Don't worry, I had a friend who'd been playing for 40 years and he didn't know how to do it properly. It's like almost everything in golf, it is the exact opposite of what you'd think it would be! Push it in to the middle, don't lift it.
I do the same, generally I try to miss the green by about 10 yards then chip or putt on. Never make a pitchmark. Mind you don't make many pars either 🤣🤣

To prevent green scarring, I avoid reaching them from far distances (anything farther than 30 meters). I'm the green keepers pet of my local course
