The two big ups for the Studio Display are the webcam and Thunderbolt ports. The price is a bit much. $1200 would be the sweet spot. That being said, I'm rocking a Dell 27" with my 14" MBP and it works beautifully.

I returned the LG UltraFine 27” 5K display back to Apple and purchased the Apple Studio with matching extended keyboard with mouse. I also got it with the regular glass since I feel it looks brighter than the nano etched matte finish. I did anty up $400 more for the really nice stand that raises and lowers it. For me, I had just spent.$1300 to Apple and I really wanted an Apple monitor to match my MacBook Pro 16 I just brought home in Feb 2022. The display on my LG UF was gorgeous compared to some cheaper $590 monitors that I had tried prior. So, I just happen to fall into the right time for the upgraded monitor after so many years of silence from Apple. I justify the price since I want all the bells and whistles Apple gives that is already spoken in this video. I cannot wait to set it up on arrival day and share it with everyone! I like all my stuff to match from stock, I was always that type of person where the look was important as well as the performance. In 1982 I was one of the individuals that purchased the Commodore 64 with matching diskdrive 1541 and matching Commodore Monitor 1702 which had composite cables to beat out RF single and monochrome monitors of that time, it was the beginning of Svideo and Commodore introduced that. So, I was 12 years old loving that type of system in my bedroom, now at the age of 52 I am repeating the look just with Apple and Apple alone products on my desktop. Thanks to all these wonderful replies that talk about how much they love the LG UF and this new Apple Studio display!

Massively overpriced considering that the iMac has had 5K since 2014 and this is just a minor upgrade from the LG ultra fine that has been around for years already. It's okay if those minor upgrades are a big deal to you, but it's still not a true consumer monitor for whom those upgrades don't matter in the slightest.

"but it's still not a true consumer monitor" - Correct, it isn't and it was never supposed to be. There is no market for a so called consumer monitor made out of an aluminium unibody with Thunderbolt interface as those people want things simple and would buy their cheap iMac. Who really buys displays and computing hardware separate? Gamers, Video-cutters/Designer/Photographers - these are not consumers.

I'd have preferred a 27 inch iMac with the MAX / ULTRA options. It would almost definitely be cheaper than the monitor + Mac Studio (cheapest $3600) and this new setup takes up more space on a desk and involves more wires. Not sure why more people aren't a little bummed about this from a value perspective, since the iMac it's replacing was only $1800 and was an all-in-one solution with the same screen.

The reason why it doesn't support daisy chaining with another 5k display is a limitation of Thunderbolt 3/4. It doesn't support that much bandwidth over a single thunderbolt port on the computer. It's the same reason why it doesn't support 5K at 120hz.

Longing for a replacement ever since my apple display started to buzz and eventually die. My question is if you can't daisy chain, and all the ads show more than one monitor usually on a desk, it sounds like you waste some ports on the back of the Mac studio. Also which camera gets used with multiple displays? No one seems to address these issues and curious if Apple would use the A13 for more than camera and stereo duty. Thoughts?

Awesome display. Ordered the complete package which consists of the base Mac Studio and Studio Display with tilt and height adjustable stand. Yeah...that's a lot of money 🤑. However I did offset the cost by selling my M1, 2020 Mac mini for $1,399.
That said here's something you may want to consider regarding the Studio Display. The standard stand with just "Tilt" adjustment only allows 4.5 inches of clearance between your desk and bottom edge of the Studio Display. To put that in perspective the Mac Studio is 3.7 inches tall which leaves only 0.8 inches between it and the bottom edge of the Studio Display.
I'm 5' 7" tall and when seated for a comfortable viewing angle I required 6.5 to 7 inches between my desk and the bottom of my LG UltraFine 5K Display (which was previously sold in Apple Stores as a Mac centric display). My thinking is that if you are my height or taller (equally portioned between torso and leg length) you most likely will not be happy with the Studio Display viewing angle when seated configured with the tilt only stand. ☹.
I don't what Apple's thinking was regarding design of the Studio Display but it seems a mis-step not to make the stands interchangeable to be swapped after ordering within say 15 days. Apple could have made it mandatory that the display be taken to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider for adjustment to limit warranty claims and control inventory. What are your thoughts🤔

Feels pretty bad to have to buy a new display that is more expensive than that imac was PLUS a mac studio, just to have something equivalent to the imac (at least in terms of workflow/experience). It feels like they basically decided to split the display and computer just to nudge people into making 2 expensive purchases instead of 1. But yeah, I went with the mac studio and i'm picking up a LG 32" 4K display at half the price of the apple studio display instead.

    • @knobi3760
      @knobi3760 2 года назад

It's funny that some people see the most generous move of Apple in its history as "they want to trick you in a purchase of two items". If you separate compute and display, you can build a modular, cost-effective system. Apple understands this and this is why they put this (in my opinion affordable) price-tag. The question is not if it is expensive but what are the alternatives? If you buy the Studio Display you can just replace the mac in future according to your needs which is way cheaper than selling an Imac with 50% loss and buying a new one with current hardware. It makes much more sense to buy the Studio Display, buy a (cheap) Mac Mini M1 and replace the Mini M1 at some point with the M2.

Had this comment on appleinsider: "I tried to find LG's 5K display and it's been discontinued (see LG's website). I have to wonder if Apple is taking all of LG's display production. LG's 34" 21:9 display is out of stock but who knows if that will be returning. LG now only sells a designated 4K display. I am hoping the new Studio Display wasn't built from displays LG couldn't sell, especially for a $1300 price tag (no camera or microphone). Amazon has 7 left in stock so once they're sold, LG won't be replacing them with the current model. I did a search and all the other 5K displays are wide or ultra wide and much bigger. I guess they're having issues making a higher density 27" 5K display so the new Studio Display might be the only 5K display available that really works with the Mac." You might have wanted to mention the Out of Stock listing for the LG display on the Apple Store. From what I've read the Studio Display is simply a marginally updated version of the old LG display. Thoughts??
Of course, when there's really nothing on the market at 27" and 5K that works well with a Mac, it appears the new Studio Display is the only game in town. It looks like my upgrade process will go back to how I upgraded 20 years ago with separate display and computer purchases. I might get the Studio Display, connect it to my M1 MBA and all the external Thunderbolt storage I have (yes, spend a little extra and get Thunderbolt drives at least until USB4 max speed external enclosures are available). Give me a year to see how the next generation Macs look like and I'll figure out whether I get an updated mini, a larger laptop or ??????

Its because they added so many ports to the new studio which would have better bandwidth per display. So I imagine they were thinking because we got our ports back we don’t need to stretch each Thunderbolt and lose resolution or stress the graphics when you have 4 Thunderbolt (1 per Display) AND each display has its own separate hub and data stream for accessories.
It does suck but I get it when you have that much extra power and so many ports to spare AND a built in hub on the displays themselves.

I still want the Apple Pro XDR display for my Mac Pro 2019 but $5000 is a lot! Though i love the design so so much! I do like the design of the studio display as well but it's only 60Hz. Apple completely screwed this up. No promotion. No mini led. No XDR. Not even standard HDR. Not to mention it’s only 300 cheaper than an iMac. This is a selfish money grab and no one should buy one. Apple makes great stuff. They just need to stop releasing products that made absolutely no sense to buy. This is just highway robbery.

I agree with you 100 percent. With the 27-inch iMac and the 27-inch iMac Pro both discontinued Apple, Inc. now wants you to pay 35 percent more for a complete system over a larger iMac. Own a 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display and in April, I will carry it into my local Apple retail store and ask them to connect it up to a Mac Studio (i.e. Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 3 cable and then Thunderbolt 3 cable to Thunderbolt 2 cable). If it all works properly, I will order a new Mac Studio but continue to use my 12 year old Cinema Display (smile...smile).

After 30 inch Apple Cinema Display to launch 27 inch even if it is brand-new product seems disappointing somehow. Because people can not afford Apple Pro XDR Display and 27 inch for display not as big as before time. Apple had to catch the time. Actually why Apple does not make a poll for every product line between its users. Finally it would be the best way to decide about products. How is it "outdated"? Color space is good, sharpness excellent (!), camera and microphones (for general use) seem to be good, design is clearly better than 95% of all black plastic monitors. So?
Yes it is essentially the same as on the iMac 5k for the last 5y or so, yet, there are hardly any alternatives with 5k. 4k is not the same, standard 4k is 8,2 MP versus 14,7 megapixels on the Apple display. That is almost 1,8 x as many pixels. With photoshop and Lightroom I have become so used to a 5k display that I would not want to go lower. Would I have wanted a 120Hz mini LED monitor? Yes, and the newest rumors say such a monitor in 27" (!) with way more dimming zones will come at WWDC but you bet it will be 3k at least.

For color accuracy it’s a fantastic monitor if you need color correction for photos or videos or do graphic design. Apple doesn’t cater to high refresh rates because the majority of their professional clients need resolution and color accurate images over high refresh rate.

Unfortunately this screen is like iphone se. It is the same screen as it was in 2017 imac with a lot of disadvantages. Apart from resolution and build quality it has the same color specs as other cheap monitors. I bet it still not uniformly backlit and has slight color shifts. LG, Samsung, Asus and others presented color calibrated oled or mini led screens for around 1500-2000€. So if you need screen for media content creation it is just really bad deal.

I had imac 27 2017 5k and I have to change 3x screen due to bad uniformity and the last one wasn't the best. Don't get me wrong, it is nice screen but not for that price in 2021.
