She's a brilliant actress as well as a vocal olympian... a force of nature... in a class of her own

At the point where you notice the attitude change, she sings: "Ich frag die Alte wo das Wald ist. Sie sagt: mein Udo is schon lang tod" That is: I ask the old woman where the forrest is. She says: my Udo (her husband's name) is dead for a long time already". Beautifully written compassion with the old woman!

Just think for a second where the husbands died/where buried for this old women generation. And the question itself is what drow a lot of young people after WWII, they demanded answers for the participation of their parents/grandparents in the Nazi regime.

Just for those who did not catch it, the lyrics are very open to interpretation.
in short: girl received a friend's letter, announcing a suicide, she follows him by train for a last meeting, but in fact he wanted to start a new life in the city after coming out. She is disappointed and calls him a weirdo.
everything is codified in 80ies language, hinting by the fact that the person moved to Hamburg, in those days something like a 'german san francisco of the 1970ies' meeting 'at the end of the road from the main train station' which says clearly 'Reeperbahn', which means the most famous red light district. then this clearly dog whistling style "i thought were going into the woods, I didn't new about your 'other side of the river'!". Since other songs on the same album handle (at least) LGB matters it's certainly not a homophobic statement by the Nina Hagen.
So wat is it? the statements of travel details like the focus on the train policeman (police freshmen served in those units, meaning potentially of the attractive type), the problem of spilled candy sticking in her handbag, the fact that she carried a gift for her friend, a value deal shoe of recognizable brand from a bigbox-store to put on the grave(?): certainly paints the picture of a naive young woman, totally lost her mental focus with all those details, not realizing what is going on with her life right at that moment.)
my take is: she describes the feeling of 'the naive girl from the village, discovering that there is more than she knew so far and seemed to be obvious'. this song is about "reacting to a coming out": Calling people names instead of being happy that they now can live their identity.

Thank you for bringing back these good old memories. For me, this song lives on the lyrics and the "everydayness" of the described situation she is talking about. Ich frag, die Alte wo der Wald ist. Sie sagt: "Mein Udo ist schon lange tod." :-) You should read the translation to the lyrics.

Nina Hagen's band started their own business in the 80s. Their name was: Spliff

The guitarist could be the unloved brother of Freddy Mercury, whom the family abandoned on the highway. There he met Nina and said "it couldn't get worse". The rest is history.

She and her band ended up hating each other. During the recordings of their last record, Nina and the Band recorded the tracks separatly without seeing each other, IIRC. They continued without her under the name Spliff. I highly recommend checking them out.

I like the live version better .
expressly when the says , ... ( down to the river ) the sound has more meaning .
and the look on her face !.... its like she got caught being seen , ... in a deep thought .

The guy could be Herman Brood, a Dutch artist and famous junky with whom she was crazy in love. Not sure though. Nina Hagen was not weird, she was a top singer and showgirl. She did much for feminism but without becoming a turd, at least that is my opinion. Love this record!
