Why the second one? People have issues that can not be resolved. Life is not easy. And humans are not peaches to be around. I agree it is not the answer, but why is everyone so willing to say after "I wished I knew, I could have... " NO. Stop lying. When people speak you do not listen and you respond you have your own problems to deal with. Fine. So do not be bothered/affected/sympathetic when I take care of my problems permanently.

@@MarinaArtDesign I see that you're taking this personally. And because of that I really pray that you get through whatever you're going through. Those people around you who ignore you and simply restate their own problems shouldn't do that and should definitely actively listen to how you feel. That being said, it doesn't mean that killing yourself will fix your problems. Trust me, I've been where you've been and life gets very overwhelming. Some people tend to take time for granted and don't realize something until it's too late. But jumping off a bridge isn't the answer. If you reach out for help to the right people, you're bound to rediscover the joys and life and go uphill from there. Keep pushing. I believe in you. :)

@@emblem8018 I asked everyone to help, from local charity and church welfare to president of the government. They all responded they are sorry for my family situation and they hope I will find solution soon. But none of them offered to fix the problem that is easily solvable if they just obeyed their own rules. But since government is falling apart and corruption is everywhere... I have been writing emails from 2007. They always respond " Just one more year, be patient we will work it out" For 13 years they destroyed my physical and mental health and my family with their incompetence. And now covid and losing job and income... I understand what you are saying. It is hard to be on the other side all the time. People selling BS how mothers are great, mother's day BS and all. When do I get my billboard saying a "mother is a monster, pure evil" that try to kill me entire childhood. I know how to survive and be happy. But I can't afford it.

Then some how I saw her PS and it was exactly like mine essay with the same story. Some places had minor changes but she legit copied sentences word by word. I even talked to her before taking any actions yet she’s not willing to change her essay. And when I told my counselor her attitude was literally like "u shouldn’t rlly do anything cuz bad ppl will get punished eventually". I emailed the college and her own hs yet most of them just didn’t respond. It’s rlly sad and surprising to see how not serious they are taking this....

It’s one thing to read sample essays or a good essay and take inspiration from it. By inspiration meaning like how to sound formal, maybe a word choice, adjective, etc. and maybe try to implement something similar into your essay because that is a way you can improve your writing. But it’s another thing to just blatantly plagiarize, and change like one or two sentences. I think there’s a fine line between taking inspiration from a piece of work and plagiarism.

I admire that you chose not to disclose that person's identity, which is something I would do otherwise. The reason being is that I was a victim of plagiarism at one of my classes for my master's. A classmate of mine, asked to read one of my essay assignments before the due date. Without much thinking, also because I was still revising it, I handed them the hard-copy version with my revision notes on. One week after the due date, I was accused of being plagiarism, as the professor received two almost identical essays. However, they chose to believe that I was the one who plagiarized, because that person who had read my work was a US citizen who were born and raised in the US with English being their first and only language, whereas, I'm from a non-English speaking country. Basically, the committee members just didn't believe that a non-native English speaker can have a better grasp of the English language than that of a native speaker, hence, it had to be that I had copied their essay. After a tedious and time-consuming process of submitting evidence, the committee finally believed me. However, they chose and asked me keep silent about this "mishap", as I'm quoting the word used by them, and didn't reprimand that person in any shape or form. I'm talking about no failing for that class or suspension or warning letter. The only they received that was remotely a punishment was zero points for that assignment he plagiarized. That's why I abhor and loathe people who commit or committed such an act. Also that's why I would personally choose to disclose their identity, if it were up to me.

Hi Chloe. I wanted to share with you that aside from English ability or time constraints, a possible catalyst for plagiarism can also be self esteem issues (idk this specific person but I’m just saying in general when people plagiarise essays). I know so many people who binge college YT videos and feel like AOs will be blasé reading your entire life story because everyone else’s seems more interesting than yours. Not to excuse plagiarism in any way, but it seems that that is a mindset issue that needs to change.
I shared your visceral reaction of anger as I watched this video. Writing my common app was an emotionally exhausting difficult experience that required so much thought and soul searching. not to justify his actions AT ALL... but I think this is part of the reason why students should be very apprehensive about posting their college essays to schools they have been accepted (especially well known and sought after schools like UChicago). I’m currently starting my grad school program at UChicago and would be so hurt if my own stories and experiences were taken by someone else. Obviously you can do what you would like on the internet, but I think this is a great example of why sharing admissions essays may not always be smart. Another option is explaining the content of your work without sharing the actual wording and text. Anyways, I hope that kid is denied from every school he applied to because he deserves it!

Plagiarism in college application essays is probably nothing new already for the past 50 years, I'm sure! College admissions officers should install a machine designed to detect similarities in millions of essays that are submitted every year and catch offenders easily!! Perhaps make the applicants sign honor pledges that they didn't cheat with anything on their applications? And even if they cheated, then they would easily fail out of the schools naturally!!!

My University has that, it's called Blackboard, and it analyzes everything, from phrasing to checking if we have the right references cited. In addition, we have to sign an affidavit stating we did not plagiarize and the work submitted is ours. The percent allowed for similarities may differ from faculty to faculty (mine allowed 20%).
But even so, more often than not, the comission in charge of evaluations turns a blind eye when the % is surpassed, because having a big number of graduates = more funding.
