I usually do not agree with Zakir Naik. But in his definition of Hindusim, he is on point. The word 'Hindu' was used for the then Indians. So origin-wise, 'Hindu' is a nationality, NOT A RELIGION.
But by that definition, every Indian is a Hindu. Anybody living in India is a Hindu.
Hinduism wasn't meant to be a religion regardless. It was meant to be a culture, a civilisation, a way of life. Like the Greek civilisation or Roman civilisation. They have their own 'gods' and rituals and books and literature, but aren't religions themselves.
However, they died out a lot, meanwhile the Hindu civilisation flourished. In the medieval world, with different religions settling in India, slowly being a Hindu changed from people living in India to people who follow a religion of Hinduism...which still didn't make sense because there's no religion 'Hinduism'. The word isn't used in ANY Hindu literature or scriptures.
But somehow we ended up where we are and now, Hinduism is a religion...

Only allegorical stories with different names of deities which revolve around the same metaphysical core differ.. The core metaphysics is nothing but creator (soul + intelligent energy) = Created (soul + intelligent energy). Soul and intelligent energy (which makes up everything material) cannot exist without each other. Hindu/vedic metaphysics can be validated by logic, experiment (double slit quantum experiment) and first person empiricism or embodied experience also called as meditation or yoga.

I'd like to tell you that 3 years ago I used to Hate Hindu peoples and their religion just because they worship idols , I used to follow Zakir Naik I was totally influenced by him, according to Islam no one worthy of worship if you do then you are kafir that thing nagged me too much! religion should spread love not hate then I started developing interest in Hinduism ( Sanatan Dharm ) now i understand reason of idol worshiping, human mind is very much impulsive and doesn't get concentrated at one point in the Vedic era sages invented this methodology of idol worship
