When I was younger I used to loop In Utero and Nevermind to fall asleep to every night... It was awesome cuz eventually the songs would start showing up in my dreams .. inevitably
I agree. I prefer a few of the older ones, but I prefer most of the newer ones, and the 2013 mastering is better on all tracks. It's always been one of my favorite records, so it's saying a lot when I prefer newer mixes.
Nearvana fans like Rape Me and Heart Shaped Box. Nirvana fans like Very Ape, Scentless Apprentice and Radio Friendly Radio Shifter. The Live and Loud cuts of Radio Friendly and Scentless Apprentice might be the best 2 nirvana recordings of all.
In Utero was the very first original tape I got in my life. My dad bought it for me (surpisingly enough!) and it was a boom! I guess he wouldn't have if he had heard it before, in a country where there are so few rock lovers and at a time when most rock and meta bands were satanized by society. I was 11, and Kurt had passed the year before. I still have the tape, but I tried it last year at a cassette player but the tape was quite ruined, unfortunately :(
Bummer the tape is ruined. I have a similar experience with Warrant's Cherry Pie. My dad saw the cover and said he needed to listen to it before I could have it. I would have been 12 or so at the time. He gave it back to me two weeks later, but I know he didn't listen because the first song would have been a major NO. LOL.
Great review. Just picked up this album today. I completely relate to you regarding Nirvana and the so called demise of hair metal. I absolutely loved Motley Crue (Dr. Feelgood album) back in 1989-90 time frame. Bought Decade of Decadence in 1991 and was loving the future kick ass sound of Motley Crue (Primal Scream, Rock n Junkie, Teaser etc) then came Nirvana. Hated Teen Spirit at first, but like you grew to love the album over time. I actually loved it in 1992. Some guy played the new cd all night while we were all waiting in line to buy Genesis tickets over night Thats when I really fell in love with Nirvana.
Long time Nirvana fan......not a big fan of the 2013 release. It's not bad but better than the original?..... seems to be revision history going on. Cobain himself had issues with the initial 'Albini' version which is why he brought Scott Litt/Andy Wallace in and had Bob Ludwig fix things in the mastering. It's an interesting 'raw' take on this album but that doesn't equal better which is what Cobain thought at the time when he listened the 'raw' version. It's lacks subtle polish that the original version had especially in regards to vocals and artistic choices for solos, tones..etc. Bob Lugwig's mastering had a massive impact on the original release.
Good take. I came at this as a lackluster fan of this album to begin with. To me, the 2013 version sounds better and is more enjoyable. That's just my opinion though :)
2013 mix is terrible in my opinion. Not sure why you would change things like solos and taking distortion off the vocals. It's not at all a representation of what was going on. opinion yes.
Nirvana wanted to make a few changes to Steve [Al Beenie's] mix; Geffen wanted many changes. BTW, my favorite song was written and performed by Steve Albini with one of his old bands.
grew up on nirvana, older brother/car radio tapes, dont listen to them often these days but when i do its still good, never was much a fan of in utero, like heart shaped box but only the video, scentless a. and serve the s. are the only tracks i listen to, for me bleach and also incesticide are best, nevermind is great too but style wise already diffrent, songs like hairspray queen etc will be forever what nirvana is to me
I personally like most of the songs on the 2013 mix better than the original. Also i really love that they gave Serve The Servants a new guitar solo. Not that the original one is bad, i'm just glad to hear something new in a song that i know and love. The only bad moment in the 2013 version is in the song "Frances Farmer Will Have Herr Revenge On Seattle" in the 'guitar solo' starting at 2:30, the second guitar is mixed too loud and sounds like shit honestly.
I thought this was his original mix for the album and they remixed some of it ....realizing this is a 2013 mix wayyy after the fact is kinda disappointing....kinda like George Lucas fucking with Star Wars
In most cases, I would agree, but in this case, the album is much better thanks to Albini's remixing the original tapes. It's by far the best listening experience of the album and breathed new life into the songs. Highly recommended.
There is original release...(1993) the (2013) Mix..(.And the original Steve Albini mix) on the original release. The Steve Albini original mixes of Heart Shaped Box and Pennyroyal Tea (1993) did not get released so they had to get Scott Litt to remix those two singles so there are essentially 3 version of heart shaped box and Pennyroyal Tea !
I’ve been pressing my SG collection super hard and it was necessary (and not TOO difficult) to pass up the 2LP Unplugged and the Live and Loud. There are just too many records coming out right now. I’m making sure to get that STP Purple reissue though.
@@thevinyltruffle I don't have a large SG collection either. Only the two big ones (Super Unkown and Bad Motorfinger). I should get more. STP Purple is a great album (my personal favorite of theirs). I have the MOV pressing of it.
While I loved Nirvana from the beginning, I never liked Smells Like Teen Spirit, and still think it’s one of their weaker tracks - although the Butch Vig mix makes it way better. At that time, I was more into New Order and The Cure, but Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden won me over quickly. Pearl Jam was above-average, but Alice in Chains remains unlistenable to this day. Still like Def Leppard though!
I hate to break this to you but... Nirvana didn't kill glam metal when Nevermind came out. Glam metal was on its last breath about about to flatline on its own account. Gen X was over glam/hair metal and was longing for something new and Nirvana answered that call at exactly the right time.
Nirvana brought the wave that shut down all the hard rock/metal stations and replaced them with Alt Rock/Grunge Rock stations, so yes... as a hard rock/metal fan, Nirvana killed my music by choking off the stations and not giving the bands an outlet to reach their fans.

this was a tough copy to come by. Initially this version of In Utero was released solely on the deluxe cd version of the 20th Anniversary release; This (double) record was released later in the year as a stand alone RSD pressing. I had ordered one, and it too almost a year for my order to be fulfilled... to the best of my knowledge this pressing was as single pressing, and cannot be bought new (unless it's old stock).
