From what I’ve seen, and maybe this is just my experience, cheating seems to really damage people in a unique way. While yeah, the fact that someone broke an important vow is upsetting in of itself, I do think there is a sort of ego-damage done by cheating. Because it makes you worried that you weren’t good enough for your partner. That your partner was comparing you unfavorably to the other person. That they never loved you. I just think it’s reductive to say it’s just about a social contract being broken. I think for a lot of people the psychological suffering experienced after being cheated on comes from how it can make you feel insecure, ugly, stupid, unworthy, etc. Even if you know the other person was clearly in the wrong and it wasn’t your fault. For people who are severely traumatized by being cheated on, or who can’t seem to move on from it after a long time, I think it’s a combination of trust issues from betrayal AND the self-esteem insecurity issues Destiny is talking about.

Destinies take on cheating does chafe me in a way. It's not always that deep. Monogamy is a social contract. If you break it, people get pissed.

It is that deep. Cheating drives people insane and breaks their minds. They don’t act like it’s just a simple broken promise. People do want validation from their partners. To feel special and chosen. And we do get jealous and insecure. I’m monogamous and worry about being cheated on. Just own it.
There is nothing wrong with jealousy, there is nothing wrong with wanting validation, there is nothing wrong with craving exclusivity.

Monogamy comes loaded with a lot of expectations. One is that the other person is faithful, so you can place an inordinate amount of trust in them.
You are right. We all want validation. We all want to feel special. But for me, personally, when I've been cheated on, I'm not mad that my validation has been taken away. I'm mad that my trust has been violated.
In the end, i guess this is two sides of one equation. So I can say what rubs me wrong about his take is that it's half baked rather than wrong.
@@dalodulo1373 There’s a lot of ways trust can be grievously betrayed in relationships. From what I’ve seen, and maybe this is just my experience, cheating seems to really damage people in a unique way. While yeah, the fact that someone broke an important vow is upsetting in of itself, I do think there is a sort of ego-damage done by cheating. Because it makes you worried that you weren’t good enough for your partner. That your partner was comparing you unfavorably to the other person. That they never loved you. I just think it’s reductive to say it’s just about a social contract being broken. I think for a lot of people the psychological suffering experienced after being cheated on comes from how it can make you feel insecure, ugly, stupid, unworthy, etc. Even if you know the other person was clearly in the wrong and it wasn’t your fault.
For people who are severely traumatized by being cheated on, or who can’t seem to move on from it after a long time, I think it’s a combination of trust issues from betrayal AND the self-esteem insecurity issues Destiny is talking about.
