So he aborted and went back to the video (which is my preference). Perhaps he will make a another video just for you where he re-inserts the tube properly. I'm sure it will be riveting.

    The imaging is from added harmonics. Our ears are very good at locating the source of sounds above 6000 Hz because the head blocks sounds from one side of the head to the other - as much as 10dB for as little as 30 degrees off center. So a little added higher harmonics tells us where things are in the soundstage without affecting the timbre by much. The added harmonics also create warmth (the fundamental is richer or thicker or more solid sounding).

    • @elgringoec

      Comparing this to a good clean replica can leave a critical listener wondering what he was thinking about that being a "better" sound.

    • @paulsebring6930
      @paulsebring6930 2 года назад +1

      Natural binaural spatial cues that we hear in real life outside of stereophonic "imaging" are Interaural Level Difference (ILD) created by head shadow and the shape and orientation of the outer ears, and Interaural Time Difference (ITD) created by the distance between left and right ears and the different distance sound has to travel to left and right ears. The distance between ears is to small to create significant Interaural Level Difference. Interaural Time Difference dominates "imaging" (localization) below about 700Hz where the head is acoustically small compared to sound wavelengths so there is very little Interaural Level Difference. Interaural Level Difference dominates "imaging" above about 1,500Hz.
      Stereo channel level and time differences rendered by the natural spatial cues that locate speakers do not replicate natural spatial cues that locate singers and musical instruments heard in real life. Natural spatial cues that locate left and right speakers limit stereophonic "imaging" to the space between left and right speakers. No stereo channel level or time differences can create a convincing realistic stable phantom stereophonic illusion heard from a direction to the left of the left speaker or to the right of the right speaker or behind, above, or below the listener.
      Stereophonic "imaging" is created at the listener's ears, not between the speakers or in the listening room.
      Devices that provide identical, independent audio signal paths do not create stereo channel level and time differences required for stereophonic "imaging".
      Anything added by the amplifier that was not present in the sound before it was picked up by microphones is distortion.
      Most stereo recordings are made with monophonic microphones. Stereo channel level differences are created by microphone mixing console level controls.

      @@paulsebring6930 I totally agree with the science quotes. You are quite right in your descriptions of ILD and ITD. Since we know that added harmonics from a tube amplifier will add sounds at higher frequencies it is logical to assume that this can contribute to better inter aural level difference (ILD) and this is precisely how tubes can improve imaging between the speakers. Tubes also help intelligibility of sounds as harmonics strengthen audibility of the fundamental - this can be a key benefit in Rock where mid range can be busy and loud. The Beatles found that Vox tube amp distortion (harmonics) made their guitars audible above screaming audiences. Tubes have their place as any guitarist can explain even though technically tubes tend to add more distortion than SS.

    The magic in my experience comes with a good single ended directly heated triode power amplifier. I find vocals in particular sound more 'in the room' and I believe it's due to second harmonic distortion plus a very simple minimum component signal path. My thoughts. Most of the questions posed to Paul(and I would add most of the innumerable RUclips audio videos) is that there is a focus on doing ONE particular thing which will create some audible change which is pre-ordained by only that change. IMHO,any change in the entire music reproduction chain will affect a change. The problem is the question ofmaking any change which will guarantee one desired effect. I don’t think that is possible.

    I have no doubt the Stellar phono amp is better than my little Tavish tube-based phono stage. BUT it costs multiple times more, and quite frankly the Tavish is really, REALLY good. But in regard to tube rolling, absolutely yes, that is a huge advantage. I’ve pretty much settled on a valve complement for my little ‘flea watt’ integrated amp. I’ve swapped out every tube and more than once. All made a difference, but perhaps the biggest was the rectifier - I’m now running a vintage (early 50s?) Sylvania Type 80 which is noticeably better and kicks the butt of the rectifier that shipped with the amp.

    It depends on the exact circuit design, the characteristics of passive parts, and several other factors.
    And of oourse most people who know only a little about such things will automatically presume
    that the ubiquitous 12AX7 or one of the more exotic varieties of it is "the" tube to use.
    However, there are tubes that will produce more obvious "improvements" ---
    types that unfortunately cann'ot easily be substituted for a 12AX7 and may be quite difficult to obtain these days.

    I am a tube preamp convert and really love what it has added/improved in my digital streaming and file based system. And the great thing and advantage of tube preamps is that upgrading tubes can be relatively cheap to buy, experiment and roll, and the tubes generally last many years longer than power output tubes.
    There are some very good and cheap chinese units like FX audio tube 01 and tube 03 that are surprisingly good entry points, but might not suit everyone...as they only have a single source input, and the stock power brick is cheap n nasty, and the stock chinese tube are politely questionable (OK rubbish)... But the metal casing and internals are well made and put together.
    So with a better power brick or PSU and some GE or Voskhod tubes it is a great and affordable way to try out tubes...all done for under £50!
    Also the only slightly strange thing about some tubes designs is that they can sometimes be microphonic and pick up external sounds and also pick up wifi internet pulse/clicking interference, so need careful placement and positioning. I have not experienced these issues personally, but a friend did struggle initially with his schitt freya preamp, but a little moving around and the problems were solved.

    Everyone seems to endow vacuum tubes with magical properties they do not possess. They are electronic devices, like transistors, and can be good or bad depending of the circuit they are in. Having said this, the last solid state preamp I owned was back in the '90's, a Parasound as a matter of fact. Parasound makes good stuff. Adding more stuff will not make it better. If you want better imaging, you need new speakers. Point source or line source please. The best imaging, by far, I have ever heard, and I have heard Paul's IRSs, came from a pair of Vision Acoustics Soloists. The company was around in the mid '90's, made about 80 pairs of speakers and went out of business. The secret formula was being a true point source, a piezo tweeter was bonded to the cone of an 8" woofer and moved with the woofer. Both drivers were in phase all of the time. In order to keep doppler effect under control, they limited the woofer excursion, in my opinion it's fatal flaw, restricting dynamics. Specs were lousy, 40hz-15khz, acoustic suspension--needed at least 20 watts, beautifully constructed, and expensive, $1,800 in 1995. About $2,200 if you bought the matching stands. I own a pair of these, paid $200 for them, and the image is there no matter what I drive them with. No else has ever done this before or since. The closest thing I can think of now would be a KEF LS-50, a speaker I have not heard, but it gets lots of raves.

    Could this 3D/holographic imaging have more to with the input, interstage, and output transformers? Or even inductors in these circuits? Phase shift & electromagnetic crosstalk (in the subtle addition harmonics imparted by these types of components) certainly can participate in the holographic sound, no? But as you wrapped up the speaker placement and room certainly make up most of the 3D image (at least in what I’ve experienced).

The 7293 (50 Watt) chip-amp has a holographic sound stage that rivals most discrete transistor amps. The (theoretical) reason is that the internal components are perfectly matched and never drift.

    Comparing to jFETs, tubes give 6dB to noise in a phono preamp (because of 200-300F temperature), and have a terrible microphonic effect. And by the way, Douglas Self proved that NE5532 is the most optimal opamp in terms of signal/noise ratio, and of course it's better that your TL071. So, I'm confident that there is no need to use tubes in a phono preamp. Besides, with jFETs it's easy to use batteries.
    But if we talk about a linear pre-amplifier, electrostatic headphones amplifier, or sometimes about a power amplifier (push/pull, ultra linear or triode mode, except one for a sub-woofer, where I'd like to find a G class amp), then well... tubes allow to create the shortest signal path. And I would swap them only for Luxman, Accuphase, or similar.

    "There you go"......as the tube is wobbling like a weeble wobble and clearly not even in the socket. Next time make sure we can't see the top of the tube Paul, Haha!

    Paul please stop dissing tube power amplifiers at every opportunity, good ones kick solid-state all over the listening room.

    I've got a tube buffer that I have tried between the preamp & the power amps & I just think it degrades the sound quality.It can also be used as a preamp but again really poor quality. Not at all convinced.

    holographic? that is a total mis-use of the term;

      @Paulmcgowanpsaudio  3 года назад

      Well, John, I would argue for a little bit of poetic leeway when using the term. Of course a hologram is specific to light but in this case, we're using it to describe a recreating three dimensional image of sound which, when you hear it, justifies the word hologram. In a metaphorical sense.
