    Love what he described at the end, how William’s new order of things created a huge gap between the nobles and the people that still is something of a thing today. Hadn’t thought of it like that.

      @Private Citizen Who are you referring to? Harthacnut certainly didn't and that's Edwards 'Viking half brother'. Both he and Cnut elevated English and did the opposite of what the bastard duke did, that is settling his own people in English seats. Godwin is just one of the many who were bumped up the rankings higher than their pre Cnut status allowed them.

    I always cheered for Harold to win.
    He was a man to admire, strong and athletic, good looking, and had leadership ability.
    I'm descended from William 1st though, so I feel conflicted.
    I loathe William's spite in the harrying of the north.
    Narcissists still abound in my family, 30+ generations later.

      If he writes the scripts, then He is being selective with the Historical facts, particularly with regard to the Battle of Hastings and the location of that battle.
      I also seem to recollect, him, whilst presenting a Time Team special, sitting on a bench at the road side of a round about at Battle, telling viewers that quite possibibly, Harold may well be buried under said round about! A far cry from the great slab where, in this production, he claims the same circumstance!!!!

    Have been watching quite few 'vids' about the Battle of Hastings recently and there is compelling evidence that the battle was actually fought at Crowhurst, which is about 3 miles south of Battle Abbey. Anyone interested in this should look up Nick Austin and his very extensive research that he & his team have carried out on the battle over the years; it will make you question the standard history books version of events.

    • @steveoshow4832
      @steveoshow4832 4 года назад +4

      swerve1960 totally sold on the Crowhurst theory, has a lot of substance and research backing it up. Grew up in Sussex and the common thread of thought that it was always 'down the road' from Battle not Battle itself. HoweverI don't think English Heritage would ever even open up the conversation, too much invested in the current location.

    1066 The Movie still awaits us. Just imagine though the very best of British actors with a top director...
    Spielberg, Ridley Scott, James Cameron....
    The story itself is so fascinating leading up to the invasion and the battle.
    Deception, intrigue, blackmail, betrayal, bravery, privilege and domination.
    Who could play the characters...?
    Edward The Confessor : Ian McKellon, Michael Gambon, Jeremy Irons, Charles Dance, Hugh Laurie.
    King Harold : Tom Hiddleston, Daniel Craig, Dan Stevens, Christian Bale, Linus Roache.
    William The Conquer : Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Jason Issacs, Rhys Ifans, Damian Lewes.
    In the right hands this would make such a brilliant film.

  • @briansmith9439
    @briansmith9439 4 года назад +12

    "The Normans weren't French at all.." might be true but William had 16 second-great grandparents: 13 were French and 3 were Norman. However 'the Norman invasion of 1066' is much less grating to English sensibilities than "the French invasion of 1066."

    • @merrymachiavelli2041
      @merrymachiavelli2041 4 года назад +4

      Firstly, the fact that the Norman aristocracy was very heavily French is not a secret. Most people with any interest in history know they all spoke French, often married French and that some kings like Richard Lionheart scarcely set foot on England. Secondly, the 'French-ness' of the Plantagenets is one of those facts that pop-history (by English and non-English people alike) play-up when and where it suits them. Scottish, English and French takes on the period all tend to portray the Plantagenets as 'English' in support of different patriotic narratives. Mel Gibson certainly couldn't have indulged his weird anti-English kick so easily if he'd had Edward I and his son speaking French, nor could Joan of Arc be portrayed as a valiant symbol of French nationalism if the Hundred Years War was essentially a French-on-French dynastic squabble.

    • @mangot589

      Merry Machiavelli good points. I believe the aristocracy didn’t even start speaking English in general until Edward III?🤔

    • @bazzatheblue
      @bazzatheblue 4 года назад +2

      I'm English,it doesn't bother me much that some norman/french people invaded a thousand years ago.Yeah culturally they were french and yes maybe bloodwise heavily french but it wasn't a Capet who carried out the invasion.The dukes of Normandy would regularly go to war with the Kings of France and eventually the Normans would lose their power and their native Norman homelands and be left with England,the land they stole in 1066 .

    • @caroliner2029
      @caroliner2029 3 года назад +1

      @brian
      The Normans were distinct from the French, in that the Duchy of Normandy was a vassal of the French king.
      Matilda of Flanders was a granddaughter of the King of France, but the family made a distinction that she was not French, per se.
      Things were a lot more 'tribal' at that time.
      Normans wouldn't have described themselves as French, just as in later centuries Eleanor of Aquitaine didn't consider herself French until she married King Louis.

As the years went by, and Edward and Edith had no children for whatever reason, the knowledge that, were it not for Godwin, Alfred would have been alive to succeed Edward and carry on the House of Wessex, must have made things so much worse.

    William consulted with the Pope and got permission - how much time went by for this? It can be told in a couple seconds, but must have taken ages. The Romans had their signaling system that required visual connection and a courier system. 1066 may not have had that anymore. How did this William-Pope communication work?
    Or did they have some way of telling each other to slow down and wait to get an answer from the Pope?

Alternatively others including the real heir, Edgar Ætheling ended up in Malcolm's (killer of Macbeth) Scotland as his sister was the Queen.
