written by Rev, played and recorded by Mike Portnoy, a perfect person to help drive the band forward after that awful time. Similar style, and in fact Mike was one of Jimmy's influences.
Carter Buchanan What all drummers before and after being on a drum kit. helps warm up as well as easier to figure out a beat. Being behind a big drum kit can be intimidated for most drummers as well as a safe guard in live performances :)
Technically every drum track on Nightmare was written by the Rev, since they demoed all the songs with the Rev before going in to the studio and him dying. Mike Portnoy is awesome, of course.
+Rustin Pickup Just to make a clarification, Jimmy only did demos on some of the tracks like Nightmare and Buried Alive. Portnoy did the official drum tracks that was mixed with the album. Portnoy did indeed tour throughout the second half of 2010.
I'm pretty sure the only songs that use Jimmy's drumming on nightmare are Fiction and Buried Alive. The rest of it was planned by Jimmy, revised by Portnoy, and recorded by Portnoy
Okay, Mike Portnoy recorded the drums to this track, the drums you hear now, and in the song. The Rev had what he wanted the drums to sound like, recorded with basic mics, a draft of what it would become if you will, then Jimmy's untimely death before the drums could be properly finished and recorded. Leaving Mike Portnoy to finish the song, you can find the rev's version of the song, and his draft and the final version sound very similar.
The rev recorded all nightmare demos with a electric drum set and Mike portnoy recorded the album, you can hear the rev drum track of nightmare on "nightmare demo version" this is the track of the album recorded by Mike its played different on some parts (verse chorus, and the use of the ride bell om some parts) im a drummer i know what i tell you ;) THIS IS MIKE NOT JIMMY
I'm just obsessing over A7X and the Rev wrote it and I know Mike Portnoy does the recording for the album, but Jimmy played the drums to the songs live.
Nono, the Rev didn´t use the octobans. And Portnoy said it in a interview as well. He only added his stuff to Jimmy´s just to have this wibe of his. He fully respected Jimmy´s writings, but added his fills just to "finish" these songs totally.
Well, I´ve gave it a shot and listened more carefuly to Blinded in Chains and the only thing I´ve heard was that brutal high pitched snare Jimmy used. No octobans. I never heard any A7X song with octobans until Nightmare which were Portnoy´s octobans. I don´t know man, I don´t want to argue in any ofensive way but I think Rev didn´t use octobans.
Interesting note here is that portnoy plays triplets during the fast intro, whereas the rev played quadruplets on the demo. The revs playing was slightly faster. It's not really noticeable without slowing it down, but interesting
dud look the demo version of this song that's Rev's version cause this song was still a demo when he was alive, but when he passed portnoy took over and couldn't play what Rev wrote so he had to shorten it up man
Its all because he played drums longer, listen to some of the songs on the album rev was alive before e died dumbass and listen to the demo vetsion and the actual version that portnoy made, cause the rev played the deo version and sounds crazier then portnoys version fuck tard
The rev did demos for all the songs in nightmare but after revs dead mike followed revs work and did all the official parts ! :/ ps sorry my bad English x (
both amazing drummers...of course portnoys drumming is better he is much older..but it shouldnt be about technicality .....more about feel...and both these drummers have that
precisely what recca said + gate on each mic to reduce noise from other drum elements on other mics, oh and you can defenitly feel the portnoy thing in them, plus if they were programed the double bass parts and the intro fill parts would have been more accurate, this is human no doubt...
i don't know for you guys but, to me, it sound seems like "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" (on eq terms). Anyways, one thing is true: this is human and this is Portnoy!!
***** This is REAL DRUMMING, but fake samples of real drums and bad reverb. The fact that the note durations in the generic intro drum fills are not really even done right and 'clunkily' is how you know it's real
same reason i think that paul gilbert shouldnt do every solo lol...as an accomplished guitar player you guys need to sit down and just listen...why is it the drummers are always the drama queens lol
written by Rev, played and recorded by Mike Portnoy, a perfect person to help drive the band forward after that awful time. Similar style, and in fact Mike was one of Jimmy's influences.
the echo of the snare Is AWESOME!!! portnoy is sick!!!
That snare though
DAT SNAR DO
TheFourBrothers18 If you translate your comment it's hilarious
Terry Chapman hahaha
+BlackLight exe I can tell it's Mikes snare because if you hear any other drum track of a7x the snare has a lot higher of a pitch
@@quartratic2389 he also likes his snare wires loose. He's said it before in kit tours
No matter what The Rev will forever be my favorite drummer and well.... Favorite person ever hehe
I'd sell my soul to play this part perfectly. 3:33
ehill1536 Same :)
I can do it 😊
Caden Ringling Awesome :3
+Caden Ringling it's not that hard I learned it a this whole song a week after it came out
+ehill1536 Actually really easy with practice.
I air drum a lot even though I have like a 4,000 dollar kit
It's a good way to practice when you're not at your drums
Nice way to say that you are rich
Lemme have it
Carter Buchanan What all drummers before and after being on a drum kit. helps warm up as well as easier to figure out a beat. Being behind a big drum kit can be intimidated for most drummers as well as a safe guard in live performances :)
Carter Buchanan Air drumming helps me warm up before a gig. I also car drum.
Technically every drum track on Nightmare was written by the Rev, since they demoed all the songs with the Rev before going in to the studio and him dying. Mike Portnoy is awesome, of course.
I like how the drumsticks in the picture makes a mathematic symbol to show who is greater.
Shame they are the wrong way round.
@@bigwoop8151 theyre both good
How dare you... Both great drummers, both great composers, both with big efforts and influences in their projects. Both great persons
They should form the = sign
I wonder how the rev would have done it beyond the demo phase..
Good Job Mike...!
I'm a true A7X fan and DT fan and I know this is Portnoy's drumming.
Rustin Pickup The demo for this song has the rev's track on it.
+Rustin Pickup Just to make a clarification, Jimmy only did demos on some of the tracks like Nightmare and Buried Alive. Portnoy did the official drum tracks that was mixed with the album. Portnoy did indeed tour throughout the second half of 2010.

this is Mike Portnoy the rev had a louder tin can like snap on his snares
+Tyler J wow you guys really know your drums, but now that you mention it you're 100% right
I've got the vocal track, and this playing at the exact same time. Perfection :D Everything is in sync :D
The Rev wrote the drums! Mike Portnoy recorded them :) A7X Family
im a drummer and play this song frequently but this will help me get it just right, thanks for posting, great video!
3:32 is so f*cking awesome!!!!
well...AIR DRUMMING TIME
Okay, Mike Portnoy recorded the drums to this track, the drums you hear now, and in the song. I'm pretty sure the rev did this drum track and mike did the rest, but mad respect for mike for sticking to what the rev wrote :)
Amazing.....
Awesome! :) It's gonna be so much more easy to learn this song on drums now!
☜☠☞ foREVer ☜☠☞
you copied that...
Awesome!!! Thanks for uploading this! :)
For the bass drum on the solo, I use a combination of the Heel-Toe and the Slide technique.
This is Mike Portnoy (:

Jimmy wrote the song, and Mike drummed it
Lushía V
This is Mike Portnoy you noob
Lushía V This is Mike Portnoy
This is Patrik
I love Rev's middle finger on his left hand :D
-foREVer The Reverend-
the rev and aaronn kitcher are my favorite drummers
so catchy....
Nice
Does listening to the Rev's drumming make everybody feel happy inside? Or is it just me?
This is Portnoy.
But the rev wrote it ^
***** He said when "listening" to the Rev's drumming, dimwit.
She* lol
I'm just obsessing over A7X and the Rev wrote it and I know Mike Portnoy does the recording for the album, but Jimmy played the drums to the songs live.
The Rev did NOT do the official tracks for any song on this album. He did however record the demo for the single.
This is written the rev which has been modified and played Mike Portnoy version, and original the rev version in the Nightmare demo
I love that's snare😁😁
Good
Great feet awesome stuff
did the rev play octobans? I know portnoy does and you hear several octoban fills in this.
Nono, the Rev didn´t use the octobans. And Portnoy said it in a interview as well. He only added his stuff to Jimmy´s just to have this wibe of his. He fully respected Jimmy´s writings, but added his fills just to "finish" these songs totally.
Adrian Blacknoon i think he did in the studio but not live, listen to blinded in chains
The fill after the bass solo sounds like octobans to me, and don't worry I wasn't arguing :)
No, but I do think he had a smaller tom he used on his original drum track, like an 8" or maybe 9".
The rev is the best!
3:41 what's that weird sound?
ni idea pero se escucha mas de una vez ja ja
double kick
esau817 Bass drum triplets.
Actually those are 32nd notes not triplets.
That's right. They are blocks of 1/8 + 4 (1/32). This is faster than I thought.
I like the sound of your drums but can you tell what is the name of your drum kit.
i think it was a DW kit
i noticed that the revs fingure was white
The snair, is he rimshoting or is the head just tuned like that
studio reverb
I dont even play drums and I was air drumming
I don't even air drum and I was playing drums.
this is his best drumming
Kadabra LFC portnoy is still alive.
This is Portnoy's drum track. Also, The Rev's best drumming is all over "City of Evil." That album is absolutely insane on the drums haha
Interesting note here is that portnoy plays triplets during the fast intro, whereas the rev played quadruplets on the demo. The revs playing was slightly faster. It's not really noticeable without slowing it down, but interesting
At 3:32 this shit just got fukkn insane... Gonna snap my damn neck off! damn that is BAD ASS.
i want the save me drum track. that would be sick.
dud look the demo version of this song that's Rev's version cause this song was still a demo when he was alive, but when he passed portnoy took over and couldn't play what Rev wrote so he had to shorten it up man
"couldn't play what the rev wrote"? Dude.. I'm a huge fan of the rev but portnoy is a better drummer
Are u serious man portnoy couldn't even do what rev put on the demo and if u listen to the demo version Revs way better then portnoy
Your opinion..
Frost hatten The rev is a piece of shit compared to portnoy, go listen to any of his drum tracks for dream theater
Its all because he played drums longer, listen to some of the songs on the album rev was alive before e died dumbass and listen to the demo vetsion and the actual version that portnoy made, cause the rev played the deo version and sounds crazier then portnoys version fuck tard
Avenged theater
foREVer !!
DAAAAYYEEEMMM
@3:41 listen closely and you can hear a recording edit fail
like he hit the cymbals a bit
if its in there its supposed to be , these guys pay top pros to do their stuff something like thats easy to change
0:33
Any one know the very first instrument playing?
xylophone.
It's a synthesizer playing bells. 'Synthesized bells'
lots of different tracsk. pianos, xylophones etc
Whoever is playing the second drum track. I like that one better.
East or West REV'z the best!!!!
My God
which program you use to do this?
Download now! :D
The rev did demos for all the songs in nightmare but after revs dead mike followed revs work and did all the official parts ! :/ ps sorry my bad English x (
not all songs from nightmare album
some songs where already recorded with the rev
How can this be The Rev? By hearing the octobans, it's obviously Portnoy, bc on the demo that Jimmy recorded drums for, he didn't play any octobans.
It's damn near close to a gun shot
foREVer
foREVet
Sorry, I want it too, but I can't do it :(
Ficará eternizado em nossos corações...
Right foREVer ~~~~>
This is mike portnoy version

🎶❤
Live foREVer in our hearts jimmy the rev sullivan
What do you call the cymbal stroke he does in the chorus? i really need to learn that.
Polyrhythmic patterns I think
thanks :D
reminds me of something from Radiant Eclipse or System of a Down's Revenga.
Why does the snare have more reverberation at some parts of the song?
Kawani Pi9i It's a scank beat
that were right!
Yes the rev did fiction and he did a bit of nightmare wrote it but obv didnt record it :/
Who was also singing along :D? YOUR FU**ING NIGHTMARE!!
A7X forever is the rev :'(
hes the one you are hearing playing the drums right now
This is mike
The rev made a demo
If you don’t like it listen to the actual song
I am now sad :(
FOREVER JIMMY NIGHTMARE
can someone tell me who was playing what, when? confused.
if it was a drum battle the rev will win
Whos the drummer on the left???
wsl3docmob Mike Portnoy
Happy Birthday to me.
This was uploaded on my birthday..
both amazing drummers...of course portnoys drumming is better he is much older..but it shouldnt be about technicality .....more about feel...and both these drummers have that
stop saying this isn't the rev who's playing it.. it is him, cause everytime fans here it they would think that human beings can't do that
besides, he played metallica's song when he was 10 on a little drum toy set..
jimmy played it at the demo, and portnoy recorded it for the official
Did anyone notice the likes?? (666)
This is portnoy for sure...
it is, Jimmy just wrote it
Dude, this is the drum track from the final recording. Of course it's Portnoy
mike portnoy, one of the best drummers of the world.... DREAM THEATER
i want rev soul
I want the picture on the start of the video because it has color to it and not just White & Black
Sound like programmed drums to me...not the rev or portnoy. no human feel
that because too much Compressors / limiters they use to make drum fit with their music
but I can tell, this is real drum :)
precisely what recca said + gate on each mic to reduce noise from other drum elements on other mics, oh and you can defenitly feel the portnoy thing in them, plus if they were programed the double bass parts and the intro fill parts would have been more accurate, this is human no doubt...

its portnoy playing buddy...go listen to some of his stuff. sounds a lot the same.
Ain't no drummer like jimmy
Pretty sure this is mikes drumming
You all agree gates has a lot harder part for this track right
Speed it up to 1.25x and aron kicher can play it
The rev was dead since 2009 the year
Your point is?
same reason i think that paul gilbert shouldnt do every solo lol...as an accomplished guitar player you guys need to sit down and just listen...why is it the drummers are always the drama queens lol
