    Oh my! I first saw this as a freshman in college..the English instructor was attempting to "broaden" our thinking. It was 1970, what was there to think about? Lol.. It was and still a very complex movie. Thank you. Pizza Flix.. You are incredible!

    Early synchro sound effects and music...but not a true talkie yet.

    • @PizzaFLIX

      So, I guess we can call them early "sound films from the pre-talkie era of Hollywood"🍕

    • @STho205
      @STho205 Месяц назад

      @@PizzaFLIX The Jazz Singer, credited as 1st, was really 90% a synchro record and dialog on cards. There's only a few scenes with direct talking and the singing scenes. Singing was easier to do with a synchro record as lips being slightly off in a musical number is not easy to spot.

      @@STho205I’m fascinated by the “pre-talking, synchronized sound” films as they only existed for short period of time. I haven’t done it yet, but I’ll see if I can find the dates and the titles of the first and the last. 🍕

    I read the book a few years ago. It was a hard read but great story. I lament the fact that today’s movie writers don’t dive into classic literature. All we see today are movies about dark dystopian futures or very unsophisticated comedies. Maybe it’s indicative of the adults our society is producing via the education system 🤔

      Hi, Troy. It's a crying shame more people don't watch these late-era silent films as they would be richly rewarded.
      The ones posted to PizzaFLIX (circa late 1926 to mid-1929) are not technically silent, as they were produced with a recorded synchronized score and sound effects.

    Mary Philbin had become a popular actress at Universal in the 1920's; best known for her part in "Phantom of the Opera". You could see this as a vehicle for Lon Chaney, who would have also excelled in this role as Conrad Veidt did. But Chaney had taken big money and split for MGM. Olga Baclanova's biggest claim was as the dancer in "Salome" five years before. Carl Laemmle occasionally splurged on a big movie; this was one of them. Soundtracks were very popular in 1928, covering for films made as silents.
