It was a whole different game within the game! I still remember the fear and dread at the end, waiting on top of the building for that cable car to come, with the (new to me), fast zombies scaling up the drain pipes to kill me! Sure, it was easier on replays, but that first time got my heart and adrenaline going!
Try playing that part doing the gravity gun-only achievement. You can't really fight the zombies unless you haul a bunch of sawblades up there with you. It's very scary.
I had it too, and when I heard Father Gregory, I calmed down very much and when he sent a cradle to me, I prayed that I would meet him as soon as possible
To be fair, there's an underlying element of horror in both half lifes (half lives?); In the first game you start out with an experiment gone wrong, fight through the teleported alien creatures (some of which have assimilated your co-workers) only to discover that the supposed rescue is there to kill you to cover up any evidence. The further you go the more you realize what has been going on on Black Mesa, and finally you are transported to an alien borderworld where you have to face the mastermind of the invasion, only to see your victory snatched away by the real mastermind; the G-Man who has set your path and "recruits" you for future use. In HL2 you see what has happened years later; earth has been conquered, those who have decided to side with the Combine are transformed and have given up their humanity. Now you must face them, a race who's empire is so vast that humanity is just a speck floating in space, a race who's true face we never see but who's presence can be seen not only in the cities, but also in the country side where the sea level has lowered significantly, massacred civilians lied in isolated outposts, etc... Edit: And then theres the Combine architecture, which has, in my opinion, an early 20th century futurism and brutalism feel to it; The buildings are huge, with sharp angles, dimly lit inside and dehumanizing, the biggest example being the Citadel in City 17. This structure isn't only the HQ for Dr Breen and the Combine, but also a factory for their forces, since when you "climb" up to the top you see how they build the gunships, which like many of their tech is a mix of an enslaved race and grafted on cybernetics, as well as seeing what happens to those poor soul unfortunate enough to anger the Combine (they get turned into stalkers). It's a building that has ripped deep into the earth and high into the sky, even piercing other dimension through which they can bring reinforcements or, in Dr Breens case, escape.
@@MrkabratWell, you know, it's not horror anymore, but what kind of oppression or something like that, that is, it's not a frightening atmosphere, but an oppressive one. Definitely one of my favourite parts of any game in general. Getting to ravenholm for the first time was the scariest thing ever. And the thing is doom 3 came around the same time as half life 2 and it tried it's absolute best to be scary only to be beaten by this one simple chapter.... ravenholm
Well it WAS a massive combine invasion, like soldiers were involved not normal Civil Protection and Gordon only had small fire arms and Alyx was afraid that Gordon would die in such a big fight.
@@atlasreborn7221 You mean after he had recently carved a path of bodies AND took down a hunter chopper all by himself? Alyx’s concern is appreciated but unnecessary.
Ravenholm's idea is so good. It uses a familiar and seemingly normal area, a suburban town, blocked off by everyone because everyone there is either dead or a headcrab zombie. as EAS alarms and sirens blare, you have to make it out.
Ravenholm is great for horror cause it doesn't use music to build suspense, it uses the surroundings to scare you. The idea of being in a town that once had humans is creepy, but making it seem like the town has no life adds a whole new factor of horror. Also while walking through you can make out events that happened, like when you first enter you see those pods (idk the name of them :/ ) that release headcrabs and see a body near the building. It paints a picture that this once living town was turned into a living nightmare by the combine, and it honestly still scares me even after playing the chapter. In fact when I played this chapter for the first time, I was surprised to see a human (Father Grigori) still in the town, since the vibes of the town give off a death feel. And I do love the fact that Father Grigori helps you, even if he might of lost his mind just a tiny bit.
I think one of the scary parts about ravenholm isnt that there were once people there but technically there are still people in ravenholm, still alive but feeling excruciating pain under the control of headcrabs, a fate worse than death
I remember being so confused when I first entered Ravenholm since it was so different from the rest of the game the whole experience of being here was both terrifying and amazing like when you find all the impaled bodies on fire while Father Grigori stood above or like when you got the shotgun. Truly this is best horror level in any fps game.
its funny, one night i went to sleep insanely drunk and woke up at around 3 am with this stuck in my head, i didn't even play this game around that time, it was trippy as fck.
