Very nice demo! I have the roughneck in .45 and .45 long colt with .410 and finally the .357 mag with .38 spl
I have it in 9mm. It's a fun little gun. I keep mine in my pocket when I'm working. A full size or compact gets in the way when working. And makes a neat backup pocket pistol
The one thing I didn't hear in the video was the noting that the sites are aligned to the bottom barrel. The top barrel will hit about 4 inches above the bottom. (depending on distance.)
I just picked mine up yesterday.
And man im so impressed with it! And the new one has a built in ejector now. I cant wait to go and fire it!!

Very much enjoyed your review! Today I installed some wood grips. They’re a bit wider than the rubber, a little bit more in your hand. Felt recoil is less.

I have 45lc/410 derringers strategically located and hidden both downstairs and upstairs in my house. This enables me to always have a gun nearby when my other home defense guns aren't nearby. I like using my double barrell over/under and side by side shotguns as my regular home protection guns.

I’ve got two in 45/410 a 31/2 and a 6 in and a 357 barrel . I like them a lot , the new trigger though I think makes them look cheap .
I have the 3 1/2 inch rowdy. I was told to use 3 inch shells for the 00 buck.

The thing is that you can buy that version and then purchase barrels that have the ejector if you wish. Also i've seen on several videos do not Cycle this weapon without a empty cartridge in the chambers. This is clearly said in the instructions. But every one of these videos I see them doing it. The brass absorbs a major portion of the impact of the hammer striking the pin. Or you can just buy new pins when those start to stick from a mushroom top and you miss fire.

You shoot and handle this pistol very well unlike some of the crybaby men who say it hurts their hand
As this is a 3 yards or less gun, a high caliber load isn’t necessary. One of the seldom mentioned benefits of this design, if you reload you can download to reduce recoil. You can also use inexpensive (at least it used to be) steel or Aluminum cased ammo.
I think the problem is men have bigger hands so the trigger guard bashes their finger, but the trigger guard can be removed.
Beautiful gun. I don't know if my experience is unique or if others have experienced problems with the gun failing to fire. I have tried 410, 45 LC and 357 (different barrels). Regardless of what ammo I used, I consistently had misfires. The firing pin don't always hit the primer. This is terrible for personal protection. I contacted Bond Arms. Thier recommendation was to buy different ammo. I don't know what part of the firing pin not striking the primer they don't understand. Arrrg.
Good review. I own the 410/45LC and love it. I carry it always in my car using their little OWB holster - sometimes even outside the car with bulky clothing as it conceals well. I liked your choices in ammo.
I’ve come to really appreciate the plain ole Aguila 45 Long Colt Ammo 200 Grain Round Nose Flat Point. It shoots like a 22 in this little pistol. I’m not sure how effective it is as an actual self defense round but seems accurate enough and the Rowdy is never the only gun I’m carrying but might be the easiest to reach especially in the car.
The self defense round I sometimes carry is the BARNES VOR-TX 45 COLT AMMO 200 GRAIN XPB HOLLOW POINT LEAD-FREE. Wowzers 😳 serious recoil but in practicing with it I’ve learned to somewhat manage the recoil. I’m 6’5 with larger hands so learning and habituation a proper grip on this little gun was key as it kept smashing my knuckles. I’ve gotten past that now with technique. Anyway whatever ones self defense round or however expensive I’d recommend practicing with it - I’m a new shooter and that’s helped but still serious recoil. I’m like ...please don’t make me shoot you with this. 😳
The .410 personal defense ammo I’ve tested is the WINCHESTER PDX1 410 GAUGE 2 1/2" 3 DISKS OVER 1/4 OZ BB BONDED - also very serious recoil but I like the pattern at short distances. Very powerful 💥 and destructive round at short distances and slightly less than the Barnes hollow points. I’ve used one other round a Winchester 3” round bird shot (not recommended in my 2 1/2 inch barrel) accidentally several times basically because I though it would be mild and a great spread. It was not mild worst recoil of all I’ve tried. It was Winchester something ...I don’t recall.
Love this pistol and loved your review my main problem is finding ammo, which is probably not uncommon these days.
I find the 410 with #4 buck performs much nicer that 00 or 000 buck.

I have the .410 w/4" barrel.
I made a full size set of grips out of 5/16 birch ply that I can shoot with all day.
Use sand loads to kill wood bees around my barn. Shoot 000 buck for fun on my range. Not a good carry gun unless you got nothing else.
Love shooting odd s and ends loads to include darts and dowels in various configurations
I have owned a Defender since 2009. EDC most of the time (excluding trips to blue cities).
Just used it recently for defense against an obviously rabid racoon (its eyes were completely white, no anything, just white!! frightening actually).
I fanned the hammer cowboy style, a super-fast double-tap of Hornaday 45-colt 185 grain FTX critical defense.
Dropped dead in its tracks.
The cops came (small town so only 1 actually came). He called the game warden, so he came. The fire marshall came uninvited, he was bored maybe, listening to the radio? Who knows.
The general consensus was, yup, that racoon has rabies, and now it's dead.
I watch a lot of RUclips videos on guns but I think you are the best host and explain the workings of a gun better than any of them
I bought the .45acp Defender a couple of years ago and gave a big price for it, then took them up on their discount on another set of barrels. Bought a set of longer .357 barrels. Later Traded it off. Just missed it so much I bought the .45 ACP Roughneck this morning and I believe I like it even better for LESS than half the price. You do want your man card paid up to shoot one of these though.
I had the 45 long colt/410 defender and paid around $500 for it. What the difference with the 45 long colt/410 rowdy? It’s priced for about $200 less
What fires first. Top or bottom. Or is it hinged. And varies. Just curious. Great vidio
I have the Rowdy in .45/.410 and the trigger pull is brutal. It won't fire cowboy action loads and the grips broke after 12 shots. It has been 100% reliable with .410 loads and Hornady Critical Defense .45 rounds.
I appreciate the 7.5 lb trigger pull because it gives me confidence when pocket carrying that I won't accidentally pull the trigger. I haven't had a grip issue .. but I am carving my own custom grips because of large hands.

I watched a bond arm tips videos and they say to hold onto the grips a little lower and your hand doesn’t absorb as much recoil ! You see most people holding high on the grips thinking that’s better but there designed to be held lower

They are cute as conversation pieces, but for practical use? There are so many higher capacity, more practical reloading, and faster shooting options, same or less weight. Even if someone does not want semi-autos, Ruger LCR is both lighter and thinner, so why would you pick this?
They look cool, definitely a collectors item.
Its what we would call in England "an eccentric" piece. Just for interest. For sure a collector's item, the practicality? I have my doubts.
I like mine .I pack a 9mm or .40 it is a back up gun for me.
I agree with most of the chamberings, with the exception of the .410. I think there are some niche practical purposes for the .410. Pest control (snakes and rodents with large birdshot or small buckshot) and maybe backup or "carjacker defense" with special especially deep-penetrating buckshot, as heavy as you can get in .410. With the 3" barrel I have some doubt even 000 lead buckshot will penetrate adequately. That's only 0.5" of barrel beyond the end of the 2.5" shell. Even rare .40 buckshot loads might not penetrate 12" in gel. If you can handload tungsten buckshot, that would probably penetrate sufficiently even in the short barrels.
It's a very close-range weapon, but the potential of 3-5 .36 (000) or .40 caliber round balls per shot is attractive. If you are able to obtain loads that penetrate sufficiently out of your barrel length, you'll have a gun with considerably more stopping power than any handgun similar size and recoil. I don't think a single-action steel-frame derringer is a good general choice for defense, but if your requirement is only one or two very powerful shots out of a very small gun at a target at arm's length then this fits the bill. It has a very small niche where it's sensible for defensive use. It has broader appeal as a pest animal dispatcher, being a small handgun chambered for a shotgun round.
Handy. Killed a few copperheads berry picking with 6 shot 410.. and I sure wouldn't want to be hit in the chest with the triple 0 buck load at 4 or 5 yards. I guess they have their place.. easier to carry than my .357 with 6 inch barrel and easier to kill a snake with. Just my two cents...
I cringe every time I see someone snap a pistol back together. Probably does not hurt the derringers but again , respect the weapon. Revolvers you can damage them by doing it.

I suspect the short barrels on Bond Arms derringers, or any derringer, are too short to allow expansion of these defensive rounds. Without the speed necessary for the bullet to expand calibers like 9mm are worthless.
I'd love to see some ballistics gel tests to see if there's enough umph out of the short barrels to achieve expansion in the various calibers that require expansion to be viable for defense.
I'm not even sure if my Bond Arms Bond Girl Mini in .357 magnum will expand but it has the best chance of any of them I'd guess. If expansion can't be achieved the best bet would be the tried and true combination of big heavy bullets travelling slower.
As far as Bond Arms quality goes it's the best in the business. BA makes the best derringers in the world bar none. My only issue with them was the Gen I trigger (like mine) is truly horrible. Almost unusable horrible. I don't have the extra $125+ to upgrade it to a Gen II so it almost never gets shot. That's a shame because Bond Arms derringers are excellent guns. If you want a derringer then you should look to Bond Arms first.
Given that they weigh 20oz, if you want to shoot 9mm you're better off with a "micro-compact" 9mm semi-auto for similar weight, or even a lightweight S&W AirLite or Ruger LCR revolver.
I think these Bond derringers only make sense at all in .410, and even then only for pest control or with very special defensive loads for maximum penetration. I have reservations that even the best commercial 000 buck will penetrate adequately into a human body with less than an inch of barrel. 3" chamber, 2.5" shell! Bond makes longer battles, but these short ones really struggle with velocity and penetration. I don't know if it's still imported, but NobelSport used to make .40 buckshot defensive loads, which is larger than 000 and the maximum caliber that will fit in a .410 shell. If I recall correctly, they fit one less pellet than the Federal 000 usually recommended for .410 handgun self-defense. The .40 lead buckshot might just penetrate adequately. But I'm not sure. I wouldn't carry one of these without at least observing a ballistics gel test to know it would penetrate adequately. You've only got two shots, so they need to count.
However, there is something that will probably work out of these short barrels: heavier-than-lead shot. It's expensive, and you'd probably have to handload, but some big tungsten buckshot pellets would probably penetrate very well even out of a 3" .410 barrel. Three or four deep-pentrating 000 or .40 balls in a single shot is a level of stopping power unlike any other pistol short of _much_ larger .410 revolvers and big bore magnums.
I've shot 230g hollow point 45acp rounds from a 2" barrel Roughneck into a 50lb cube of clay and seen impressive bullet expansion. Scary expansion. A real stopper.

For the price they want for a 3 inch barrel,$160.00+taxes+FFL transfer,you wait and get one of these during the Black Friday sales for about $285.00 out the door.Bond Arms used to sell you the barrel from the factory,but now they only ship a barrel to an FFL.That's about the craziest thing I've ever heard......But these are still badass little pocket shotguns.
I was told the sales thru authorized dealers only, provides an iota of legal protection for Bond Arms.
So the main difference between the two guns is the extraction system other than the caliber that are available?

Real similar to my Snake Slayer. It is too big to carry for defense, and no one would take it into the field. For me it is a plinker for outings with my children. If I was a gambler in Deadwood, it might be different.
Shot one in .45acp, most uncomfortable gun I ever fired. Call me a pansy but its odd pointy edges made it feel like firing a gun with a dull axe head as a grip.
I heard way to many complaints of the plastic handles breaking off. Right off the box while dry fire in some cases.
They are not supposed to be dry fired in the first place.

That's exactly why I got mine...I put a CCI or bird shot in one barrel for snakes and something heavier in the other barrel. It's a great peace of mind.

I've loved big-bore derringers since I had an old German-made twin-barrel .38 back in the 1980s. These, even being budget models, are still much better quality than those days.

Nah. I'll pass. Too expensive, limited capacity, not really small. And ugly too. Id rather have Taurus 856revolver. Cost $275 new, just as small, six shot, shoots 38 plus p an comes in many color options. Also super reliable. Taurus really stepped up their game with revolvers. Don't know why any one would want that thing

It most have a very hard trigger pull is much as Kristin was adjusting her grip. Maybe in 22 mag. but other than that I'll pass.
the trigger pull is not like most guns, you don't pull back. pull more DOWN like a pivot point. otherwise it will seem like a 25lb trigger, but once you know it is easy.
Buying a derringer this week. 22mag or 38sp....save on ammo and still be able to Shoot

the grips have a flaw! could break and fall off anytime!! mine did 2days after i purchased it, plastic inside not strong enough for recoil, made in china i suspect, no good!!
