  • In today's video, I talk about the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly. She's a very colorful and interesting pollinator. I love her vibrant coloring and patterns, her caterpillar stage is amazing, and even her chrysalis is beautiful. I got the pleasure of seeing all her life stages last year, even a couple of them mating! Watch this video to learn more about butterflies in general and specifically about this species of butterfly. I live in East Tennessee, but these butterflies have a fairly large range. So, sit back and relax and watch this video if you love butterflies!
I also have a video that shares lots of info about that host plant, purple passionvine. Find it here: • Purple Passion Vine Na...

I found one on my door step this morning! Thought he was dead!! I tapped him with a little leaf and he moved a little, so I have been researching what to feed him, I gave him some butterfly weed and watermelon. He stumbled right on over to the butterfly weed and has been seeming to get the nectar out of it for a couple mins now. Great video I hope my butterfly recharges and flies away! Y’all there is always hope!!!

Ooooo I got notified of new content from A Wild Approach. Yay! Thank you Macey.
OK, I know this is ridiculous but I have to confess I teared up while watching your video. I forgot how much I enjoyed the Gulf Fritillaries (all stages) during the ten years I had my big vine. Watching them here reminded me of all those days coming home from work and they were the first thing that I greeted and that greeted me.
The chrysalis time lapse was wonderful! Have you seen their eggs? Have you looked at the eggs with magnifying glass or hand lens? (I'm such a geek that I carry a hand lens in my purse).Tiny golden things with an interesting structure.
Yep, no doubt now, 100% for sure, I'm not kidding, I'm going to get another vine going this spring. AND then protect it from those "rare" hard winter freezes in Texas.
P.S. If "Chippy" is still around my next paycheck, he's coming home to me. Keep adding your garden art cards to your AWA videos, I think that was a most splendid idea!

Aww thank you! That's so sweet. There's just something about these special butterflies. I don't know what it is, but they are truly mood lifting. No, I don't have a hand lens, but I definitely should get one, as I find it hard to find the eggs. Also, maybe you remember this already, but I recall the first year of the vine it was small, and took it a while to really take off. I think year two it finally started getting big enough for the caterpillars.
Awww! I'm glad you like Chippy! :)

Hi Macey! I am thinking about buying seeds from a new (to me) company. What is the chemical (an insecticide, I believe) that I want to make sure they don't use? You mentioned it to me before, but I can't find that convo and have forgotten the name. :(

Oh no problem! It's neonicotinoids. I think I sent an article. Maybe this one? : www.nrdc.org/stories/neonicotinoids-101-effects-humans-and-bees

@@awildapproach That indeed was the link you sent. Thank you :) BTW, I got this response today from Southern Seed Exchange and it made me so happy. I bet you will find it equally joyful::
      Hello!
Thank you for getting in touch, and I completely understand your concerns. In short, no, we don't use chemicals on our seeds. I'd like to provide some background on our company to clarify. While our seeds may not be certified organic, it's essential to know that we take the issue of chemical use seriously. We are a family-run business, and our top priority is the well-being of our family, including our oldest daughter who is currently pregnant.
We all work and live closely with these seeds every day, and the last thing we want is to be in an environment where we, our children, and future generations are exposed to chemicals on a daily basis. That's not something we're willing to compromise on.
Many of our seeds are grown on my mother's seed farm. At this stage in her life, she prefers working with her plants without getting bogged down in government regulations.
I hope this information helps clarify our approach. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or if there's anything else we can assist you with. We're here to support you and stand by our commitment to quality seeds!
      Warm regards,
