The Nuclear Option: Deciphering Russia's New Space Threat

  • In a statement on April 24, 2024 National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said, "Russia is developing a new satellite carrying a nuclear device." The capability would violate the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, although it is not deployed and not an immediate threat to anyone's safety. Such a weapon would likely pose a serious challenge to space security and safety, indiscriminately affecting large numbers of satellites and jeopardizing the usability of space for people around the world.
Sullivan's remarks followed a United Nations Security Council vote on a resolution, introduced jointly by the United States and Japan, on Preventing Nuclear Weapons in Space. The resolution called on "UN Member States not to develop nuclear weapons or any other kinds of WMDs specifically designed to be placed in orbit around the Earth." On April 24, 2024, thirteen nations voted in favor, while Russia vetoed the resolution.
Please join the CSIS Aerospace Security Project on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 2:00pm ET for a fireside chat with The Honorable Mallory Stewart, Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability, moderated by Clayton Swope, Deputy Director of the CSIS Aerospace Security Project. In this discussion, Assistant Secretary Stewart will discuss her assessment of the reported Russian anti-satellite capability, what threats it poses to the space environment, and why the UN resolution is an important step in enhancing strategic stability in orbit.
Please note Assistant Secretary Stewart will be taking audience questions. Register to attend the event either in person or online, and submit questions through the event page.
This event is made possible by general support to CSIS.

Sullivan's comment is disingenuous hysteria. But as a military expert and American Space Force Officer, I am willing to address the issue set.

I’m sorry to say they are all crazy our leaders are not exempt; for every every decision that they make is usually taking the hardest freaking route possible when words can solve many things and a commitment to try to deliver them in such a way that it would accomplish. The goal is secondary to their need to use weapons, I could destroy everything that is crazy.

"I want to express respect for the members of the assembly while also acknowledging that we can't shoulder all the blame for historical wrongs. We must take responsibility for our part and address our own issues, but it's unreasonable to expect us to bear the burden for everything that's occurred. Our focus has been on fixing what we can control-our actions and policies-because it's the most logical and practical solution available to us. However, we also hope that others share similar intentions and aren't deceiving us. If they are, then they're only perpetuating the same cycle of challenges within their own country. Our proposed solution is born out of frustration and a desire to end the cycle of strain and distrust. If collaboration isn't feasible, then let's be transparent about it and move forward accordingly. I acknowledge my emotions in this matter, especially given the recent pandemic and global challenges. However, I'm also reminded that cooperation and transparency are vital, as evidenced by international efforts during the pandemic. If there were ill intentions, why would countries like China actively collaborate and share information? It's a testament to the importance of honesty and collaboration in facing global challenges."

It`s are bad for thinking people around the world think like us, that are very law oriented, that have a code of conduct to follow rules. Obviously it`s a mistake. Our adversaries know that in a stand up fight we would most likely prevail so they are planning to be willing to break the "rules"using what ever it takes. The USA has to be ready to get into a "street fight" and unfortunately, go down to their level. The British had red coats and marched in a straight line and see where it got them.

The list of crimes actively being carried out against my exposed state of being avoided by even attorneys who risk their lives if they were to tell security guards who have predominantly made it nearly impossible for me to make any appointments after games are played with ominous calls to the attorneys with the clear intention of emphasizing that I don't have an appointment after informing them that that was what I had been there to schedule all but one time when finally an 80+ year old international attorney denied the immediate transfer to another country or an embassy within another country as if my life and the life of countless others depended upon it. 🆘

I am not able to receive any emergency services, medical healthcare services, life saving procedures or be able to discuss the war crimes that are being inflicted onto my vulnerable state of being inapparently publicly mutilated. Neither local, state or even federal law enforcement officers and agents are legally able to control to deny me, one human being by the name of Ronald Aaron Lopez, the immediate assistance required according to international law.🆘

What she said made no sense. We quickly up came with this amendment that we wanted. China and Russia says it doesn't go far enough on banning weapons in space. She notes what Russia and China brought up has been in discussions for years but it was not agreed upon so it wasn't right to implement. She said the US came up with their change recently so it has not been talked about basically at all and so of course they would say no. She should perhaps slow down and hold meetings before implementing an amendment so quickly. I'm with Russia and China, that all weapons in space should 100% be banned. Should be a place for science not war.

Funny that Russia put the device in space but are against weapons in space. I thought they were the first nation to put a cannon in space in the 70s and then tried to put the fractional orbital system in space in the 80s... say one thing and does another... like invading ukraine.

I'm sorry to relate to you fine people, but the Outer Space Treaty was never worth the paper it was printed on. Militarisation of space was always going to be inevitable. The Russians just took the first step, made the first move. Space has been militarised.
