She's delightful. Anyone that reacts so well to her gets an instant sub. I started listening to Nina when I was but a wee punk of age 12. Now in my 40's I still find her wonderful. Some may not get it, but the people that love her will appreciate any of her music you react to.

While she looks funny and sings in funny voices her words are deep man. She sings that "Berlin is a dead city, with barbwire around, berlin is old (in a nice way) but full of voilence, where did they go, the beautyfull dreams?" She tells a story about something very real at that time. Let`s not forget this was before the germany reunion. She talks about real issus here and people like me (40+) can still relate no matter if you were born in east or west.
Rammsteins song Radio btw is also about the isolation on the east side. Nina looks at it from a different point of view, even though she was also born in east Berlin, just like most of the Rammstein members.

    • @xsezz
      @xsezz  3 года назад

Thank you for the explanation behind the song. Very interesting. Yeah, other comments have mentioned she comes from the same place as some of the members from Rammstein.

@@xsezz she wrote to the then hardcore communist state fascist leader Honecker: when her foster father Wolf Biermann was expatriated when he was in the west: she would then also be expatriated because otherwise she would continue Biermann's work and shortly afterwards she was also in the west. The Hagen family is an artist family in the third generation. They prefer to sing Brecht songs together ;-). The GDR has kicked its most famous artists out of their republic .....

The german translated with google translate:
      The world is so broken
Is everything on this earth rubble
But now everything will be fine
On your side there's no bankruptcy
      And then, yes, and when
Then comes the man or woman of your dreams
And then you think you ran
      A whole life
And money is more - money money money money -
worth more than I like you, when I
Eating alone is not enough for us
Also, no chatter does not make enough of
In this so-called country, in this so-called city
The pressure has to go, otherwise, it remains as
      A whole life
Chaos, chaos - money is more
worth more than I like you, when I

Nina's mother was a famous East German actress. Nina was in some of her mother's movies. She took ballet when she was 6 years old and by 9 she was considered an opera prodigy. The facial expressions are pretty much making a mockery of the pretentiousness of opera. I saw her in concert in Los Angeles in 1985 and she was great. She is a vegan and believed (past tense) in UFOs. In fact she named her daughter Cosma Shiva. She also has a son named Otis.

No amount of talking will fill a man's stomach
    In this so-called city
The pressure's got to go - the pressure's got to go - or it'll stay there
    A whole life
Berlin, Berlin, dead city - shit city
With barbed wire on white fences - woh woh woh
Berlin is old and full of violence
Where have they gone, yes where have they gone, the beautiful dreams?
And then, yes then and now
Lightning flashes out of the blue
    And strikes the whole club
    Just for a moment
And money is worth more - money - than me
    Than you, than me
    Eating alone is not enough

Nina Hagen certainly is an eccentric. She named her daughter Cosma Shiva Hagen (yes, that really is her name); she is an actress but hardly known outside of Germany.
Nina caused one of the biggest television scandals ever in Germany with her appearance in an Austrian talk show that was broadcasted in Germany too. Here is an excerpt of it that shows the scene that caused the scandal. It is in German with French subtitles. You won't need a translation to understand what she is talking about though.
