thailand who impose strict visa and business laws from expats , who wants to preserve their own local culture and people in general, unlike here in Malaysia .

As an Indian, I have been to thailand few times but for short stays of 5 days or so only. Still i have fallen in love with the culture, the folk music and the language which i can read, write and speak to good extent. Learning on my own remotely. But i not too fond of thai people as they are not too fond of us 😁 but besides that i love everything thai...especially music. I do have a few good thai friends though and they are fantastic
I'm just here for the comments and not surprise at all to see stereotypical comments like "they looking for a bang in Bangkok lmao" or "for creep old paedophiles from the west, it must be a heaven on earth!" and etc. You're already doing great trying to learn about other cultures online through Asian Boss channel, but do yourself a favor man - you are already half-way there, now just go outside of your room or comfort zones and actually explore those destinations first and widen your perception.

Ive been to Thailand 4 times now and im always sad and depressed whenever i have to go back home i never had that with any other country in the world i visited ever.
I think that basicly sums up what most people have with Thailand its a unique place and Bangkok is like no other city on the planet like that woman said its addictive ! .

Good for Thailand when it comes to foreigners learning their language, in the Philippines we please foreigners by bending our tongues and be on the same level when it comes to speaking English even if in the first place we as locals shouldn't put more effort on doing that, they are tourist they must put effort on learning our native language.
They could barely speak Thai.. lol
I just moved to Malaysia 3 months ago. I have been studying Malay on my own with books. but to be honest, I have 5 young children and have no time or babysitter to watch them so I can attend a formal class. I would LOVE it if I had a Malay friend to learn the spoken language. I rent malay books from the library to read to my children, but I am not sure I am pronouncing the words correctly.
It is very hard to learn a language if you don't have a close local friend. 😑

I’m Thai and I see Venezuela as beautiful latino girls country. Lol 😂 it’s all because there were many beautiful woman from Venezuela who won Miss universe or at least being in a top 5 or 10 in these kind of competition.
Try to learn thai language from internet and see if you like it. You need to use it at some point if you work here, especially in tourist business.

I have 3 young police officers in my family - I want to learn Thai and they want to learn English, English will help them with their careers. Plus they love my swimming pool. Thailand is incredible. But I live up North.

I love Thailand. It is getting harder now, for farangs, due to the visa situation constantly changing. Thailand has a bit of a reputation for red light district type things, but the country is far more than that. The people are kind, warm and genuine. The scenery is absolutely breath taking. The markets are a fun time to just walk around and enjoy all the fresh food and street food.

There aren't many foreigners in Jakarta. Most of them it seems are Japanese, Indians, Koreans, and Arabs with good jobs or businesses. They live in a upper middle class bubble so I doubt it would be that interesting seeing what they say.

I wish Im like the guys saying the live in Thailing for 20+ years omg, that would be my dream coming true. Lived in SEA for total of 6 months and felt like 2 years and will always remember this experience .
I recall when I was a kid, my dad told me we were about to migrate to Bangkok because he was about to be relocated there with his work. I don't know why it didn't happened.
