Oh my! I first saw this as a freshman in college..the English instructor was attempting to "broaden" our thinking. It was 1970, what was there to think about? Lol.. It was and still a very complex movie. Thank you. Pizza Flix.. You are incredible!
Absolutely brilliant folks. the acting, the costumes, the storyline incredible, fantastic, top notch. a salute to the human spirit this is a must watch fellow film fans. you wont regret it. so awesome. thanks 🧓
@@PizzaFLIX The Jazz Singer, credited as 1st, was really 90% a synchro record and dialog on cards. There's only a few scenes with direct talking and the singing scenes. Singing was easier to do with a synchro record as lips being slightly off in a musical number is not easy to spot.
@@STho205I’m fascinated by the “pre-talking, synchronized sound” films as they only existed for short period of time. I haven’t done it yet, but I’ll see if I can find the dates and the titles of the first and the last. 🍕
Exquisite, fabulous drama, marvelous cast and direction. Wonderful synchronized score with such a memorable love theme. And the dog, Zimbo. Thank you, PizzaFlix for a great film showing!
I read the book a few years ago. It was a hard read but great story. I lament the fact that today’s movie writers don’t dive into classic literature. All we see today are movies about dark dystopian futures or very unsophisticated comedies. Maybe it’s indicative of the adults our society is producing via the education system 🤔
Most films had gone full length after Birth of a Nation. The Edison patent restrictions of 20 minute films (one reel) got ignored when the studios moved to California.
There are very many lengthy films from the 20's. if you enjoyed this film i recommend watching Mary Pickfords film Sparrows. 1926, well worth seeing. cheers
This is such a brilliant movie. I’m about half-way in, and by far this has to be the best silent film I’ve seen (not that I’ve seen a whole lot). I love the dynamic characterization (played by superb actors), costumes, setting, camera work, and of course brilliant story.
Hi, Troy. It's a crying shame more people don't watch these late-era silent films as they would be richly rewarded. The ones posted to PizzaFLIX (circa late 1926 to mid-1929) are not technically silent, as they were produced with a recorded synchronized score and sound effects.
Mary Philbin had become a popular actress at Universal in the 1920's; best known for her part in "Phantom of the Opera". You could see this as a vehicle for Lon Chaney, who would have also excelled in this role as Conrad Veidt did. But Chaney had taken big money and split for MGM. Olga Baclanova's biggest claim was as the dancer in "Salome" five years before. Carl Laemmle occasionally splurged on a big movie; this was one of them. Soundtracks were very popular in 1928, covering for films made as silents.
THIS IS ASTOUNDING Filmmaking! From the Sets to the Costumes...Acting to Directing...and The CINEMATOGRAPHY & SCORE!!! Brilliant "Live" Version of the Masterpiece Book Classic! 1928 WAY AHEAD of its' Time! Bravo Bravo!! Many Thanks for this Showing❤
Ok now I have mad respect for Olga Baclanova, going where I am sure others feared to tread. What a stunning portrayal of an utterly depraved young woman. Also, ♥️ Zimbo, an exceptionally good boy!
I've always heard references praising this film, but never knew the actual story, or very much about it. It is a compelling film beautifully designed and shot. Fantastic direction. Talk about acting with your eyes.
sure thing that would be great! 2 channels i watch are Mary Pickford Origional, and Rare Silents and Talkies. theres a Clara Bow ch i check out too sometimes. Thanks ms Lucy, cheers 🧓🥂

I'm glad you chose this one. One of the three big art films of 1928.
Early synchro sound effects and music...but not a true talkie yet.
So, I guess we can call them early "sound films from the pre-talkie era of Hollywood"🍕

Im surprised this movie is so long. It seems incongrous of the era.
Thanks for the upload, Ive been meaning to watch it for a long time.

Yes! I am grateful the ending was changed from the tragic one in Victor Hugo's novel.
