  • Russia wants to put a nuclear weapon into space, new intelligence suggests. Although details are slim, policy experts said that the technology could be used against satellites, raising questions about Russia’s intentions and the potential ramifications of an orbital detonation.
WSJ looks at the history of nuclear detonation in space with Starfish Prime and explores what we know about Moscow’s development.

Russia has had FOBS systems in play since the SS-18 went online. This is designed as an anti-sat/EMP weapon. What most don't realize is that any Teller-Ulam thermonuclear detonated as a high atmospheric airburst will have this effect. This is not new, nor is it terrifying. Literally been around since at least the early '80's.

They've had an anti-satellite capability for years. You've never heard of the satellite that releases another and then that releases another that could be used as a kinetic impactor at short notice (cosmos 2519, 2521, cosmos 2542, 2543 + rocket powered projectile)? Apparently this 'newer' threat is nuclear powered, not a nuclear (explosive) weapon. Enough power to jam satellites over a large area, to prevent surveillance, not to physically destroy them.

Im not here to defend Russia but having no cultural analysis in any of these news stories is mind numbing. Russia has been historically anti-nuclear in terms of space and seen it as a joint venture. At the height of the cold war there were countless joint space missions for gods sake. Many russians still see space as the ultimate frontier and the pride of their nation for their early achievements in space flight. A nuclear attack would be indiscriminate and damage russian assets equally. Damaging the last of their presence in orbit would be unthinkable for Russia, unless in an all out war of course.. .

The US, Russia, and China have all demonstrated they can shoot down satellites many years ago and how it would cause a domino effect taking out everyone's satellites. The US... well, come to think of it, that's pretty much what the Democrats are doing.

EMB`s have been around and have been in countries arsenals for yrs. They would accomplish the needed chaos and damage way more easily. Early warning and interception systems have been in place as well. If it were as easy and productive to launch such a strike it would already have been used. The high ground has always been the most advantage. We and the Soviets have known and utilized this for decades. Think the star war programs of the 80`s Reagan toyed with just went away. Serving in the Minute Man program will teach one a thing or two.
