    Got a bit of a chuckle from CNET's blurb on Intel's latest and greatest: "The most extreme example of this advanced packaging is Intel's Ponte Vecchio processor, which combines separate chiplets for processing, graphics and memory into a mammoth device with more than 100 billion transistors. Ponte Vecchio's number crunching and AI prowess is designed for the Aurora supercomputer..."
    Meanwhile, Apple just put 114 billion transistors into a mini desktop that you can order today.

    I have some clarification and engineering details for you that you might have missed. The M1 Ultra is NOT two separate chips joined together. They were designed and produced on the same wafer die which includes the “Ultra Fusion” connection. From a manufacturing standpoint the ultra would have been the primary chip produced and the Max chips were binned and cut from these wafers. We seen this chip last due to manufacturing delays and all the disposed dies due to the process of making 5nm.
    The crazy part about all this is. Intels interweave technology between chips is only good for 10.4 gb/s and AMDs theoretical bandwidth using similar technology is capped at 20 gb/s. The fact that Apple got the bandwidth up to 2.5 tb/s is INSANE and should not theoretically even be possible with our current technology.
    Lastly the Max chip in the studio will out perform the Max in the MBP. Simply due to thermals, the fans they have put on these chips in the studio should allow them to go above and beyond what we’ve already seen.
    Exciting times are ahead. The Mac Pro is going to be ludicrous just because they can make it. I firmly believe they are rubbing this in intel’s face as hard as they can.

      Apple themselves said that they fused two M1 Max chips together. Creating a chip with that kind of footprint from a single diode wafer is impossible. I'm afraid that you might have misread some information.

      @@petrifiedmach Please review the M1 Ultra presentation portion from Johny Srouji. “The leading approach is to use two chips
      and connect them via the motherboard. However, that approach
      has significant tradeoffs including increased latency, reduced bandwidth and much higher
      power consumption.” -Johny Srouji
      Then he proceeds to spin exactly what I said the first time, except in common language and marketing hype. It’s literally two chips designed on a die with a silicon bridge, which is designed in during the engineering of the chip stage and not a part of the manufacturing phase aka replication waste. Basically Apple took a possibility of designing the silicon around the chip and interweaving it within the chip to create the “UltraFusion”, the portion in which would have been recycled anyways. Not all chips will meet QA or testing requirements, which then these would be salvaged by binning and disabling portions of the chip further creating the M1 “Max” chip.

    You have to remember that putting a chip into a laptop and a desktop are very different. In laptop they only have very small cooling and stuff, and because of that they eat very little wattage. But in a desktop, with way better cooling, they can eat as much power as they want, and that mean it will be more powerful when in a desktop.

    • @navalfocus
      @navalfocus 2 года назад

      Also worth remembering Apple doesn't throttle the new MBPs on battery, so the performance envelope cannot unduly impact battery life. Luke's own videos already show how the M1 Max drains the battery when compared to the M1 Pro. No point squeezing more power out of the chip for the battery to go in 2 hours.

    • @utubekullanicisi
      @utubekullanicisi 2 года назад +1

      The cooling systems in the 14" and 16" MacBook Pros were largely overbuilt for the M1 Pro & Max, you couldn't even hear the fan even in intensive workloads, even the 14" MBP with M1 Max didn't get that loud. However, the M1 Max totally *can* compete with the 10-core i5-12600K, and desktop RTX 3060 Ti.
      4:19 It's been pointed out that Cinebench R23 isn't a great benchmark to fully saturate and show the capabilities of the M1's cores. Cinebench's CPU renderer is Intel Embree which is specifically optimized for Intel's AVX2 SIMD with a not so great port to the ARM NEON SIMD. Andrei F. formerly from Anandtech had reported that the base M1 only draws 3.8W in the single core test, which is definitely less than you'd expect, which is in the 5-6.5W range per core. I would suggest you to look at M1 Max' SPECint2017 scores instead, it beats a Ryzen 7 5800X there.
      7:21 Most reviewers "benchmark" the M1 Max with Rosetta bottlenecked, non-Metal optimized applications, and workflows that aren't popular on the Mac platform. If you actually look at a benchmark that is close to fully taking advantage of Metal and Apple's TBDR pipeline (e.g GFXBench), you'll see that Apple is putting out higher scores than a desktop RTX 3060.

    It’s even more costly than I expected for Apple. At AU$6,099 base price here in Australia for the M1 Ultra - that’s a lot before you start speccing it up. There are several cars on the market, Mitsubishi, Kia and MG 3 that brand new drive away are only 2.5x to 3x that price.

      I guess I want to compare if it’s worthwhile going down the path of this new M1 Ultra chipset Mac (which appears to be way way more powerful) or will the current M1 in either a MacBook or Mini be ok and comfortable enough for the next few interations of Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve. When I buy a new Mac I find I get a lot of reliable years out of them so long as it’s high end spec when I get it

      @@shred3005Hi! I’ve had a few MacBooks recently. Very circumstantial due to work and switching jobs. I had a 16gb until i7 6-core MBP from 2018. They keyboard always broke and had it replaced three times. I was eager to get the, then “next gen MBP”. Instead, the MacBook Air was released and I purchased the baseline 8gb model. It was incredible, portable, and more powerful than my previous MBP. I couldn’t believe it. I intended to give this to family as sometimes I would max out the ram. If you get the Air, make sure you upgrade your RAM. Also, you’ll need a high end dongle to do anything worthwhile with photos and videos.
      My previous job owed me a computer so I got the baseline MBP 14” the day it was released. I waited for this computer for several years! It’s entirely exceeded ALL my expectations. To this day I still haven’t heard the fan. It’s honestly, entirely overkill for what I need.
      If your MBP is pretty old, you won’t believe what the Air the Mini could do for you. If you want to splurge get the MBP baseline!

      @@whatispizza thank you. Have you used you MacBook Pro with a 4K or 5K monitor? If so, does it handle it ok?
      I’m confident that since M1 chipset even the Air with 8 core GPU and 16GB RAM or MacBook Pro 13” with 16GB RAM would handle Lightroom so easily and even DaVinci Resolve ok. But I do like to plug my old MacBook Pro into my 32” 4K monitor for photo and video editing. It struggles there.
      That seems crazy the base Air can do so much as in the past I’ve always bought about the most powerful MacBook Pro you buy because it future proofs you for a while as over time you need more and more grunt to handle the latest software versions, higher and higher resolution images and video and bigger and bigger file sizes.
      The Mac Studio costs but it would drive a 4K monitor in it’s sleep, no problem and have future proof power for years but that locks me to a static system. Your recommendation of Air or Pro gives that mobile laptop flexibility so long as it can handle driving a separate 4K screen without blinking.

I expect the Studio Display will remain usable for 12+ more years, allowing me to purchase maybe 3-4 new computers as they're introduced. Even with the latest Blender I think Blender's Metal backend is still in its Alpha stages. You're gonna have to wait a little longer to see the actual performance Apple Silicon chips put out.

    • @MrSilentservice
      @MrSilentservice 2 года назад +1

      @@utubekullanicisi Yes, I know that Blender 3.1 is really the first release version of Blender that offers rendering via Metal. But this is also a big step forward on the Mac, as Blender GPU rendering has been inactive on the Mac for a long time due to the problems with OpenCL. The important thing is that Blender, with its now superior features, thus has a secure future on the Mac platform, I am very happy about that!
      Benchmarks would thus be important for purchase decisions, especially within the Mac family M1 -> M1Pro -> M1Max -> M1Ultra. A comparison with NVidia Linux or Windows systems also makes sense in the meantime.
      The following are my own benchmarks:
      Blender Junk Shop Benchmark
      Desktop System
      AMD Ryzen 3950X (16/32 core/threads) CPU
      37 seconds
      AMD Ryzen 3950X (16/32 core/threads) with GPU NVidia 2070super
      14 seconds
      MacBookPro 16" M1Pro (16) CPU (10 core)
      73 seconds
      MacBookPro 16" M1Pro (16) GPU (16 core)
      48 seconds
      As you can see, you can achieve quite good results in a Macbook laptop compared to a fairly powerful upper mid-range desktop system. Working with Blender on a modern Mac system is simply getting much faster.
      And the MBP is mobile and virtually silent, with much lower power consumption! And macOS :)
      I am curious, how the M1 Ultra will perform in a Mac Studio.

  • @chrisatye
    @chrisatye 2 года назад

    Interesting point about that display for UK customers: normally, Apple have a habit of simply changing the ‘$’ to a ‘£’, whatever the exchange rate (apple studio is $1999 and £1999, but at current exchange rates should be about £1550 - bit of a rip-off), but the display starts at £1499 in the UK; they’ve actually adjusted the price so it’s nearer what it should be. I hope that’s something we see happen more!

    Apple is probably using very favorable tests as they have done in the past. It is likely the tests are in programs that are well optimized for Apple Silicon. We have seen for the past two years that software optimization makes a huge difference in performance.

    • @utubekullanicisi
      @utubekullanicisi 2 года назад

      No, they're not using heavily optimized apps, they're using testing methodology that is fair for their silicon and the others they're comparing it to.

    @Luke I don't think you're reading the graphs correctly at 4:07. Apple is just saying that M1 Max consumes 65% less power at that specific moment in time. Clearly the graph is not complete as the 12600K reaches usually in gaming scenarios 120W and the TDP is 150W while the M1 Max clocked 39.7W while running Cinebench.

If I was ordering the MacStudio with M1 Max CPU, I would go with Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 64 GB RAM, and 2 or 4 TB SSD. Why? I'm looking to keep this system for 3+ years.

      That is not hard to believe due to thermals and active cooling. The fans in the studio seem to take 75% of the internal space. I am assuming when maxed out, the Studio can maintain performance for longer and maybe even at a higher level.

    I’m gonna venture to guess that the M1 Max benchmark against the i5 is within the Mac Studio. The benchmarks previous were in a laptop chassis, and I think that cooling system they were super proud of in the keynote probably has something to do with that performance. I’m not sure though, we’ll see what’s really going on once they start shipping out to people.

    • @utubekullanicisi
      @utubekullanicisi 2 года назад +3

      The cooling systems in the 14" and 16" MacBook Pros were largely overbuilt for the M1 Pro & Max, you couldn't even hear the fan even in intensive workloads, even the 14" MBP with M1 Max didn't get that loud. By the way, the M1 Max totally *can* compete with the 10-core i5-12600K, and desktop RTX 3060 Ti.
      4:19 It's been pointed out that Cinebench R23 isn't a great benchmark to fully saturate and show the capabilities of the M1's cores. Hey Luke, if you look at the graph comparing the m1 Max to the 12600k, you see that it shows the M1 Max’s peak being less than that of the 12600k. It simply shows that the peak performance of the M1 Max is matched by the 12600k but with a 65% gap in power consumption.

  • @harrisontu264

    There’s some thing that confuses me a lot about the pricing structure. If you upgrade an M1 Max from 24 to 32 graphics, it’s an extra $200. But if you upgrade an M1 ultra from 48 to 60 for graphics, it’s an extra thousand dollars. But the ultra is just to max chips put together, so why the extra $600, it’s like you’re upgrading five chips from 24 to 32.

  • @obamtl

    Hi Luke, the M1 Max in the MacBook Pro and Mac Studio have different performance levels based on Apple’s data. The MacBook M1 Max can only handle 7 8K ProRes 422 Streams, whereas the Mac Studio M1 Max can handle 9 8K ProRes 422 Streams.
