My secret for buying woodworking tools DIRT CHEAP.

My trick for buying good tools at super-low prices is really simple: go to antique car and antique tractor flea markets. These places are mostly filled with car parts, but when a vendor does have woodworking tools, he's usually looking to unload them as fast as possible. Often, car guys don't even know what they have, so woodworkers can score loads of useful or collectible tools for pocket-change. These flea markets are also a great source of consumables like glue, thinners, brushes, and sand-paper. You can stock up on the most expensive stuff for cheap.

It's funny you mention getting cheap things from dead guys because my favorite place to get super cheap tools are from estate sales, i picked up a planer, 12 inch jointer and tablesaw for 150 dollars. Some of these kids should have alittle more respect for their dead fathers possession but their loss i suppose.

God, I'm like a vulture at estate sales. I've bought so much stuff from dead guys that I might as well be an undertaker.

I bought my welding shop from my wife's uncles about 6 years ago. It was full of old tools as they opened the shop after the oldest brother got back from the Pacific in WW2.. I have spent the majority of my life under a welding hood but have also done a lot of woodworking. My Dad was a farmer and fine woodworker as have several generations of my family. His favorite place to be was in front of his lathe. I have tools that have been passed down for 5 generations. My youngest son graduated a luthier this past year and we are building his tool collection at sales and antique stores. We do a lot of woodworking on my Bridgeport mill. You have made some great scores!

Rex, you should try living in Poland. First everyone is street smart so getting a bargain is nigh in impossible. Secondly if someone doesnt know what a tool is they assume it might be a rare valuable tool and ask loads of money for it. The amount of sheer rusty rubbish being sold as 'collectable' is astonishing.

    • @radek4177
      @radek4177 4 года назад +5

Yeah. It is much harder to buy anything used at good price. I watched some german dude's channel and he is restoring old things from scrap yard. In Poland that is impossible. Here on scrap yard is trash only. It may be a good thing that nothing of value goes to waste but many people hoard old or not used stuff for so long that it rust/rots or gets damaged that it becomes trash :/

Oh yes, I'm from Poland. I'm so suprised of prices in this video. Last week I bought Stanley hand plane nr5. It was rusty but worth to have some fun with it. Seller was the 50~70 years old guy and told me he wants 600 zloty (150$).
For us even 20$ is a lot of money (and I'm just a student...)
I had battle with him because hand planes are rare here. After 2 hours I paid for it ~50$.
One of the greatest victory in my life. After one week in my work bench, I have now great old tool.

The problem I have with estate sales and auctions is that there is a 'crowd' at those things. It never fails you go to one a few times and you see the same people over and over, and you start asking quietly and figure out that half of them own large booths in peddlers malls etc. I've watched these people run bids up to near new prices on non-antique items so many times that I've quit trying.

Some great advice Rex :) This is almost identical to how I kitted out my workshop. People become obsessed with particular products, especially high cost tools thinking it will improve their skills. They help of course, but we can get by and more than adequately with some old tools that someone else made a long good living with already and it gives a second chance instead of becoming trash due to ignorance :) Keep up the great work ॐ

A few years ago a neighbour gave me a bunch of old planes just like your free ones - mostly rubbish, except that one was a German Ulmia bench plane - just like your Emmerich - in beautiful condition, costing around 85€ new. I had thought of making it into a scrub plane but it's as good as any metal #4 and the iron is probably better than modern Stanleys, so one of my #4s is now the scrubber. So right on with the fleamarkets. Go for it!

It was great to hear you talk about your good tool fortune.
Great tips, but not much help for a guy like me.
I'm down in south Georgia, here almost everybody had a dad, uncle, brother, or grandpa that used to do this or that, so they think the old stuff is worth more than it is.
Worse, there's nothing close like that show in Hershey.
If I go very far I'm in Brunswick, Jacksonville, or Valdosta, all college towns & so nothing like the show you visited.
I love living in the quiet rural south but we ain't got no decent 'shows' or flea markets.
I'll have to try to find some old guys that just want someone to appreciate their old tools.
    Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

I've got to give this a try. Around here going to the antique stores is a waste of time. All the necessary research has been done by the sellers and they all charge top dollar for their stuff. Thanks for the tip Rex. Subbed.

    • @RexKrueger
      @RexKrueger  6 лет назад

Yeah, I only get anywhere with antique stores when I find something weird and they don't know what it is. They know planes are worth money, but they've never seen a carriage-maker's rabbeting drawknife. So, you might get lucky there. I also have some better luck with antique malls, because that's a bunch of separate retailers under one roof. Anyway, thanks for watching and good hunting!

I've bought a few old tools in junk shops when the owner clearly didn't have the faintest idea what they were.
A few weeks ago I bought a lovely old brass and rosewood sliding bevel for £1. It was filthy and stuck the wrong way round (so it looked like a broken knife). An hour later with the application of some wire wool, a wire brush and some boiled linseed oil I had a lovely and fully functional tool.
I've also picked up a couple of really nice moulding planes similar to the ones you have there and again, they were easy to clean up. Fortunately, they still had fairly sharp blades because they are not easy to sharpen.

I really enjoy your videos and your mindset. I would love to join you in some of the projects you offer online; its a terrific way to get people to join your truly down to earth objectives and thinking, not to mention in some cases the basic woodworking principles. Getting us to follow the not only the right way to reach a higher level of woodworking but also to keep the bigger picture in mind. One day the timing with be right for me to follow along with a project that your offering and be able to be apart of the ideas and thoughts that I have come to appreciate about your goals of woodworking. In the mean time , I'm thinking i should join your following and become a supporter for your continued efforts and projects, I know now with Covid-19 being a ever present issue in our lives, its even tougher to stay afloat for most of us financially. I'm there in spirit , but that doesn't feed the bulldog , so to speak.Ive paid my dues being 64 years old and worked all my life , never once being on unemployment or out of work. I'm a Electrician by trade, started off as a union member, but being young and having a family early in life i had to have a side hustle too.
I've worked a couple of different skilled trades to be a well rounded " JACK OF ALL, MASTER OF JUST ONE " I think in a former life I was a carpenter, because ,I LOVE WOOD !, making it shine with all its detail for all to see from such humble beginnings. its a paradox with life. You too, I believe share a common tread with me in that mindset. Keep up the Great Teachings,we are all watching !

I don't use it very often but I found a brace and coffee can full of bits on Craigslist for $35. He threw in a bunch of other stuff so I handed him 2 20's and told him to keep it.
All together worth over $400. Except, he KNEW their value. Some of the things came from his Grandfather. He has no heir and wanted it to go to someone who would appreciate and use it.
Living in an area full of "Snowbirds" has it's benefits. They visit, move down, downsize, or their children sell off their stuff instead of hauling it back up north.
We do have flea markets. But WAY more pawn and consinement shops.
It's a BIG tool. Found a Craftsman radial arm saw for 💯. Took 3 days total teardown remove rust, clean and align, lube all the moving parts and it's still good. Guess I'll put my miter saw on a shelf underneath it.

A useful tip? Oh, yeah I’ll say, especially for a guy living in Ohio or Pennsylvania. When I lived in Cleveland, I was interested in furniture and tree lawns were loaded with good, free stuff that I’m now restoring. I wish I’d known more about tools. Out west, it’s like a hen without teeth. But that said, this is a wonderful and practical video (as usual).

I wouldn’t have my the tool collect I have today without the bargains I’ve picked up at yard sales, flea markets and eBay. One of my best finds was a Bailey 8C jointer plane in great condition with the factory grind on the iron. Let me know when you’re in Hershey again; I’m only about 30 minutes away.

I suspect the morticing gauge is wrongly assembled. I think the brass screw should meet the brass bar set in the ruler.

I have a few gripes with the whole mechanic and tractor guys statements as I love working on my tractors and trucks, but am also very passionate about wood working. I will admit I am a bit of an odd one out, but it isn't really that uncommon for wood workers to have some pretty nice cars as well. On another note though, I completely agree with the method of going to auctions for tools. For example, I had bought a miter saw and scroll saw a few years back for $10 a piece at an auction, also in PA, and the miter saw was pristine. It hadn't been used and the table hadn't even gotten the blade line cut yet. It is a craftsman miter saw I think from the early 90s and would have cost any times more if I would buy new and likely would have been much lower quality. Also, aside from missing one of the blade holders the scroll saw was pretty much new as well. I still need to find someone to mill the two pieces I need for it, but I found a temporary solution that isn't perfect, but it works, so I just deal with it for now. Thanks for the tips and I am actually going to an auction this weekend, so I'll keep them in mind while I am there.

The Difference Between Bragging and Bargins is weather you are buying it or selling it.

Wow! If I ever went there my wife would have to hold my wallet, I must say you show better self control than I would have. You did amazingly well and I'm sure it all kept you going for a while and many things will still be used. Some stuff like the specialist planes I wouldn’t have a clue about, but it’s nice to know that those important pieces of history have found a home that appreciates them and will treat them right.
I like the story of the gauge and I'd love to know the providence on the machinist box, I’d definitely would have to give those drawers a home. I recently bought 2 Marples Mortise chisels off eBay, not a place I’d normally buy tools without seeing but my bid of £4 won. When they arrived they were both phenomenally sharp with micro bevels on them and perfectly clean. So I messaged the person selling them to ask their history. They had belonged to their father who had suddenly died and they knew very little about them. I told them I would look after them as well as their father had (though his sharpening skills were better than mine). I think they liked knowing they will be well looked after.
A great video Rex, and even though it's now 18 months old I’m sure it still makes you smile.

that ece plane is a german make. they're still making those for double the price. unused with packaging from the 1981 would be like 200 euros over here. "ulmia" is the top notch maker here. also, "kunz" makes green-painted metal planes. i personally have some "howal" make planes from gdr times.

Some good buys no doubt, but a lot of restoration ahead of you. I never feel right with damaged, dirty, blunt or part rusted tools. It takes ages, & a bit of know how, to get tools back into a "it feels good" condition

Rex Krueger I mean there are some good deals on tools at markets but they get bought quick in towns here. Lots of people here are handymen and love to buy and horde everything. I do it myself, I see a cheap tool that I may not use but once for 7$ and I buy it.
