Vintage film fans this is a top notch must see film! great story, the actors are so expressive and dramatic, plus two of the greatest actresses of bygone days Dolores Costello and Anna May Wong, you cant go wrong here. Happy Monday, enjoy all 🎬🎥❤️❤️❤️🥂🧓
This was a great movie. I liked the reference to the ship crewmen quitting for the gold rush which indeed happened and left 1000s of abandoned ships to rot in the SF harbor - which eventually got filled in with garbage and is now the unstable ground under much of downtown's buildings. Also, downtown SF experienced six devastating fires between 1849 and 1851 with the May 3, 1851, fire destroying 18 blocks of the business district (75% of core city) and 2000 buildings over a 10-hour span.

This is a very high quality film- especially for its age- and I cannot thank the poster enough for it (and for the rest of the films in his collection). I've subscribed so that I can watch a new movie every night! It's perfect to wind down to after a long and stressful at work or school. The film itself is about the city of San Francisco around the turn of the century and how regular people couldn't afford to live and how predatory bankers and loan sharks descend on farmlands and people's private property that they own outright. These people are truly heartless and the expressions on the actors' faces said it all.
Dolores Costello would eventually marry John Barrymore (and divorce him); she was beautiful here and in "Noah's Ark" the following year, and in a few more movies through the 30's as well; Funny to see her billed as Dolores Costello BARRYMORE. Anna May Wong puts in a good performance here, along with the veteran character actor Warner Oland. And the Vitaphone soundtrack, properly synchronized, is great to listen to. In the public domain now.
Great movie! And excellent special effects for the time. Dolores Costello, Anna May Wong and Warner Oland... My favorite Charlie Chan! Thanks so much for presenting this piece of movie history!
Great film! Actually this should of been posted, Sunday, September 29th! The 29th is National Silent Movie Day-- fourth year running. Also too, it has been National Coffee Day, so there are two holidays on one day.
Great old silent film! This must be the first depiction of the SF Earthquake of 1906. Great story, even though it skips right past the Mexican period when the Spanish Land Grants became Mexican, but hey, it's just a small slice of history. The corruption of Old Chinatown was real and did not end wit the quake!
Love historical films. Appreciate your channel and all classic movies. To have Warner Oland (great character actor), Dolores Costello (Noah's Ark 1928), and Anna Mae Wong (Shanghai Express).🎥🍿
I didn't think a silent movie could be so "expressive", but the acting was wonderful especially the major characters. Also, what a great rendition of the earthquake considering the tools available at the time (or any time).
