- Sitting with Jeff Mao at the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy, NYC rapper and producer Ka talked about growing up in Brownsville, the escapism of art, the reality of life as a man, and the patience needed to find and accept your own voice. #RBMA #rap

Ka witnessed the genesis of hip-hop growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn. He learned how to become a rapper first with Natural Elements and later as half of Nightbreed. But it wasn't until his first album, Iron Works, made its way to GZA that things began to change after the Wu-Tang MC had him guest on his 2008 track “Firehouse.” By the time Ka’s next LP, Grief Pedigree, dropped in 2012, he’d honed his stark, minimal style to perfection and has been acclaimed for it since. In control of everything - rhymes, beats, videos, distribution - Ka is a single-minded force in rap.

a coworker showed me KA just before we all lost our jobs due to COVID (I was a stagehand in Austin TX) and his music got me through my homelessness, so lucky to have stumbled upon his music it’s truly so good, pure art
Damn bruh hope you good now 🙏🏼
Glad you made it through
HOPE YOU FLY NOW ❤ FROM 🇿🇦
Much respect to Ka. Always been one of the best.
KA & Apollo Brown album would be amazing ;)
yo pleaseeeeee make that happen! with some soul samples and shit.......wow.....
Mello Music Group SIGN HIIIIM!
I need this to happen ASAP
Ka and Quelle Chris are 2 of my favorite rappers.
Ka: “You ever like, have an artist that you like, and then you see the interview? And you’re like, ‘Damn, I like them even more now!’ Because you learned something else about the artist. That’s part of being real. Like, that person’s a nice dude. Make you root for them even more. I think it’s the genuineness of it. You know.”
How meta!
And... that exactly what this interview did for me ✅💯
nope
To get what we need, we did what we must...
Just!
"Survived ruins was it my doing or fate? We made it thru we made it thru we made it thru"
The hermit and recluse is classic hands down
Ka is such a realistic great role model for an artist. He's not the natural prodigy like a Nas, a Mozart, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson. Ka worked hard and grew into the respected talented artist he is currently and wasn't always that way. It's a great juxtaposition to the stereotypical spotlight talent.
whenever i listen to KA's music i always go into that focused , no-bullshit mode of thinking.
Anytime I'm listening to Ka I want nobody talking to me approaching me don't even look at me
Unoo
Dead end hip hop put me on. Orpheus vs the sirens, honor killed the samurai are 10/10. But the academy gave Cardi B rap albulm of the year.
The Earth IsASeriesOfTubes corporate suits can’t rate real rap.
This nigga is a firefighter????? Goated
Or just sit in and listen dead quiet and takin it in with you, but usually they’re already in the know.
Seeing Ka smile is the most crazy thing because of how stoic he is
what a genuine person.
His wisdom and humility are a pleasure to experience.
this is so fucking honest i like him 100x more now. never knew he’d be this introverted lmao
“i don’t wanna annotate my rhymes because you might hear something that’s dope to you and i don’t wanna fuck it up by saying this is what i said” spottt onnnnnnnnn
I hate that they cut out the music clips now, heavily takes away from the vibe and pacing of the lecture. It was great when we got to watch DOOM sit and listen to his own shit with everyone else. Its not like any of these songs can't be easily found on youtube in much higher quality.
EDIT: wow "alright lets set the tone with this video" and y'all cut it??? maaaaaan yall on point with the guests and the whole joint but yalli playing with the broadcasting now
Thats because the RUclips copyright algorithm can bring down the entire video if it feels like it LOL
@@chosenonebeats which is insane. Dude writes and produces his own music.
@@chosenonebeats exactly. It's too risky leaving it in there knowing youtube will take it down or not allow you to monetize it. I opened a separate window and just pulled up the songs in as I listened along.
Roots... For realLLLL' thO'! .. A1 interview,... cool artist. Been had my ear to Ka'..since Reloaded' with Roc.. so A1 on that. And, the host of the show is A1.. great questions,... the whole vibration was dope, and that audience was a 'funky bunch'. If the viewers could of just seen the videos as well ..would of just been the cherry on top'. Much respect,
Nacho from the 9one6
> 52:21 <
Are you prepared to do what you’re doing when it ain’t cool anymore?
That’s a PASSION.
Thank you, Ka
I know Ka personally and if I had to describe him in one word I’d say…..GENUINE!!!!
that's dope
Ka's pen is untouchable.
Him and DOOM are jus cut from a different cloth. Truly genuine
and roc marci
and woods
and Mach!
@@johnwayne7201 true dat
Yo, the 5 names in this thread are the guys man. Marci, Ka, Mach, DOOM and Woods are all I need rn.
A true artist. That’s it. Pure, real, authentic.
Illest writer ever ! People need to stop sleeping on Ka
Period!
Sebajun3030 fa real bruh he got a whole different kinda pen 😂
5 years later. The greatest.
@@ENDOFFEB dropped 2 albums like it was nothing 😤
@@VividEquation both quality as always too. his consistency and artistry are unmatched
Someone tell Ka he can keep going off tangents, we need more of this
PLEASE somebody get the message to him. His choices of words just talking are like reading his lyrics on paper...RATHER UNIQUE
This man been a firefighter since 99... Ill MC, plus a hero. Honorable, salute to that man.
Funny how he talks about how interviews and artists' background can enhance their music because this video just moved Ka into my Top 5.
I need one of these for Mach Hommy. Plus a Ka and Mach collaboration would be INSANE!
Damn KA fighting flames for pay and spiting flames for fun how ironic!
This artist is too real, I connect his words and stories in this interview to all the projects I’ve heard him on. Emotionally and logically. I think it’s a shame that this level of authenticity isn’t appreciated more widely in the game.
Much respect from Sweden
cuz the game is widely jewish😆
Hands down my favorite emcee. Such a genuine, sincere person. Grateful for this interview!
how ka isnt huge is beyond me. Dudes name barely shows up in Spotify. Hes great
I've never clicked on a recommended video faster than I did this one.
i remember aesop rock shouting him out back in 11 after he was releasing the grief pedigree videos. dude is one of the best lyricist ive ever heard. add on to that his beats and cinematography is aon point
Moving when he gets that standing ovation. He deserves every second of love & respect for sharing his soul on countless classic albums. Peace
Give this man his flowers while he still here 🙏🏾❤
Extremely rare to be able to not compromise your art for the bag 💰 .......I knew he was a working man by just listening to his album. Pure art.....no filter. The album is "Descendants of Cain".....I stumbled on it on Amazon music. What a blessing
What an articulate dude. The lack of ego is so damn refreshing
The best 1:10:00 I've ever spent on youtube.
interviewer right on point...not hogging the conversation and just dishing out interesting questions.
"Too much grace to tremble, hands steady as a surgeon" what a voice!
I've been fucking with his music heavily, and it's so cool to see him so humble
KA's music is an inspiration to all real writers, street poets and hiphop heads...just aiming to master his pen, fuck money and the cares of men. His life is a testimony that hard work will eventually get you what you deserve even if it's 20 years after trying
“Just aiming to master his pen, fuck money and the cares of men” that’s a bar fam lol
He was already one of my favorite artists and I didn't think I could like him any more. This interview proved me wrong. Such an unreal artist, but an even greater person.
when i first copped grief pedigree i had no idea what to expect...since then hes been putting out banger after banger i put all my boys up on his music...
Grief pedigree is my Favorite in the KA catalog but all his music is dope tho💯
william wright grief pedigree is my favorite also
since GZA put his song Fire House on Protocols I've been hooked...
Woah Mach Hommy name drop in 2016
It’s crazy discovering this as I enter my mature rap career.
“You ever have a artist that you like and you see the interview and you be like damn I like em even more now”
Literally what’s happening right now as I’m watching this
At first, I didn't feel Days with Dr. Yen Lo. Then I listened again and I was like: wait, wait, wait, run that back. KA helps you de-brainwash yourself from how you get these days when you put on a record and after a few seconds you move on. Sign of the times. I totally feel what he said about that. And about what he said about doing shows. I get that. This was a dope interview
Yen Lo was a character that brainwashed people too. Funny.
This is the realest lecture I've seen on this channel so far.
Ka reminds me of Cormega for one reason you can feel the pain in their vocals
Watching this interview for the third time. First time was like 3 years ago. Peace and love from Kenya, Kaseem Ryan
The best living lyricist and rap artist
ka is madly talented and a truly authentic artist
prolly my favourite rbma lecture. brilliant stuff. so inspiring. thanks rbma
KA the truth
This dude don't just make real Hip hop.. He makes 🎨... Incredible artist 👑💯
Ka is a living Legend.
Love how he got comfortable and opened up more as the interview progressed.
Ka is so damn cool bruh
I Love is one of the most beautiful songs. I appreciate this heavy
Met this man back in 2016. He is truly as humble and kind hearted as he appears here. An incredible Poet/MC and standup guy.
30 Keys changed my life. I live by the words "if you doing it to eat is still a sin". All respect to Ka. One of my heroes. Up there with Jay Z for me
@active one...Sorry....Jay-Z doesn’t even come close to Ka’s pen. This guy is in his own category.
Ka is my number one inspiration as a writer, as an artist, and as a human being
every day every week every month
sometimes you had to bleed, as long as you aint front
*sparks up*
Had never heard of ka till Orpheus vs the sirens and now I feel like he is a rare gem that is under appreciated. Much love for the king
Truly awesome interview. Speaks to me so much as a late blooming reggae artist. I especially like the line about no one wanting to listen to a 20 year old blues player. I've been singing some of my songs for more than two decades, and I'm finally understanding what some of what I'm saying really means.
One of my favorite Mc's of all time sun! Word up! And he's Instrumentals are mad ill .
Fam the way dude talked about his grandpops getting stabbed up that casually I was like damn! It was genuinely scary shit and it was like he's giving you the plot of some regular movie
A Marty's reward is the best album of 2021
One of the greatest rappers of all time
Dude is amazing
"It was crazy, but that's what made us".Much respect to Ka
Ka is one of the greatest lyricists
52:16 - 53:27 is the best part of the interview, hands down! So much truth!
ka is a legend man
it is so unbelievable how a man so talented is SO underrated (mainly due to his push for being an independent self made artist) industry is so backwards shit bug the hell outta me
Instant fucking FAN. Fuck, this man is the TRUTH
This lecture is real inspiring. Much respect to Ka.
I always return to this interview.
In blues, you ain't official til you 50 !
love from london
Introspection at its best....And KA definitely is one the best 💯
KA is definitely one of a kind, great interview! Love the new album and The KA preservation 1200 B.C EP that came out a few years back is one of my all time favorite EPs.
Day Job that came out last year.
Claude Mackay No. 2014
in these days of rapidly changing trends and flash in the pan music careers.. plus the hyper-focus on youth and newness.. as an independent artist that has been making music on the side while trying to live a balanced life and hold down steady work for over 20 years... the slow burn persistence of an artist like KA is profoundly inspiring.
This man should be more recognized and should be on the list for greatest rappers of all time. He is quite an addicting rapper and I can't stop listening to him because what he speaks he's always real and makes sense! Super DUPER underrated, but are you still undefeated!
Thank you so much KA!
Wish they had let the music play instead of fading out. Still a great interview tho, I'm so glad that I've been getting into Ka!
Infinite respect to Ka.
Never watched an interview of his but this was amazing, btw ka top 10 lyricist of all time and there’s no debate.
This man is an artist. Protect KA man.
I really like his shiny head, he seems like a cool guy
This interview is breath taking and very necessary we need a new one
Appreciative of his craft and thought process. There are lines I’m still catching as songs replay. Tangents are encouraged, always. Brooklyn, Love.
This caught me off guard, nice to see Ka on here. Thank you RBMA
Thank you Ka for putting up youtube videos so we can find your stuff. I need a Ka +Doom collab in the 2020s tho.
For those who don't know who ka is please open your ears and listen to his music
What an amazing artist! Thank you for opening my eyes for this incredible lyricist!
i need a Ka + DOOM collabo!
That would be insane.
Yes it would...Dope 💯💯💯🎤🎤
Ka + Doom + Masta killah
Ka + Ka + Ka. My dream team.
am i the only one wanting a Max b/Ka colab , i feel like they would work well together
Monastic Ka.
Thank you for being vulnerable and allowing the older generation to have grace with our love and practice for the genre, despite our age.
Thanks for this
I wish this was longer. such a great guy
I love this man.
so glad to have found him. a true, one of a kind artist
I been a fan ok ka since day 1...never knew he was down with natural elements...wow!
This was a cool interview. Very inspiring.
Much respect KA and natural elements dope interview 💯
KA is one guy I’m studying on how to be an independent artist. Great interview.
