I still say Vince Russo's the worst WCW World Heavyweight Champion. David Arquette was a poor choice to give him the title but he gave all the money he earned to the families that had died (Owen Hart, Brian Pillman, Bobby Duncum Jr., Brian "Mark Curtis" Hildebrand) & Darren "Droz" Drozdov who had been paralyzed. Russo on the other hand, he couldn't give two shits.
Everything about David winning the belt was just awful. Even David himself spoke out saying that he never wanted the title in the 1st place. Saying it hurt the legit talent on the roster and also devalued the title. David is a wrestling fan so he was also upset over the movie and the fact that it made his lead character seem like the dumbest guy ever. And also made every wrestling fan in the movie look like complete idiots. Leave it to WCW while Russo was in charge to think it would be a great idea to make a movie that basically calls out all the fans for being brainless idiots.

I remember I saw Goldberg had an interview about that limo segment (with Ben Stein of all people) saying that he had a pipe to break the windows but when he was running over to the limo he dropped it and he didn't want to stop to pick it up. I remember if you watch the full segment you can actually see him drop the pipe.
Its funny that having Tank Abbott win the world title was too ridiculous and cost Russo his job, but David Arquette getting it instead was perfectly fine. I get this was because of Ready to Rumble not being much of a success but HOW FUCKING BAD must Russo's ideas have been backstage (the ones that didn't end up on TV) that an MMA fighter being the champion put him over the edge?
Bubba Sawyer. Mike Awesome had an amazing run in ECW but failed in WCW for the same reason Taz had an amazing run in ECW but failed in WWE. The undercard would compete against each other for the chance to prove themselves worthy where you could build new heels and faces.
Scott Steiner would do that on commentary because he knew he was untouchable. He was huge, had "good" matches, and he was there to fill in the hole that goldberg left with his injury. They couldnt fire him, or so he thought

The fact was, a lot of the music used in the company was just stock Turner themes that they'd use on things like the basketball highlights. Amazing that they had Jimmy Hart backstage in that company, and he was only asked to make a handful of themes.
In my mind I travel to different realities where they booked everything to perfection. Sting beat Hogan and NWO. Nash and Hall Fueded. No finger poke of doom. Bretts WCW championship run was the stuff of legends

So glad I got to see a dozen live shows between Nitros Thunders and Raws back in the mid-late 90s, culminating in my only PPV I saw in person and that was SummerSlam’99. Great memories seeing absolute legends in all promotions

Jay Hunter once said it best, anyone can cut a shoot promo (which is all Douglas did) but can you cut a good kayfabe promo (which Flair was one of the greatest of all time)?
It's been a million years so it seems pointless to bring this up now, but shitty announcing was responsible for the KOTR briefcase angle being a "mystery." The stip for the match specifically said no corporate members could interfere or else Vince and Shane would be DQed, so the week before the PPV they did an angle where Boss Man got "kicked out" of the corporation. On the Raw after the PPV they just welcomed him back with open arms, but the announcers basically no-sold it, never explaining it to the fans, and it was never brought up on TV again so we were left to figure it out for ourselves, and alot of people just didn't get it. All it would have taken was a few words from JR, like "So that's why they kicked him out, those no good so-and-so's!" or whatever, and there never would have been a "mystery" at all... That's why good announcing is so important!
I knew I liked OSW from the moment I started watching but I actually fell off my chair with tears in my eyes at the Ian Paisley joke, and it got no less funny from then out. Bravo lads!
It was more then implied that it was Bossman. There was a stip no one in the corporation could interfere, they fired Bossman, someone lifts the briefcase, next night on Raw Vince, Shane and the rest celebrate while Bossman comes down pissed, and then they laugh and hug. So many times I hear wrestling fans ask for subtlety but this was subtle enough and still everyone says its a freaking mystery. Drives me mad
2000 WCW is a who's Who's of boys. You can fill a whole stable with these fellas. Shane Douglas, Mike Awesome and Vampiro are probably my top 3 out of this show

Man, their way out of the Arquette angle could have been that the referee made an error, and David Arquette never actually won the belt. That way, he gets in the papers for a few days, but doesn't tarnish the belt's history and the strap defaults back to DDP. They could even show highlights of that match to prove neither he, nor Bischoff, were the legal men. So nobody could say they were retconning a mistake in booking

Watching WCW die was a trip 20 years ago and it makes me realize how great it was before Russo wanted to pull back the curtain. Most people who were watching knew it was staged but we didn't want to hear that during the show. We just wanted to watch and see matchups.
This happened in Syracuse? Jeez I live half an hour away from Syracuse, WCW must've really been desperate for booking arenas to tape a Thunder there not to mention having a title change, usually Albany gets the tv airings and Syracuse gets the house shows.
The whole thing was poorly planned from top to bottom and totally unnecessary. Even Bret admitted that he nearly crashed the car and complained to Russo about "being a wrestler, not a stuntman". Russo's writing was garbage and put everyone in bad spots.
Love you shows mates, you are brilliant at pointing out storylines that goes tits up. Makes a big difference with reviewers who are legit fans of wrestling.

Good god WCW was shit in it's last two years or so. So convoluted and hard to follow. Russo was probably on loads of coke. I'm glad you guys covered this. Some might just blow it of as, "yeas, WCW turned to shit" but it's good for a laugh. I actually went to the WCW bar and grill back in 99. Looking back on it, I don't know how I feel about that anymore. The "Goldburger" gave me terrible shits the next day.

I had a hardcore WCW mark for a friend back in 2000, and he was really disappointed in how things were going in the company. He claimed that if WCW didn't knock it out of the park on the reboot episode of Nitro, he was done. Fucker came online five minutes after Nitro went off the air claiming it was the best episode ever.
But what if... We gave him a bus... And made him obsessed with the 70s and fat chicks? I'd say that's worth one million... Or at least the price of the bus.
Eh, I would disagree. The lads mention in one of the One Night Stand reviews that ECW was already on its last legs, Awesome just left a sinking ship like any reasonable person would if they wanted to put food on the table. Once Heyman stopped being able to pay the talent, all bets were off.
Growing up in Los Angeles I missed out on most of WCW until I joined the Navy in '95. I think my first exposure was a classmate bringing over WCW vs The World (PSX)!

If it wasn't the Fingerpoke of Doom or Eric Bischoff giving away the results of Raw (with Foley's win being the clincher) that sealed it for WCW, then it was giving the heavyweight championship to David Arquette. It's hard to imagine a single wrestler not being pissed off about it, including DDP.

I'm a huge wwf/wwe fan and enjoyed wcw before raw would start but I remember when David was on wcw and I kept turning the channel back and forth from raw to nitro to see if David would win as a kid I was stoked thinking wow anyone can win the world heavyweight championship yeah it might not have been a good choice but I bet a lot of people wanted it to happen
I do give Arquette credit as of today though. He actually is wrestling on the indys. Most of the matches are hardcore matches and he even almost died when he took a light tube to the face and it sliced his throat really bad. I saw him at a local NEW show in Connecticut where he took some rough bumps. He turned heel on Jerry Lawler and it actually was entertaining.

As bad as the White Hummer angle was, it actually started months before Russo got to WCW.
Mike Awesome was awesome, also on the mic, the guy was incredibly underrated.

The Cat was actually pretty good. I hated him as a kid though. Muta was one of many stars who was tasty like shit by WCW though.

So glad I got to see a dozen live shows between Nitros Thunders and Raws back in the mid-late 90s, culminating in my only PPV I saw in person and that was SummerSlam’99. Great memories seeing absolute legends in all promotions

It's been a million years so it seems pointless to bring this up now, but shitty announcing was responsible for the KOTR briefcase angle being a "mystery." The stip for the match specifically said no corporate members could interfere or else Vince and Shane would be DQed, so the week before the PPV they did an angle where Boss Man got "kicked out" of the corporation. On the Raw after the PPV they just welcomed him back with open arms, but the announcers basically no-sold it, never explaining it to the fans, and it was never brought up on TV again so we were left to figure it out for ourselves, and alot of people just didn't get it. All it would have taken was a few words from JR, like "So that's why they kicked him out, those no good so-and-so's!" or whatever, and there never would have been a "mystery" at all... That's why good announcing is so important!
I knew I liked OSW from the moment I started watching but I actually fell off my chair with tears in my eyes at the Ian Paisley joke, and it got no less funny from then out. Bravo lads!

It was more then implied that it was Bossman. There was a stip no one in the corporation could interfere, they fired Bossman, someone lifts the briefcase, next night on Raw Vince, Shane and the rest celebrate while Bossman comes down pissed, and then they laugh and hug.
So many times I hear wrestling fans ask for subtlety but this was subtle enough and still everyone says its a freaking mystery. Drives me mad

2000 WCW is a who's Who's of boys. You can fill a whole stable with these fellas. Shane Douglas, Mike Awesome and Vampiro are probably my top 3 out of this show

Man, their way out of the Arquette angle could have been that the referee made an error, and David Arquette never actually won the belt. That way, he gets in the papers for a few days, but doesn't tarnish the belt's history and the strap defaults back to DDP. They could even show highlights of that match to prove neither he, nor Bischoff, were the legal men. So nobody could say they were retconning a mistake in booking

Watching WCW die was a trip 20 years ago and it makes me realize how great it was before Russo wanted to pull back the curtain. Most people who were watching knew it was staged but we didn't want to hear that during the show. We just wanted to watch and see matchups.
This happened in Syracuse? Jeez I live half an hour away from Syracuse, WCW must've really been desperate for booking arenas to tape a Thunder there not to mention having a title change, usually Albany gets the tv airings and Syracuse gets the house shows.

The whole thing was poorly planned from top to bottom and totally unnecessary. Even Bret admitted that he nearly crashed the car and complained to Russo about "being a wrestler, not a stuntman". Russo's writing was garbage and put everyone in bad spots.
Flair's promo was just so entertaining and funny one of my faves too.

I actually went to the WCW bar and grill back in 99. Looking back on it, I don't know how I feel about that anymore. The "Goldburger" gave me terrible shits the next day.

I had a hardcore WCW mark for a friend back in 2000, and he was really disappointed in how things were going in the company. He claimed that if WCW didn't knock it out of the park on the reboot episode of Nitro, he was done.
Fucker came online five minutes after Nitro went off the air claiming it was the best episode ever.
I like Mike Awesome, I enjoy his matches, but in no uncertain terms is he worth one million US dollars

Eh, I would disagree. The lads mention in one of the One Night Stand reviews that ECW was already on its last legs, Awesome just left a sinking ship like any reasonable person would if they wanted to put food on the table. Once Heyman stopped being able to pay the talent, all bets were off.

Growing up in Los Angeles I missed out on most of WCW until I joined the Navy in '95. I think my first exposure was a classmate bringing over WCW vs The World (PSX)!

But people won't be able to see Batista, considering how he's perfected the technique of standing so perfectly still that he becomes invisible.
If it wasn't the Fingerpoke of Doom or Eric Bischoff giving away the results of Raw (with Foley's win being the clincher) that sealed it for WCW, then it was giving the heavyweight championship to David Arquette. It's hard to imagine a single wrestler not being pissed off about it, including DDP.

I'm a huge wwf/wwe fan and enjoyed wcw before raw would start but I remember when David was on wcw and I kept turning the channel back and forth from raw to nitro to see if David would win as a kid I was stoked thinking wow anyone can win the world heavyweight championship yeah it might not have been a good choice but I bet a lot of people wanted it to happen

I do give Arquette credit as of today though. He actually is wrestling on the indys. Most of the matches are hardcore matches and he even almost died when he took a light tube to the face and it sliced his throat really bad. I saw him at a local NEW show in Connecticut where he took some rough bumps. He turned heel on Jerry Lawler and it actually was entertaining.
