I started making films at the age of 8 with a friend of mine. We filmed them with Legos, at my place, on my mum's phone. We got better over time, moved away from Legos, now we're both 16 and make live action stuff in greenscreens that we merge with 3d rendered creations in blender and Unreal engine. I started editing in the free windows movie maker, moved to magix video and I'm now using davinci resolve and premiere Pro. You'll get the equipment over time. Slowly but surely. Hey dude, found your channel today. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, sir. I've written 7 shorts and a few features. I've been saying, "I'll get to it later." If there's anything this lock-down has taught me is that tomorrow isn't guaranteed/ I have a five minute short called "Friday Date Night, COVID Style." I went and bought a EOS T7 and decent mics, and a workable lighting set-up. You and another gentleman, YCImaging have taught me what I can do with what I have. So me and my friends had the idea of filming a short film and we’re 15. We all made our own original characters that we wanted to act as, sadly they didn’t all fit and they needed some changed or assigned a role. I currently only wrote the outline to the story. Since we cant buy props we’re making our own costumes and it up to them to make or buy one since it’s there design. I’m gonna start the script idea and my other friend probably going to finish it (since she writes a lot more stories). The hardest thing is where we can film, since the beginning the main character is in a feild, and then stumbles to an abandoned house, (which we don’t have). we’re gonna try and hopefully frame it perfectly to my backyard and make my shed into a “house”. My friend is also the only one who know good with photography and lighting and needs to figure out how to frame that together. The rest of the story is either in a feild or in the woods. And then I’m also editing and creating the sound effects, also I’m need to do makeup for everyone. Not to mention the lack of acting ability since almost none of us have experience :7 and the woods we have to film at is actually by my old elementary school that’s always crowded with people. Update:I started the script with my friend(who is much better a writing then me) is gonna help
I just stand my phone somewhere, press play and then edit the parts out and keep the important parts, my jaunra is action so I usually add special effects and they pretty much carry my movies
Man, I'm in love with your style! I meant both this video and the backwoods style you just showed. I'm an absolute novice filmmaker and I'm glad I stumbled upon this video.
I am from Spain and when I was 18 I made a film with some high school classmates and some friends.....and with a 15€ (17 dollars more or less) budget Damn, I spent a year and a half
Yeah, there were a lot of things the actors did that didn't make sense for character or could have done to sell the story better but I liked the part at the end where he tells us what lenses to use to get each shot so I gave it a like anyway 👍 Otherwise the film was confusing at best and shows other writer/directors the importance of always having a well written (and re-written) script
Robert Mugica more or less, the mother is in a casual sex type relationship with d4 and they were supposed to be together for Valentine's Day, but then the daughter was broken up with or broke up with her man, so she went to her mother for comfort. And then d4 shows up and ruins everything 😂 (this is just my take on it, I don't know anything 100%)
Basically we are led to believe that the young woman and d4 have some sort of relationship going on and she is ignoring him on valentines day as she is spending time with her mother. We later find out that it was actually the older woman who was seeing d4, and that she viewed the relationship as casual.
Dude, you are THE GUY for actually learning how to make films. I find it hilarious when, whether in a book or video, someone starts teaching about the process and spends half the time on contracts, getting a producer (are you serious?), the ADP, and then spends about 10-15 percent of the book/video on actually the craft of making a film. Talk about neither understanding or delivering to your market. For every filmmaker who will be working with a script supervisor, there are 10,000 who will be working with the kit lens that came with their Canon 6D. They just don't get it, but you do. THX.
Dude this is awesome! So inspirational! I’m actually in Los Angeles and I’m in the early stages of putting a story together myself and this actually answered a lot of my questions. Thank you.
Hey man I must say that this really helped! I'm a teenager and in December I'm shooting a Horror comedy and after lots of preparation I realised a problem. Money! I watched this video and it gave me lots of tips and helped a lot! Thanks man! You're legendary!
what happens when you have No Actors AND No Budget ? ! ? ! ? ! and when you DO shoot this EPIC tale, then were do you show it off ?? so many Q's for you
D4Darious, I gotta hand it to ya man. I’ve used all of your tips on almost all of my content on my channel and it’s been working great do far. Thanks man!
When he says no budget, he means no budget for that particular film. Gear and equipment can be used for multiple films, so their costs don't go toward the film's expenses. Props, Actors, Crew salaries, locations, all that stuff is the expenses that are incurred for that particular film, so that's what he means when he says he only used $10 to make the film, he spent no money on that stuff.
Yo, Darius Brit here. Can you please explain the ending? I don't understand why there was a slight smile and a cheers at the end. What was the message? What was the story value? . Thanks for the helpful content. Peace brother.
So, when I was in film school my teachers weren't supposed to explain things to me because then the movie would lose it's meaning? That's not a really good advice and I have to politely disagree. If one doesn't understand your movie it's fine but if more than one don't, you either made experimental cinema or there is something wrong with the plot. It's nothing to be ambarassed about, especially in this field you never stop learning no matter how old you are. Sorry for my english but it's not my first language!
me and my friend are planning on creating a RUclips channel in the future where we make short films, and eventually making our own company where we make our own professional films. for now, we are using her iPhone as a camera, and luckily we have ins with the theater kids so we have plenty of actors to choose from. this video was super helpful for us, thank you so much😊

I just stand my phone somewhere, press play and then edit the parts out and keep the important parts, my jaunra is action so I usually add special effects and they pretty much carry my movies
can you show us how edit this short movie?
Man, I'm in love with your style! I meant both this video and the backwoods style you just showed. I'm an absolute novice filmmaker and I'm glad I stumbled upon this video.
I am from Spain and when I was 18 I made a film with some high school classmates and some friends.....and with a 15€ (17 dollars more or less) budget
Damn, I spent a year and a half
The thinking shots are phenomenal!! Such good acting directions
I didnt get the short film but I was well made
Yeah, there were a lot of things the actors did that didn't make sense for character or could have done to sell the story better but I liked the part at the end where he tells us what lenses to use to get each shot so I gave it a like anyway 👍
Otherwise the film was confusing at best and shows other writer/directors the importance of always having a well written (and re-written) script
I agree
Robert Mugica more or less, the mother is in a casual sex type relationship with d4 and they were supposed to be together for Valentine's Day, but then the daughter was broken up with or broke up with her man, so she went to her mother for comfort. And then d4 shows up and ruins everything 😂 (this is just my take on it, I don't know anything 100%)
Stacy's mom had it going on
Basically we are led to believe that the young woman and d4 have some sort of relationship going on and she is ignoring him on valentines day as she is spending time with her mother. We later find out that it was actually the older woman who was seeing d4, and that she viewed the relationship as casual.
I'm gonna do one! Thanks!
10:55 why is that thing smiling at me ?
The smiling cabinet is fine. What I see is that the shitter room doesn't have a door
THX.
Tutorial for the "Back woods" shot PLEASE
timelapse
@@cinematicelements8852 what is time lapse?
Nicolas Pratt lol google it
I am having so much fun I can't wait to get started making movies with my family!!! thank you for the tips!!
8:19 Oh... well... okay then. Didn't see that one coming.

Yeah, same....mm-hmm...interesting.
why do you think they do that accually xD I thought they didn't want him to get inside xD
Lol I love this dude man he been motivating the shit out of me with these short flim techniques going to get my equipment this month....
"You got 10 bucks laying around? That's plenty of money!"
First step: Crowdfunding.
11:53 love the added info 😂! So relatable, like eating some of mom's Halloween candy before halloween
"You can get it done for real cheap out here in the backwoods."
Darius sounds like the old curmudgeon at the start of a slasher film.
I really liked how everything looked
"You got 10 bucks layin around?
Thats plenty of money...
Go shoot somethin...
FOOO!"
You got me to laugh.
Like if you laughed too.
Im currently writing a short film and this really helped. For a first time writer i havent got a clue to making a film. Thank you so much
Im starting a production company called BACKWOODS haha
Dude this is awesome! So inspirational! I’m actually in Los Angeles and I’m in the early stages of putting a story together myself and this actually answered a lot of my questions. Thank you.
Ok so I have no budget and my only gear is a Nikon D3300, 18-55mm and 50mm 1.8 lenses and a tripod. I'll get it done.
D4Darious! This was one of the first video that inspired me to film. Showing some love to this clip and your channel. Thank you!
I don't even have a mic, that's how low budget I am right now lol
Same here
Dude, record your audio with a separate cellphone. Just use an audio recorder. It's a great trick.
and when you DO shoot this EPIC tale, then were do you show it off ??
so many Q's for you
I guess start networking with people who have similar interests
D4Darious, I gotta hand it to ya man. I’ve used all of your tips on almost all of my content on my channel and it’s been working great do far. Thanks man!
You should have made a Meth Story 😁😁😁 It was a good short film 👍👍
Glad you dug it Big D! Thanks for commenting.
I GOT THE REFERENCE!
This is great advice! I appreciate this
technically you need to count the equipment you need to shoot the film toward the budget :P
Pawel Kapica only if you don't have equipment to start with.
I love this guy, he’s informative but in a super creative way
...will money buy me friends? :(
MrLeviNielsen No. Just Yes Men 🙂
MrLeviNielsen Yes ? Mayb idk
MrLeviNielsen not good ones.
Yes... yes it will. If you're not using the word "friend" in the strictest of definitions.
Yes, it will.
This is simply gold! Thank you for a such inspiration and explanation, keep up the amazing work. The content you make is really good! Gold pure gold.
Yo, Darius Brit here. Can you please explain the ending? I don't understand why there was a slight smile and a cheers at the end. What was the message? What was the story value? . Thanks for the helpful content. Peace brother.
Nathan King if you have to explain art, it loses it's meaning
So, when I was in film school my teachers weren't supposed to explain things to me because then the movie would lose it's meaning? That's not a really good advice and I have to politely disagree. If one doesn't understand your movie it's fine but if more than one don't, you either made experimental cinema or there is something wrong with the plot. It's nothing to be ambarassed about, especially in this field you never stop learning no matter how old you are. Sorry for my english but it's not my first language!
me and my friend are planning on creating a RUclips channel in the future where we make short films, and eventually making our own company where we make our own professional films. for now, we are using her iPhone as a camera, and luckily we have ins with the theater kids so we have plenty of actors to choose from. this video was super helpful for us, thank you so much😊
"how to make a no budget film?"
but i first need $2000 for a camera like that :/
I'm late, but use your phone bro
Just use a phone and a filmmaking app like filmic pro and you're good to go! Check out the channel iPhoneographers, he goes into detail about filmmaking on phones and minimal gear.
Guys he is not talking about the camera when he said you can shoot a film for $10. I think the film was good and I live all his videos. Very knowledgeable.
Why did the girls not want D4 to go inside the camper? How is the ending a resolution?
"Valentine's Day'... maybe he was the ex?
Mom for daughter. All happy on a Valentine's Day!!
The mom knew the daughter didnt want to deal with him anymore, so i guess to resolve the conflict once and for all, she let him smash as an ultimatum.
I have definitely fallen in love with your channel. Tomorrow morning I plan to scout a location for a short film I plan to shoot that night!
😂😂😂 dude ur 🎥 was about smashing. Short sweet simple ❤️ it
Pra Autoss dude you kill it😂😂👍🏻👍🏻
a film about a film... brilliant. great job bro
If only the Hobbit producers would have been aware of that!
lol
Thanks man! You helped me make my first short film. It's not excellent, but nice enough to me for a first. You're the best man.
