Not exactly a complete vegan....but you guys are great at just promoting a healthier lifestyle. Keep up the attitude and excitement of spreading the love for a healthier and stronger lifestyle!!! :) Love you guys...
Love your vids, but could you please not interrupt each other so often. Your Guest seemed pretty pissed off when he wanted to talk about dark leafy greens and you just interrupted him and talked about nuts. It´s hard to follow this way too. Just a little critism. You guys do a great Job. Keep it on!
People have been telling us that for years, but we just can't seem to do it. Even when we try. Rich was fine we were joking about it after we finished.
Even though I sometimes feel a bit bad for your guests, it does make me laugh every time when they look so overwhelmed while you guys are bouncing off each other! LOL. "Elephants don't go around looking for a pregnant cow" - GOLD! ROFL!
I mean they might have ADHD or something that's what I have and I do it a lot where I interrupt people in the middle of them talking and I hate it but I can't help it. I do try to stop myself if I'm aware of it
A recent video by Dr Gregor indicated that dairy doesn't cause calcium to be leached from our bones. There was an alternative explanation of why we have calcium in our pee after eating dairy and there was also a suggestion as to why more dairy increases hip fracture risk. Sadly I can't remember the details but the message remained that we should eat greens for our calcium not milk.
I feel like you missed an opportunity to talk about calcium metabolism. Milk has been advertised as a supplement for calcium because contains a bit of fat and is enriched with vitamin D - both of which help us to absorb calcium. But, as you’ve pointed out it doesn’t have to be the only source! It might be helpful to add that taking your vitamin D supplements and a bit of fat along with your plant-based calcium sources will help to optimize your intake.
*Don't forget the water!* Water can contain over 130mg/litre (although it varies, some water has negligible amounts). Calcium from water reportedly has the same bioavailability as calcium from milk. Milk has an average of 125mg per 100grams, to compare.
Such a FAB vid guy's :-) I LOVE eating steamed Broccoli, its delicious, I agree dairy is so acidic and the high protein content of it makes the body excrete out a lot of calcium, thanks a million for sharing guy's and sending heaps of love and tons of happiness from Waterford for a MAGICAL evening XXXX
you guys did more talking than your guest, Rich :) also how about you two boys plan ahead whose going to say way what/when or have a game plan of some sort, so you maybe able to minimize cutting off one another... possible?
Yes! That's the kind of information I want to pass to the people that consider veganism unhealthy. It's sometimes very hard to convince them that this lifestyle is indeed the best choice we can ever make. It's not eating grass and leafs. People have these kind of blinders and when they hear something that sticks out from their comfort zone they just don't want to hear about it and believe in what's really happening, trying to convince that animal products should be the basis of our daily consumption. It's frustrating
Love you guys, you're an inspiration to us all. Please give us the low down on Iodine, why we need it, what for and how to get enough of it! I eat very well as a Vegan but recently found out I was sorely in need of iodine in my diet. Thankyou!!
Have you tried adding iodized salt to your diet? That has helped me. You could also add more seaweed and include a good vegan multivitamin. Vegan or not, most people are deficient in iodine. I hope this helps! Cheers!
well! Lentils, Beans, spinach, broccoli, nuts and seeds, Dried fruits... Like take today, i reached 30% of my DRA with just my chia seed pudding. (i take a multivitamin on a daily bases as well to stay on the safe side which always gets me like an extra 50% of my RDA in iron). but none of this matter if you dont pair iron rich foods with vitamin C rich ones in order for the iron to be absorbed better.
Calcium is indeed a critical nutrient, however I would also like to see you address getting enough Iron on a vegan (or vegetarian) diet. I've been vegetarian for 17 years and recently discovered I was seriously deficient in Iron, I never worried about it before, but after researching it, seems like we vegetarians are at a major disadvantage since Heme-iron is significantly more readily absorbed than non-Heme Iron. Thoughts, or maybe even a separate video on the topic?
A lot of the brassicas are iron-rich, and so are things like molasses, cereals and beans. People sometimes suggest cooking in cast iron to help, but I'm not sure if that's a joke or not haha.
I don't believe it is as acidic as you guys claim. There really isn't any evidence for your claim. I know its a common misconception through the vegan community because of probably Gary Yurofsky. I am a vegan, and used to love saying that to people but it simply does not have an overwhelming amount of science to back it up. Big fan of your channel.
A quick Google says that the Ph varies and gives a value of around 6.4. Not very acidic at all. This guy seems to be full of shit to be honest and an example of why you don't take health advice off of some bozos on youtube.
It was a common misconception due to meat and dairy consumption resulting in a flood of calcium in the blood combined with the proven fact that societies which consume the most meat and dairy also have the highest rates of osteoporosis. A new study debunked that by placing tracers on the meats calcium and seeing that it was that same calcium coming back out in the blood and urine. Not calcium from the bone. So instead we learned that meat and dairy are just poor sources of calcium.
whoops...not actually true re the "leaching" but very true re. DLG being amazing for calcium and better digested...aside from those few that are high in oxalates and if eaten raw...hello spinach looking at you :-D
A lot of woo-ing! Lucky I had my earphone volume on low! lol! Thanks for the calcium info :) Being 1/2 Chinese I grew up not eating much dairy and my Mum cannot tolerate it that much as obviously they had lots of soy and veggies etc.
Hey! I'm a 15 year old irish vegan and I love your vegan red Pesto but may I ask why the green pesto contains dairy? Or any other happy pear food that contains dairy or non vegan ingredients? I just thought it didn't make sense as you are both vegans. I'd love to see your green pesto go vegan and all of your foods!
+Kitteneesh thanks a mill! We have a coriander cashew pesto coming out later this month and it's vegan - it's probably more popular than the lovely basil pesto thanks again 👍🏻😀
+The Happy Pear no problem I can't wait! I love the happy pear section of super valu because it's hard to shop vegan in Ireland, I don't know one single vegan😂 do you guys work down in the happy pear in greystones? I'd love to pop in one day and say hi!
I wish they would stop Interupting him I wana here what he's got to say there like two big kids trying to out do each other for attention but I still absolutely love them
I love Rich Roll, and all his content, but after doing some research to confirm what he said I discovered 1 cup of cow's milk has about 300 mg of calcium, whereas 1 cup of collard greens have 85 mg. That's less than a third, which doesn't check out with what he just said (maybe I'm missing something?). I also love plant diets, but don't humans produce milk as well, and wasn't that part of our ancestral diet originally, only with human milk? If so, shouldn't milk be a regular part of our diet? There's the old saying... everything is better in moderation. I think the plant based diet is good in practice, and people will see benefits right away if they switch to plant-based (especially in America whose diets are driven by grain/dairy/sugar), and while I think reducing the amount of grains/milk/sugar we eat is beneficial, I'm not entirely convinced that completely abstaining from those foods is beneficial for our health.
Valerie Browne Also found in the soul, but it does not go into the vegetables, so when they are washed heavily the b12 is washed away. Ancestors that ate soley plant based got their b12 that way, by not over washing vegetables :)
Same goes for haloumi and other cheeses and yoghurt dairy cow's milk products (local "grown" or not) - acidifying to our bodies and not at all healthy for us. Which is why I'm puzzled as to why your new book includes dairy?
I've heard that the type of calcium in dark leafy veg contains oxalic acid, which binds with the calcium in our bodies, making it difficult for our bodies to absorb calcium. Is that true? I don't care for cow's milk, so I'd be delighted to be able to just eat dark leafy greens instead. Also, do we have to pair the calcium-rich veg with things that contain Vitamin D? Thank you! :)
What about soy products and stuff like that? I mean, I like leafy greans but I don't eat them everyday, and I'd rather not eat nuts because they're so full of fat (yes, even though it's healthy fat I have to really watch my calories).
Hmmm... My people have consumed milks for 1000s of years, so the idea that cows milk is for calves only doesn't sit well with me. Ethnic norwegians are rarely intolerant as well.
Yes and no. In normal humans, and most mammals in general, babies are born with a gene that regulates the production of lactase, an enzyme that breaks down lactose (milk sugar) in the small intestine. As mammals are weaned, the gene is switched off and the production of the lactase enzyme effectively stops, and therefore unable to digest milk. Not too long ago though (5000 years ago approximately) in certain human populations, a genetic mutation occurred that allowed the continued production of lactase enzyme into adulthood. This doesn't mean milk is healthy or for us. It simply means we can now digest it. There are plenty of reasons not to drink cow milk
snap peas True. I suppose I just don't think it is bad enough to make up for the benefits. Very few things are black and white. Maybe in the future, if science finds cows milk is more harmful than we think today, I'll consider giving it up.
+eizhowa science has found that cows milk is more helpful just research and you'll find it. It's been proven so many times how harmful it is to us but the industries obviously aren't going to tell us that what they're selling is terrible for our health. Instead they feed us with lies that cows milk is good for you and even trick you into thinking you NEED it??! It's a multi billion dollar industry they have so much power to influence us and tell us what's good and bad for us ALL FOR PROFIT. Doctors used to tell us smoking had health benefits😂
Kitteneesh I guess I take a more pragmatic approach. The question to me is, is it more harmful than the alternative? I wish I was able to eat only the healthies foods available, but I know that (my) life doesn't work like that. High quality, organic milk from happy cows is cheap and readily available in my country. Coffee with milk in the morning could (/would) stop me from buying e.g. an energy drink. And milk has the benefit of being tried and tested. The new alternative "milks" may not have been subject to as much research. (And I really like cows. The idea that they will go away because we no longer want their product makes me sad...)
I came here for info on where to find vegan calcium, all I got was 3.50m of dairy bashing and "Collard Greens, broccoli and Bok Choi". Love you guys but this video really wasn't informative at all.

This was the first video of the day too, Rich found his footing with us. :D
yeah he seemed getting along with it pretty well
I mean they might have ADHD or something that's what I have and I do it a lot where I interrupt people in the middle of them talking and I hate it but I can't help it. I do try to stop myself if I'm aware of it

Three of my favorite herbivores in one video!!!!!
Was such a pleasure to host him.
So lovely to see the telepathic twin action at 2:57 when both of them looked at each other, then to the camera together saying, "Chard!" lol

Brilliant advice. I take a calcium and vit d supplement every now and again, just to be on the safe side and make sure I'm getting enough.
Leafy greens are my fave! Are you going to do a series of these types of videos? Breaking down what plant foods have what micronutrients?
Thanks Happy Pear for hosting the Rich Roll talk Wednesday night are more importantly thanks for squeezing me in. Muchas gracias 🙏🙏
Love Rich Roll, have his Plant Power book too! I also like how you guys collaborate with others to spread the vegan plant based message.
*Don't forget the water!*

Interesting!
not every type of water...
+VeganBanana
Exactly, that's why I said "it varies, some water has negligible amounts". :)
Amazing!!! This is too cool! Cant believe you guys got Rich Roll over! What a PLANT POWER TRIO!!

Give them a copy of Becoming Vegan or Becoming Vegetarian. Both are interesting reads and so much info on nutrition and doing it right.
Love you all !

Where do Vegans get their Iron ? The answers will help to many people, especially women!! :-)
Цветелина Неделчева Beans and green
Oatmeal
Supplements. But then again, so do many omnivores.

Great vid, I love Rich Roll, *cough*when he's not advertising shitty sponsors *cough*, his podcast is fantastic and I still use his cook book daily!
how did ya get in touch with him ,read his book last yr ,is rich giving any talks in dublin over the wk end??

That's good news really, a lot of people in Ireland are intolerant too but they just don't recognise it.
Are unhulled black sesame and poppy seeds good as Calcium sources? 100g per day? How about algae calcium or Calcium carbonate?
Thank you! Great, important info--& I LOVE my greens (& the rest of the veg, too).
Love your videos!! Keep it up!!
Thanks, we did a few videos with RIch excited to upload them. :D

Rich Roll in Ireland! Man, I would have loved to have been at the Q+A... Will he be doing any more public appearances before leaving the country?
No unfortunately, we're doing the podcast tonight and then he's heading home tomorrow morning.
+The Happy Pear Fair play for getting him to come over lads, will look forward to the podcast. Keep up the great work, love your videos and vlogs!
I wish they would stop Interupting him I wana here what he's got to say there like two big kids trying to out do each other for attention but I still absolutely love them

Rich Roll. Ireland. What!!!!!
Yeah, we invited him over and he did a talk and a Q&A in Greystones. He's here for one more day and we're doing his podcast. Such an amazing guy.

Rich Roll is hardly speaking!!!
I came here for info on where to find vegan calcium, all I got was 3.50m of dairy bashing and "Collard Greens, broccoli and Bok Choi". Love you guys but this video really wasn't informative at all.
When you invite a guest give them a chance to speak. Så try to shut the....... Up
exactly!!, this was irritating! to hear and watch, LOL!
I have seen rich roils videos before. I was not that impressed. like cheap Lazy Vegan better.
