  • surprisingly we did not get any rain today which made it a relaxing day figuring out the transmission shaft on the Adams Road Grader known as Gomez. since it was friday of the canadian long weekend in canada we had a relaxing day getting lots done on the rearends. by the end of the day the unit was closed up with oil. the staff came and helped with the quad-atv and log trailer. plus Sir Rodney finally got the clutch brake band that we mailed south on monday. thansk

    Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ I am impressed, you really are doing some fine work Joey 👍 once you have this Grader up and running what are you going to do with it? I'm looking forward to Gomez operating once again. Good to see you're on the job Sir Rodney, I'm sure you'll do a fine job realigning that shoe. Cheers 🥂 to your long weekend for Canada Day. ✌️🇺🇲🇨🇦

    Joey, I'm thinking that those high torque specs are for compressing the so-called crush sleeve over the shaft inside. It will require a dial indicator to check end play on those bearings as you tighten them. If you put all that torque on the nut, before the bearings contact the inner sleeve, it will over load the bearings and destroy them in short order. There's a reason prior mechanics tried to add spacers behind the old bearing. Check in that trans service manual closer, it should spell this out in better detail.

    • @kingofobsolete4789
      @kingofobsolete4789  Месяц назад

      yes, i read and re-read the service manual but that was when the machine was new and not worn out. these are over designed and assembling it back to be close enough as it is a retirement grader. the fun part about this project is the learning and comments because other people will be reading these comments and learning in the future. thansk

    • @kingofobsolete4789

      canada post has contracted semi trucks to haul the mail across canada. the semi truck of mail leaves winnipeg around 9pm sunday to thursday to head north to thompson. it arrives in thompson at 6am if the roads are good. then sorted quickly for smaller single wheel van trucks to haul to the smaller communities. the fellow who runs the small single wheel van trucks also owns a towing outfit too. the reason for the single wheels is so the broken mail van can fit easily on tot he tilt deck tow truck. since the roads are so rough, owning a towing outfit to tow broken mail vans only makes sense. thansk

    Hey, on that pinion torque, Remember the crush sleeve is only for preloading the bearings on the pinion shaft, NOT PLACING THE PINION DEPTH into the ring gear. The shims between the bearing race and the pinion head place that depth. It doesn't matter how much torque you put on the nut, it will not change the depth of the gear mesh, that is fixed once you place the shims between the head and bearing until you begin to destroy the bearing. If you didn't pull the bearing off the pinion, you have not altered the shim pack, nor the depth of mesh, and it should be the same as it was. I have reused crush sleeves several times on cars with high horsepower and 500 Lb/ Ft torque and never had a problem. but not on an old diesel grader. Just be diligent as usual and tighten it up just to the amount they ask for in the manual. 700#/ Ft sounds like a lot, but who knows how hard the sleeve is, it may take that much to crush it. ben/ michigan

    • @kingofobsolete4789
      @kingofobsolete4789  Месяц назад

      not worried about crush depth, more worried about worn down spacer from the nut and hub not being tight for a long long time. these are over engineered so tightening the big nut back up and keeping an eye on the pinion gear is about all i can do thansk

    At about 11.00you can see there is like a dam affixed at the bottom of the inside of the case. The pipe is resting on it. Maybe this directs gear oil back where it needs to be. Also, are you sure on that nose cone about having two grease fittings? Maybe one is supposed to be a grease fitting, and the other is supposed to be a pressure relief fitting. You know, one of those deals that looks like a grease fitting without the nipple, but instead a little flat piece with a tiny spring and ball behind it. More learning to come here. I should get final confirmation in a day or two, and then a fresh Alaska flag should head your way. Take care. P.S. Remember that grease guns exert thousands of pounds of force and if your setup is faulty, things may be pushed where they don’t belong.

      also remember, the grader is about 80 year old and lots of people have tried to improve the design with what they have and what they think i they under stand. once i get the proper parts book, then i can see what is to be there. the main think is there are now 2 ways of lubing that shielded bearing which could be the wrong one. thansk

    Why don't you try a freeze plug in the end of the shaft? Not sure of the size is common to a freeze plug but sounds like a good solution.
