Alexander Volkanovski vs Islam Makhachev UFC 284.
UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and featherweight champion Volkanovski fought back-and-forth for five hard rounds. Makhachev retained his title, but the outcome is sure to be debated for some time.
Makhachev and Volkanovski masterfully weaponized each other's greatest strengths. Volkanovski managed to peel away Makhachev's grappling and confidence to wrestle offensively. But Makhachev mastered the range on the feet and countered Volkanovski well. All five rounds were competitive, but the momentum trended from Makhachev to Volkanovski with each passing five minutes.

Watching this at Buffalo Wild Wings was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen in my life. Getting up from takedowns, scrambling, and finishing very strong on top of Islam was insane. Alexander is truly “The Great”

He made Issy do the work, while he maintained control over Issi's hands, all the while while taking a lil breather and the opportunity of a Kumora.
Issy even admitted he greatly underestimated Volks ground skills.
Kudos to both of them. I called a draw, as round 1 was not as one sided as the fangirls claimed and they both had 2 rounds each. I thut R5 was a 10-8 to Volk, He Hamburgered Issi's face and he finished almost unmarked. 👍

Everybody was expecting Islam to beat Volk up and made him tap and when Islam failed to do so they thought Volk won. Unbelievable. Give both fighters some respect they BOTH won. Volk proved that he can stand toe to toe with Islam till the 5th round and beat him in that round too and Islam proved to be a very technical fighter both on the feet and on the ground. Cheers to both fighters. Islam clearly won at least 3 rounds and Volk won the final round convincingly and the 3rd round. They both are legit champions but Islam won 3 rounds to 2. Volk even said he could and should have done better.

how are takedowns nothing? youre just giving excuses to low skilled fighters who cant properly defend against or counter the takedown attempt in the first place lol just putting your bodyweight on top of someone you took down will make them struggle to breath and burn out their muscles if theyre trying to push you off or stand up, plus theyre panicking trying to avoid being submitted

Islam won on the feet by outstriking and also won by scoring takedown although wasn't able to do much damages with his submission attempts. Nevertheless, a takedown score is still a take score similar to a punch that didn't produce a knock out, but a landed punch is still a punch scored. Other than the last 1:30 second of the last round, we can't find any evidence that Volk dominate or score more offensive points than Islam. So, if either champ can't finish the match with submission or knock out and rely on decision by scorecard, logically, the winner is Islam. Fair and square.
Damage scores more than takedowns with control without damage. Also Volk landed more significant shots.
A takedown without significant damage or threats of submission are meaningless in the scoring criteria, damage will always trump any type of control or accumulative strikes.

Easy win for Islam. He Beat volk in striking (his own game). Volk got only last minute of ground game. Islam got bruise volk got deep cut in the eye by Islam's elbow. Islam's Ground Control was superior.

Also Islam did outstrike Alex but he didn't look comfortable on the feet, maybe he respected him too much or it was the weight cut, but he didn't try a single front kick, knees were good though.

However the boos for Islam whenever he goes for his bread and butter grappling are just wrong.

As a fighter myself and going into this betting on Islam, I did not see Islam winning, I saw Volk winning UD and was absolutely (pleasantly) shocked Islam came up. But was disappointed BC it felt like dirty judges in boxing robbing fights. I thought UFC was better than this. Volk literally was striking more while Islam has his back. Islam just sat there after multiple failed attempts to submit Volk. The smaller man brilliantly defended every attempt and out-strike Islam. I suspect there some dirty magic in the background but I aint complaining since I got my money HAHA. Sucks for Volk though, it is phenomenally hard to go up weight and dominate a naturally bigger opponent. He worked his ass off.
very good and honest comment because i felt the exact same as an absolute neutral. couldnt give a toss who wins but i feel terrible for how volk got treated by the judges for this fight.
what fight did you watch my man? watch the fight again without audio. islam got the better of the striking exchanges in round 1 2 and arguably even 3. dropped him and wobbled him on different occasions. controlled his back in round 4. volk won round 5. that's about it. people are surprised that volk was able to neutralize some of islams grappling, but didn't do much in those first 4 rounds other than that
