Glad to see your conversion to the Mazda faith. I've had three over the last 20 years - an Astina (the FUN version of the 323), the Mazda 3 (damned reliable) and lastly in a back to the future move, a REAL Mazda: the RX8 - a supercar which will pass anything except a gas station (brilliant ride, though). Next may be a B50 pick-up for sheer practicality (love the open air trunk).

Scotty, we just bought a 2023 Mazda 3 hatchback Preferred package with 2.5 L no turbo. I was worried about the DI, direct injection gas. The dealer recommended we bring the car in every 15K miles for a fuel induction cleaning for the carbon build up on the valve stems. Should we do this service every 15K? We always change our oil every 5K miles and only use Shell, Mobile or Exxon gas.

    • @DansModelBench
      @DansModelBench Год назад

You can clean the carbon cleanup yourself with a visit to the auto shop for a can of cleaner to drop in your tank if that worries you. Personally I wouldn't be worrying about it until the engine has some higher mileage like 80000 miles on it. These engines have been around since 2012 when they launched in the Mazda 6 and they aren't known for having bad carbon buildup. That said, Americans over service their cars compared to many other countries/markets. Your oil change interval is much lower then what Mazda Australia or Europe would recommend for the same engine and car. In the end if you get it done by the dealer, it shouldn't hurt the car and you'll be helping the dealer principal to buy a nice house for his third wife.

As a Mazda 6 owner with the 2.5 liter turbo engine, I beg to differ. Heck yea you need the extra power of the turbo 😂. Not everyone wants to drive extremely boring cars. There is no reason why turbo engines can’t be designed and built to last as long or longer than non-turbo engines. Case in point, turbo Diesel engines on semi trucks last for a million miles. Yes if you take a non-turbo engine and slap on a turbo then the engine will not last as long because it wasn’t designed to handle the turbo and the extra pressures and temperatures.

The new Miata is the 2.0L variant and I’ve seen them get up to 40mpg. Hi Scotty! You talked about almost everything I loved about the new Mazda Skyactiv cars. Mazda always surprises me with the innovation of their technologies and engineering. For example, the Skyactiv G engine you had there could also switch from an Atkinson cycle to and Otto cycle on demand for power. And their skyactive drive 6-speed autos shift very smoothly despite engaging their lock up clutch inside their torque converter earlier in the rpm. They also injected their jinba-ittai handling design from the MX-5 into their sedans and SUVs so they feel even more zoom zoom in corners.
Asides from Mazda, what is your expert opinion about Honda, and in particular their new range of e:HEV hybrids? Although they refer to it as an eCVT, there is actually no transmission aside for a single overdrive gear that's engaged via a clutch for highway cruising. Is their twist of an almost purely electric motor driven hybrid power train a sensible piece of engineering?

Mazda's main "Skyactiv" star is not the engine, but the FW6A(X)-EL "Skyactiv-Drive" 6-speed auto. The torque converter's multi-plate clutch locks up around 90% of the time, even in 1st gear. That makes the driving experience (and drivetrain efficiency) virtually identical to what you'll get in a well-driven manual transmission.
And for the UMPTEENTH TIME!!!: Mazdas *DO NOT* have *ANY* Toyota tech in them!!!!!!!!! The Mazda/Toyota partnership was founded in 2018. The Skyactiv-Drive came out in *2011* .
    - "I doesn't need premium gas"
No it doesn't, but Skyactiv's are known to run better with higher octane.

That said, the MX-5's 6-sp. automatic is in fact an Aisin sourced unit (at least it is on the "C" and "D" generations). But then, that's a longitudinal RWD transmission, and the FW6A(X)-EL is a FWD/AWD transaxle. You'll note that Mazda's literature never makes the claim that the MX-5 automatic is "Skyactiv." They only make that claim for the manual transmission (which is in fact Mazda sourced).

I'm not teaching you this you are an experienced mechanic but i think when you said about diesel engine your tongue has twisted somewhat..!

My first car was a 2008 Mazda 3, fun as hell, fuel efficient, and lots of space because of the hatchback. I bought it at 205000 km's and drove it for 30,000 more km's. Only thing that went on it was the TCM which is placed under the battery for some reason so it melted. $900 for a new one. Had some suspension wear that needed replacing eventually, but it has zero rust and ran smooth through winters.
When I finished college and got my first real job, I bought a 2017 Mazda 3 GT brand new. It has the larger 2.5 NA engine, probably the same as the one in the video, and I drove that 100,000km's, never had any issue, car ran as if it was brand new when I sold it. Only ever did oil changes.
Eventually I traded to something bigger because I needed the space for my dog and my new baby. Decided on a 2015 Subaru Forester XT over the CX-5 only because the trunk is much smaller than the Forester and I wanted my greyhound to fit in the back. The Subaru drives extremely similarly to the Mazda though of course with the turbo it packs more of a punch, and doesn't corner as well.
The two manufacturers are so similar in design and philosophy though. I'm planning to get a second car and considering going back to a Mazda 3 or CX-30 as my first manual transmission. Just something I can daily for my long commute, has a great sound and entertainment system, and is comfortable. Only issues I had with the 3 were the FWD and the lower ground clearance.

My 2015 Mazda 6 has been a great car. It's been faultless, handles like it's on rails, and does great in winter weather. I've done as good as 42 mpg with it too. I gather Mazda discontinued the 6, but they're working on a new one due out next year. It's supposedly front engine/rear wheel drive.

PS Mazda made a wagon version of the 6 too, which would be perfect for me. Unfortunately they didn't sell it in the US.

Bought my wife a 2019 CX5 new. Traded in the biggest POS ever made Jeep Cherokee for the Mazda.
Since 2019 the Mazda has not given one issue. The electronic calipers on the brakes are the only issue I've had.
Between my 2020 TRD and the Mazda I'm sold on certian Japaneese vehicles and will likely never buy American again.

I saw the "FLOOD MAZDA WAKEFIELD" label on the car in the opening scene and thought Scotty was going to tell us how they label flood-damaged cars there - but no. I assume it must be the dealer's name & location.

Try J-B Weld extreme heat to fix the hole. Be ready to use it all since it is an epoxy.

My 2010 Mazda speed 3 went up to 220k before I sold it. Still ran fine no check engine light

That's the car that I was considering. Just as good, if not better than Toyota's or Honda. I want something Japanese built and get rid of my crappy Ford Escape. Plenty big enough for a single guy.
